    Who plays it?
Who has no idea what it is?

This game caught my eye back in the beginning of June when it kept appearing high up in the Steam Top Seller list for several weeks in a row (it's still there). I looked at a few videos and some reviews, and decided to watch for it on the Summer Sale. I got lucky and bought the 4-pack for $7.50 before they "corrected" their mistake.

Terraria is the only game in the past 10 years that has brought back that "excitement" that I had for games in my youth. I have put in 60 hours in the past 2 weeks, and I still want more out of this game (only problem is the game is semi-beta and isn't complete; but the devs are patching regularly with more content).

I cannot recommend this game enough. I told my friend about my intentions to buy this game, and his response was "it looks stupid and I hate retro games". After giving him his copy the other week and forcing him to play, he purchased it for his wife last week, and he has been playing it non-stop for 40+ hours.

If you're an older gamer and desperately seeking to find that "magic" that was video games from your younger days, your search is over and the game is here: Terraria.

I cannot agree more with you. I bought it on the summer sale too for 2.5$. Still playing Singleplayer and not too many hours YET (King's Bounty is guilty of that, so addictive!), but is one of the best game I've played. LOVE the retro looks! Too bad there's no Mac version, so I could give my wife a copy too.

I also bought this game during the Steam sale and I've been having a little trouble getting into it.

What do you suggest for a newb to do first?

The issue with terraria is that it is an open game with no particular set of goals or anything to achieve, except what you want to achieve. So basically you create large worlds and nothing else.

What can I suggest? Get goals. My first goal was to get a set of armor, so I just started looking for ores around, learning about crafting and getting my armor.

Then set high end goals. For example, i wanted to fight and beat the current bosses. To do that, I had to get weapons and armor plus provisions. After a while, minimg more, exploring more, and beating my first boss, more things uncovered.

Now I have beat up all the bosses, and just focused on gettin the awesome loot and equipments.

Tbh the bosses at the mo seem a little od, skeltron is supposed to be the hardest boss but me and my m8 put it down faster then the eater of worlds. Yet you need to kill the eater of the worlds to make any decent armour after gold and a nightmare pickaxe.

Played the leaked version then brought it on release, now have just under 50 hours clocked but it's "been on the shelf" for a few weeks now. Great game, just not much to do once you get all the loot and if I want to build I just play Minecraft. Waiting on the next big update (as with MC). :D

Definatly a game worth buying if only to support smaller devs.

It took me 50 hours to"complete" the game. The past several games I have purchased for much more than the <$2 I spent on this game and only lasted me several hours.

I agree, it is sad when you've "finished" everything and still want more. But after 50 hours on my single player I am now jumping into multiplayer with my wife & friends and am super excited about all of it.

With a few more content patches this game will be unbelievable.

I usually play alone, but that a multiplayer game or it meant to be play with other and doesn't look too interesting to me. It definitely is a good game from majority of people I heard.

Yeah its going to be like Minecraft all over again. I'll hesitate to get it. Then get it and be like wow cool! then a month later be bored lol.

Minecraft for sure is the big competitor, we should get more feedback for people that own both on witch they prefer and why.

Minecrafts next big patch 1.8 has a LOT of stuff they are adding to make it a more full featured game.

Indeed. Best to buy a game when it is FULLY out of beta, so that you don't have to experience the update-excite-finishedin2days-bored-waitingfornewupdate cycle multiple times.

Well for me, I prefer Minecraft if I want to build some awesome structure. Terraria is fun for exploring randomly generated worlds, fighting monsters and collecting loot. People have made awesome buildings in Terraria but my creations are more for function than style. Although, this may change with Minecraft 1.8.

Yea when I first saw the game I thought it looked ok. I only bought it because of steam sale and one of my other friend had it. And I became completely hook on the game! Within 2 days of playing I have had 25 hours clocked in! Just love exploring and somehow I am always trying to move massive body of water to the lower level where lava are.

It is definitely a fun game to play with friends rather than by yourself.

Well i would say that i have gotten more out of minecraft... Though terreria is a great game i found myself to have completed everything in it rather quickly... Right now im not playing either of them because i have been playing minecraft since 2009 when it was in its very early stages. So i cant wait for the new patch :D Minecraft gets my vote, though these games arent really that comparable! I think you should definitely check both games out!

