Round 1 Fight!
- Post your personal opinions on why one game is better than the other, or what you like about one, or dislike about the other.
I may have a little talk show podcast thing soon with a fellow YouTuber/Gamer as we were talking briefly during my live stream of Guild Wars 2 on this same topic.
I was surprised to see somebody support Tera so strong and not like GW2 very much. So now I am interested in seeing more opinons from other people.
You May
> Flame the game but not each other
> Use technical reasons like performance, stability, monthly cost
> Use personal reasons, in my opinion...
Be constructive I would like to see a good debate.

Il start then.
For me the decision is based purely on the fact that Tera needs a monthly subscription while Guild Wars 2 does not.
If Tera followed the same buisness model i would perhaps go for it too but them Elins creep me out. D; -
Yes, we cannot allow the monthly subscription thing to keep going. Do expansions every year to cover costs of development, but don't charge every month. That is the main reason I'm leaning towards Guild Wars 2 too.
-
I personally think that GW2 > Tera in almost every instance. I played a ranged class for both during each beta (Ranger and Archer respectively) and while Tera's aiming mechanic required a little bit more skill it distracted away from skill rotation and the lack of movement while attacking actually deteriorates the skill required to play. In GW2 you can attack and cast skills while moving making the pace much quicker and skillful.
The dodge system is also much better in GW2 as you can choose the direction and how you want to dodge rather than it being connected to a skill like Tera.
I also like the way the story played out in GW2 and found the experience to feel more unique. I enjoyed who the cutscenes were done in GW1 as it made things feel more epic and GW2 sort of follows suit. While playing Tera I pretty much felt like I was playing Aion with an improved combat system.
I'm not saying Tera is bad, but it's just not as good as GW2. After playing just the beta weekends for both I'd say Tera is around an 8 while GW2 is closer to a 9. Tera is still honestly the 2nd or 3rd best MMORPG out there period, IMO, but there really has been a lack of quality titles in the genre even though the market feels flooded (albeit with sub-par games). -
Combat feels more fluid in GW2 but have to plan your moves more carefully in Tera so neither one is better to me, it would depend on how I feel like playing at the time. This is mostly due to Tera being less forgiving to mistakes.
Definitely like the character customization more in GW2 since any class can have a variety of play styles while each character in Tera plays nearly the same every time you log on them.
Questing to GW2, PvP probalby GW2 but Tera doesn't have BG's yet to fully judge but an even playing field in structed PvP as well as grandness of WvW is going to be hard to beat.
Main point Tera wins on is the political system setup and setting up the more seeming community that the political system will yield. Active elections, loving/hating guilds based on how they run their provinces will probalby yield a more active server community than GW2's WvW will. It will be easier to not know who nameless guild X is in WvW since nothing they do directly effects me like a guild raising/lowering taxes or closing/opening shops in Tera.
Overall, going to play Tera until GW2 comes out but will probably cancel sub then unless game ends up being good enough I want to continue paying for a sub and wish to/have time for playing both games. -
I cant say anything about GW2 as I haven't played it. But I am curious and want to try it.
I am starting with Tera and maybe one of the reason why I like it is just because its not WoW. I dont hate WoW but I just got tired of playing it for 6 yrs.
Feels like Tera is a whole new game for me. I like the combat style so much. Maybe if I get the chance to play GW2 then I would feel the same being new to me.
One thing I am not used is how the screen is locked in Tera.

gw2 is probably going to be a lot better than tera as a game, totally ignoring the fact that with tera you have to pay 10-15$/month depending on how far ahead you pay.
even if gw2 releases a $40-50 expansion every 16 months, it's going to be a MUCH cheaper endeavor, and you won't be required to pay anything extra to continue playing at any point.
I would also have less of a problem with pay per month games if they didn't have an initial purchase requirement. There's no way I'm paying $50-60 for a game download, and then $15/month on top of that to have access to the game. Flat refuse on principal, even for a high profile game, much less something like tera. -
I haven't tried TERA so i can't really comment on the gameplay aspect, but the no monthly fee is certainly attractive for GW2 and the way they intend microtransactions to be implemented in GW2 it won't be buy to win either like some free to play MMOs. If GW2 succeeds with that model, the arguments for pay to play will certainly take a hit. I don't really see myself paying per month for a game.
