For some reason my GeForce 9800M is spiking when i'm seemingly doing nothing. Aka just playing a very low demanding game like wow. That game if i don't have vsync on i can easily get 200fps with everything maxed. So that tells me it's almost nothing as far as the demands it has.

Here last week it was running just dandy whilst running games that seem to be more demanding than wow aka bloodmayre, the witcher, etc. And it never goes above 55*C. now for some reason as soon as i turn on any game or try to do anything it immediately spikes to 80*C in a matter of seconds. Also it feels alot hotter and i don't get where that's coming from.

First off it's compeltely stock speeds same with my cpu. I also have RM Clock and have undervolted my cpu as much as it'll let me go. So that's helping keep it cooler but it's just feeling alot higher. I don't get where it's coming from.

Having it on my lapt right now it feels burning hot. I don't get why as it's only... 48*C for the gpu and 53*C for the cpu.

No idea why this is happening but i'll probably blame it on faulty hardware just wanted to know if there was/is anything i could do to help it last till i can get back home to get it taken in for repairs.

Sounds like its working fine, when you launch a game regardless of what game the GPU core will throttle up to 100% instead of idle, this in turn will generate more heat, 80c for that card sounds about right as the 8800m in mine hits 83c tops.

I had a similar problem. My idle temps would reach my load temps suddenly for a period of time. I fixed this by doing a BIOS update (don't know why this was the problem, but it worked).

the point of this is it used to not do it. the 9800m i had used to run alot cooler. I even played crysis on this thing when i was doing a benchmark did the high benchmark since i didn't want to see 2fps :p and then even then. Also when i did 4 3dmark 06 tests right after eachother. It only went up to 79. And that was after 4 tests in a row with no break. Now it's just running hotter for no reason what so ever. Right now it's doing nothing. I don't have aero on(windows 7) all i'm doing is sitting here typing in this thread and it's already 60. Air vents all around it and it's hitting 60. The main thing i have problems with it is that i can't feel that strong air coming out of the exhaust port. It's almost nothing coming out of it. Where as it used to keep it cool the entire time.

Edit: Also windows 7's doing the whole "3GB of ram usable" on an x64 enviroment. I have 4GB so oh well that's just wonderful....

How long have you had it?, quite possible the vents have become blocked with dust and need a good clean out. Also is the gpu fan still correctly throttling up, basically getting louder as its needed.

Not sure about the 4gb thing, as a 64bit OS should show it all.

It still may need a good cleaning. I'd do that before taking any other steps. Just my .02

80C is very normal for that GPU... you really don't need to worry until it breaks 90C. Also, even if you easily achieve 200fps in WoW, that doesn't mean it's not stressing your GPU to the max. Even Halo CE on my desktop can bring temps as high as they are when I play Crysis. If you're still worried, open up the bottom of your laptop and clean out the vents with a can of compressed air.
