Alex returns with a new Tech Focus and the question is this. Do you really need ultra settings to get the very best out of your PC games? What increase in visual quality do they give you? Or is it possible to dial them back with much the same - or better - results, and a boost to performance as well?

I top out on high just so I can get those extra frames.

And I keep an eye out for the digital foundries or hardware unboxed tuning videos.

I also prefer running with an overpowered GPU and keep settings on high while having the system run cooler and higher fps. After a while of playing I'm pretty sure no one would notice the difference.

Speaking of ultra settings, am I the only one who hates motion blur? It's the very first thing I always disable in any game.

I try to keep it as light as possible. I had a game with super high motion blur as a non adjustable setting and I had to refund it as I almost threw op on the laptop. Lol