One thing i do like about both games is that they do try to make things differently than other MMOs in certain respects. There are some things that you can't really change that much though. -
Haven't played (or really even looked into) either of them and frankly I'm not sure if I want to get back into an MMO again, but if I have the time it will def be GW2. No sub fees are really appealing not because of the money but because without them you don't feel like you are committed to the game for reasons other than the gameplay - with fees you feel bad not playing because then what are you paying for? I can still install and play GW1 anytime I want even though I haven't so much as thought about it in 4 years or so and it will be exactly where I left it.
Another reason to buy GW2 for me is to support their business model, it seems like the quality game studios/companies are moving towards f2p/microtransaction variants and we should vote with our wallets. Valve has made more money with tf2 after it went f2p than all their other games, it just works. -

Tera is more of an experiment then a real game. It was like. Like really, give me at least one reason why it wont be forgotten like any other wanna be wow-killer? Its not even the most beaitiful or the most fun wow-killer there was. so ye.
GW2 on the other hand got HUGE fan base and is bound to be successful. -
I think Guild Wars 2 will be successful in the sense that it will find its own little niche in the MMO market, kinda like what Guild Wars 1 offered at the time. Usually people assume no-sub MMOs= no content/bugs/boring/etc etc. but that was DEFINITELY not the case with Guild Wars. Sure there were some areas of the game that were lacking (instanced world, only social interactions were in towns or in parties) but with the most important parts (in my opinion), story, graphics (or art style in the case of Guild Wars), gameplay, PvP!...those things all flourished. And the option to take a year or two break from the game, go to the website, re-download the client, log in, and keep on playing without ever having to reach for that credit card is a wonderful feeling.
Honestly, I can see myself playing Guild Wars 2 along with a subscription-based MMO (maybe The Old Republic, waiting for a free demo). -
I'm gunna give the answer every gamer on the internet gives:
I bought GW2 already and not Tera so by that alone I now pronounce GW2 superior and Tera super LAME!!!
Really, for me it comes down to no subscription and the fact that the original GW was a unique success which didn't attempt to "beat WoW". I'm pretty much done with subscriptions for a while, and I'm not excited by the F2P model. Arenanet has figured out how to make a MMO work without subscriptions and massive item shops and I would like to support that. -
Played both
GW2 is the better game (I had access to both BETAs)
I guess it also depends on your taste
I always wanted a game that focus at exploration/story/questing instead of pure usual grinding/equipment/boss battles (GW2 got that and more like super fun pvp world vs world and huge bosses fights etc) but you can clearly tell they did put a lot of time in the world instead of the generic tera. -
I liked Guild Wars 2 a lot more. The main story quests, based upon your choices at character creation was awesome. In Tera, the quests are so generic, bland, and uninspiring that I was bored to death. I actually think Tera's questing experience is the worst I've come across in an MMO, and that's really saying something. And the storyline and backdrop of Tera? Extremely shallow and seemed like an afterthought. Very disappointing.
Combat in GW2 is smooth and fluid, and chaining together skills feels "right". In Tera, the big talking point to the game is their combat. The combat in Tera is cool and fluid, much like GW2, but one thing that bugged the hell out of me with Tera is the reticule being anchored to the mouse and all mouse movement. In essence, you can't move the reticule independently from the mouse, or vise versa. I adjusted to it, but really hated that aspect.
The PvP side, this easily goes to GW2. Why? It's a game designed around WvW and multiplayer aspects. In Tera beta, I'd routinely see people getting one shot by level 32 players in killer gear. Tera is just another game that's a gear grind, with the strong preying upon the weak. In GW2, you at least have a fighting chance based upon skill, and not gear. All in all, I saw absolutely nothing revolutionary about Tera, nor did I find the game particularly interesting - especially with a subscription attached. The only two redeeming qualities I found with Tera are the BAM's and the graphics, that's about it.
I leveled a Priest to lvl 32 and Sorcerer to lvl 24 in the Tera beta. In the GW2 beta, I leveled a Thief to 20 and an Elementalist to 20. I had a much more enjoyable time with the GW2 beta, and personally just found it to be a more robust game all around. To me, Tera felt like a one tricky pony, except it was missing that one trick. I cancelled my Tera order after playing in the beta, and won't be looking back. GW2 is just more my type of game. -
I think most of us can handle 10-12usd sub fee, so stop saying "GW2 is no sub so its better then Tera". Its better because its a better game, more fun etc. If only Tera or any other game offered a breakthrough bells and whistles like vanilla wow did back in the days i would gladly triple sub fee just to get involved in all that fun stuff.