    Minecraft > Terraria

This is based on the amount of time i spendt on the games.
But Terraria runs better thanks to not using Java.

I think minecraft has more to offer in terms of building due to 3d space. So if you like building go minecraft.

But without playing it my first impression of terraria is it has more of an rpg feel to it with so many items to find that give you new abilities and bosses to fight and stuff like that.

The performance issue with minecraft is a big deal, its hard to run a server for it and some computers dont play it so well.

If we can manage to self host a terraria server for fun that would be great so no need to spend money like we do for minecraft and it should be a lot less maintenance!

I'll try to host it soon as I get the game, but I am not buying it till its on sale :D

I just <3 Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy 1 so when i found that awesome picture i has to use it as my avatar.

On my current VPS server at Fragnet hosting both Minecraft and Terraria would be near impossible as i do not have any access to the server other than a control panel and FTP.

If i had full access to the server this would be as easy as eating cake.
Im currently toying with the idea to set up a small & inexpensive dedicated server @ home, so i got full access.

Am not touching mine craft with a 20 foot pole or any game that is like that for that matter.

I'll stick with racing, fps, mmorpg, rts, stimulation, and adventure, just not puzzle and "creativity" which I lack.

the sim and sim city bore me tremendously.

ViciousXUSMC was like that too. ^^
He said the chances where slim that he would enjoy a game like Minecraft.

Once he tried it, all he could do was build awedome buildings on my server.
But like me, Minecraft got boring cause of lack of content.

Notch & Co!, Adventure update please. ;(

Still tons of fun. I am on another play through after the content patches (the one which added snow). Played on a few private servers with my friends but they rushed through and killed everything :(

This time I am playing solo on a small map.

Played it for 2 days now. The game is very fun. Go mining deep to get minerals, make weapons and armor. Cry some because you cannot find the minerals. Kill zombies and flying eyes. Was worth the 12 bucks for shure. I am playing medium sized map in single player. I wonder if that is too much or if it ok? A lot more to adventure. I found some eye that spawns the eye of chtulu. When should I fight it?

Also Deaglesons mutli player server is hack/grieved constantly so I have not found a good online home.

    Not my fault. D;
The devs refuse to add any kind of cheat protection or even game accounts.
Even less than legit clients have no problems connecting to others.

    Only solution would be to keep it private. D;

Yeah, not your fault just saying I that the game needs protection so you can put in time without fear of having it undone.

Grieving is a really big deal on Minecraft/Terraria and hard to manage without putting a lot of time/effort into it and lightly monitoring and restricting members.

tshock would solve a lot of our problems for sure,

but if it doesn't work, I'm sure most people wouldn't mind keeping it as a private server for frequent NBRers and friends.

I always prefered TDSM to TShock but il take what i can get.
Il see what i can get working, but like always dont store important items on the multiplayer map if its vanilla.

    Edit:

Im starting to move from vanilla to TShock 3.4 but i dont think il keep the old map.
I can upload it to my DropBox account for download but i doubt it would be worth it because the TShock enforces server side inventory now. :D

Its online at the same ip :port but its not configured yet, but i do recommend a new character to play there.

Has anyone found that the new "hardmode" gameplay after beating the wall of flesh is purely a truckload of win? I am glad they added that since "beating" the content over and over on different servers. The pre-patch content quickly got old. Now that I've been so busy I spend my time little by little crawling through the brutal beatdown that is hardmode. It's a blast. Really helps me and a few close friends get together on a local server and just sandbox.

As much as I cant claim to be a big fan of Terraria I have to say that playing for 11 minutes and considering yourself to have had any real view of the game is pretty narrow minded.

Its like reading the first page of a book, or watching the first 5 minutes of a movie. Until you put some time into it and see how it unfolds and evolves as you put more time into it you have not started to experience the game at all.

The best movies & books dont show all of their cards up front. Same goes for games.

World of Warcraft for example is dramatically different end game than it is for the first 40+ hours you put into it.

Trying this game out and I have to say in-game tutorial really sucks. Took me a very long time to learn how to figure how to place a workbench on the ground to craft other items. I guess I better find a tutorial for this game too. Anyone got any good tutorial sites?

not everyone enjoys digging. a lot of people just simply get bored, i couldnt even stand digging for stuff when its with my rl friends. i only played because they digged for stuff and gave me gear and we fought bosses.
