So after not playing any games for the past 2 weeks, I decided to give Team Fortress 2 a go today. When turned on Steam, it had to download some update, and afterwards, when I tried to run TF2, the game doesn't even start, and Windows shows an error message saying that there's a problem with the program. Anyone else have this problem? What should I do?

Did you update, or change your gfx drivers at all?

I didn't do anything with my graphics driver for a long time. TF2 used to run fine on my computer three or four weeks ago.
-
did it say "hl2.exe has encountered a problem" ?

It says...
"HL2 has stopped working."
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." -
You should do a re-install.

Did that twice.

Ouch!

I had the same problem try this...
Go to your \Steam\SteamApps\<USERID>\team fortress 2\bin\ directory.
Copy the binkw32.dll file found there to \Steam\SteamApps\<USERID>\team fortress 2\ where hl2.exe is located
BTW: If this blows-up steam its not my fault...(it won't but just incase y-know?) -

I get the same error message...

Have you contacted customer support?

Go to steam and verify the game cache form tf2. It's what i do for CSS.
For me seems 2 work after that -
in the main folder of steam, you *can* try to delete the .blob file, it's fixed some problems for me before but I don't know...
goood luck -
I'm going spew some links at you, and hopefully something should work out and help you play Badlands

Also, you may want to go to support.steampowered.com and in the search box type "Vista"
Good luck with that (= -

I took a look at those two websites, no luck. I'll contact customer support as soon as I figure out the steampowered website maze.

I had a similar problem. I inserted my vista dvd and just selected the fix option. It worked for me when nothing else would.

I think he means that if you go to re-install, it offers you the option of repairing your installation like XP does. That's my guess anyways.

TF2 has problems with some AV programs..one of them is NOD32. I should know because I use NOD32. The official word from Valve is to not run those AVs. Well that's not an option for me.
I did get that windows message when I start up TF2. "The program has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Somehow if I just ignore it and wait, the game will eventually launch and I'll get the into the game menu...and that windows error message apparently goes away by itself. -
I had the same exact problem when i purchased Orange Box. I looked around the internet and this was one of the solutions I found. I am pretty sure that this was what fixed the problem for me, good luck. The information was copied from this source: http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=479952

For users with the Home editions of Vista:
Go to the command prompt (hit run and type in cmd.exe)
and type this in:
net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service
then you can type this in:
net localgroup Administrators
and if LOCAL NT AUTHORITY/SERVICE is listed, then it worked. Now go reboot. -

It runs fine tho, that's not the problem...but sometimes it pops up a windows error message and does a few weird auto minimizes which just goes away when the game starts..once the game runs its fine.
On valve forums NOD32 was flagged as a potential problem by Valve ..guess there were more serious problems that I weren't aware of. -

The second one worked for me! Nice now I can finally play.
Another question, anyone know where I can download the new TF2 map pack other than from filefront?