-
And just to add a side note
When i stopped playing Tera beta the game was already forgotten in my mind and was not missed
After GW2 beta was closed i felt huge withdrawal and wanna go back to GW2 as soon as possible, i miss my warrior and Elementalist still -
I have been enjoying Tera, it really feels like a prettier Kingdoms of Amalur, which is a pretty big feat. They made an online game with gameplay that is very similar to some of the best action RPGs around. It isn't perfect, but I find myself wanting to play some more, it has extremely good pacing, fun areas, good graphics, but most of all really fun gameplay. It does not feel at all like MMO combat. Plus, it has all the modern MMO features you expect. Lots of quests, a cross server LFG tool (im looking at you SWTOR), all while eliminating the time wastey elements (for example, you mount and dismount instantly and you can teleport anywhere you have been before, etc).
TLDR: Tera is an action RPG but with a bunch of other people, no added time wastey elements like we saw in SWTOR, and all the modern MMO elements you want.
GW2 looks good, but it is months away, I will play Tera now and GW2 later. -
Mark today on the calendar.
I think this is the first time I agree with Lieto. (well at least in the main point)
If an MMO had the community, gameplay, and features that made it a "must play" for me, I would gladly pay the monthly fee. Especially for well-maintained and anti-cheat patrolled servers with active and participating GMs. Back in the early days of EQ1, the GMs used to orchestrate GM events and raids. If this became the NORM, it would be worth every penny as the game would be very different at least during those times. -
I may not have tried Tera, but given how i liked the GW2 beta already, Tera would need something truly amazing for me to go for it. Add to that that i already have people who will be playing GW2 with me, from NBR and my old GW buddies as well so for GW2 i got the community side of things pretty well covered i'd say. -
My ideal kind of MMO would incorporate elements of grinding (runescape, wurm online), action (tera), exploration (gw2 / wow), environment interaction / reshaping (wurm online), epic randomized loot (diablo ii / to some degree wow), skill-based combat (tera / gw2), and of course a good solid lore-heavy story.
One can dream, right? -
Just started playing this, so far it is beautiful
-
-
Got the chance to play both betas but didn't really level any character up too high in either so this is all based on preliminary (but I think the formula will hold true all the way up to end game levels) evidence.
Price
----
First, I would say I enjoyed playing both games but I have GW2 pre-purchased simply because it is a one off $60 price (micro-transactions notwithstanding). I would probably buy TERA for $60 even if only to play through it once.
Victor: GW2
Gameplay - PvE
----
I really enjoyed TERA's combat system. It was fun, quick and very interactive. It's not possible to simply stand still and hit one key. However, maybe because of the emphasis on the combat system, I found the quests to be repetitive by the time I had left the first starting area (~level 10). They were all kill x number of mobs or obtain x number of items from killing even more mobs. Also, they weren't very believable in the sense that I wanted to do them for the NPC. They were just there to give me xp.
GW2 also has a really fun combat system. The various weapon skills make swapping weapons interesting and worthwhile (other MMOs generally go with what weapon has the best stats = equipped weapon. In TERA, there is no such thing as weapon switching as the class dictates the type of weapon used). The quests (though arguably also kill x number of things or gather x number of things) at least in the lower levels are more interesting and varied. Even though it might be essentially the same thing, it genuinely feels like I'm "helping" the NPC whether it be feeding cows or picking up mortar shells.
Victor: Draw - The combat in TERA really was quite fun and this is the only reason I call it a draw. Everything else goes to GW2 I think.
Gameplay - PvP
----
I didn't PvP at all in TERA so I can't really comment but from videos that I have seen of it, it looks like one gigantic gankfest outside of some neutral cities with no real purpose. GW2 has the arena type small skirmishes plus WvWvW.
Victor: GW2 - Hands down IMO.
Graphics/environment
----
Both TERA and GW2 look beautiful. Slightly different approaches but amazing results in both games. Another plus for both is that even on my crappy rig, both ran decently well (good enough that I could play it). TERA has the rather typical Asian MMO influence where all the female toons are... how would you say it, proportionally exaggerated in all the right places? This coupled with the lack of any semblance to functional armor could be a major plus for some but a drawback for others. GW2 has pretty toons as well, though I would say more conservative than TERAs.
Victor: Draw - In my books, the graphics/environment work for both games and what they're going for I think.
Misc (still important, I just don't know that much about it)
----
There is still so much more in either game that I didn't get the chance to try out like crafting, guilds etc... so I can't really comment on that.
Victor: Inconclusive
Longevity
----
Again, based on two betas that lasted one weekend each, it would be presumptuous of me to truly say which one is better in this regard but I have an opinion.
Victor: GW2 - This is just based on my gut feeling but I don't think I will be wrong...
Conclusion (TL;DR)
----
Price - GW2
Gameplay PvE - Draw
Gameplay PvP - GW2
Graphic/environment - Draw
Misc - Inconclusive
Longevity - GW2
Man, this got pretty long, plus it looks like I wrote it in essay format haha. In the end, I'd say that both games excel in what they're trying to achieve. TERA for its combat system, GW2 for its combat system plus PvP and PvE. But I definitely think there is a lot more to GW2 than there is to TERA. Take away TERA's combat system and there's not a whole lot left (IMO) but with GW2, there are plenty of other innovative ideas. So based on my humble opinion and two very short but enjoyable beta weekends...
Overall victor: GW2 -

Lets say i payed 50 usd for skyrim. I played it for... well around 40 hours i think. Now i was paying 15usd sub fee for warhammer online during 2 months (ye, failed game). But i still got out with around 200 hours of game time for my 30 bucks. So i tend to think that sub games are always worth it if you actually play it. Offline games just fail to entertain me for longer then few days somehow.
$360 a year is $3600 in 10 years or $36000 in 100 years, ye xD
Its still 50c / day for 1 person. -
In the long run other MMOs will be more successful or whatever, but by then I likely will be done with Tera. I am having a great time now, and I reccomend it to anyone that wants a fun MMO to play now. -
I respect all your views though. I just dont see subs as a factor. If you choose GW2, its because you thought its really better.
I think the reason for the repetitive quests are to avoid just doing plain grinding without rewards. When I was playing WoW, I always come to a point that I run out of quest in a zone and I have to level up first to unlock the next series of quest. In Tera, putting some repetitive quest will avoid running out of quest to do I guess.
I still have the last Assassins Creed and new Resident Evil and I have only played less than an hour for both. -
In fact starting wotlk wow had by far most fun quests (and leveling) i experienced to date and even in vanilla with its fair share of kill X mobs i was enjoying how story unfolded. -
), there isn't even a release date yet so you should have plenty of time to finish those other ones before.
-
I believe that GW2 is the better choice. It's free to play! Both games have different combat systems, I prefer TERA Online's combat system. So TERA wins in the combat aspect

My vote is with GW2. It just looks like a better game in general.
-
I played the GW2 beta and I recently bought Tera.
I love Tera but that's just me (I thoroughly enjoyed Aion too, until level 30). So far Tera is far from grindy (only level 21 in 2 days). Yes it is the generic kill x amount of mobs and collect x plants. GW2 has the exact same type of quests, while adding in Dynamic Events which is awesome.
Now GW2 has the weapon switching to get different skills which is a really cool feature. The one dungeon I've done in Tera so far has been pretty hectic but just like dynamic final events in GW2.
They are different games altogether. Different art styles, different combat systems, and different player base. I'll pay for 3 months of Tera and if I don't thoroughly enjoy it I'll stop playing. It never hurts to give anything a try (plus it will keep me busy until the next GW2 beta)
-
I think people are saying that combat is better in Tera just because its new and different. But judging which is better is subjective. Everyone will have different opinions and likes.
When playing my rogue in WOW in instances, most of the time, I just lock on my target, stand behind and spam my rotation while staring at my cooldown UI without even having the need to look at my target.
In Tera, while playing Slayer, I have to always aim at the target or I will be slashing/hitting noone.
This can be positive for some like me since its new and negative for someone who finds it hard to transition.
I heard negative comments for healers in Tera since he cant do tab targeting and lock. He also always need to aim when healing and when someone or a mob is blocking his LOS, then he can target.
Its really hard to judge which is better, if we all enjoy playing either of them then that's what's better for us I guess. -
And it was always like that..
-
-
Given the ease of levelling in WoW, the concept of not believing someone in their choice of levelling methods is a tad ludicrous.
Telling someone you have a max level in WoW is kinda like telling them you can tie your shoes by yourself. -
I am just saying that wow had TON of quests pretty much at any point and grinding was never required, unless you forget to discover half of the zones or a continent.
-
I just used WoW as an example and if I will try to make Lieto "believe" me, I would just derail this thread's original intent by going off-topic.
