Test your internet connection quality

People often think mass bandwidth is the key to good online gaming experience. This is not true most games require very little bandwidth its the latency (ping) that really matters most.

As far as bandwidth upstream (upload) is usually the issue way before downstream (download) is as well due to those bandwidth numbers being lower.

Most if not all highspeed services these days have more than enough upstream and downstream bandwidth for you but your still possibly vunerable to packet loss or bad latency.

I just found a new site today that tests this for you so I though it was neat and wanted to share it.

This is the sister site of http://speedtest.net a really good bandwidth tester that also gives ping results but not in this manner or amount of detail.

The results of these test really have no bearing on your connection quality/speed/latency when gaming because your choosing a test site (probably close to you) and this site is not going to be in the same location as the server hosting your game. The further away things are the worse these kind of numbers tend to get. So try testing some places far away and see what kind of results you get.

 

I do recall seeing something like this in offtopic I think it's the who got the worst internet or something

Oh you have Verizon also? Yeah I love Verizon, we're paying for up to 7MB/S here, but Verizon is kind enough to give us 3.5 instead. We called and asked why we are paying for twice the bandwidth, yep apparently if we pay for a 3 mb line then we'll likely get a 768 speed...

I have FIOS the fiber optic connection I do not even think they offer one as low as 7mb/s I think the lowest is 15mb/s here.

That first one was my work internet (also uses FIOS + a T1 from AT&T on a load balancer)

Its the 20/4 package I think. Which is now a 20/10 I think if your a new customer.

Still like I said those close test sites are a distorted view of reality here is a test from across the entire North American Continent.



BTW we have a creepy amount of stuff in common ziddy, I have a AT headphone, and Ultimate Ears Earbuds, and a G73 just like you too and still use my MX518, just got a new one not too long ago since the old one was getting a bit worn out.

hmm..... I was interested in doing that test atm. because they are making renovations in internet antennas where I live and the connection have been crapy the last couple of weeks .....

I choose a server 1 continent & 1 sea away from where I live & I hope thats far enough

Mine keeps failing the packet test...just says that it couldn't test it. Anyone know why? I've tried both wireless and wired and to no avail.

 

Your router or firewall could be blocking ICMP packets.

 

Mine's quite good for ping but speed wise crap ... 1.5Mb/s download wth...

 

I had that happen. I had to pick several places until it worked for me.

If my ping is high, why does it still give me a grade of 'A'? I'm not big into online gaming, but I know L4D often became damn near unplayable for me due to my ping(~47ms).

I see a huge difference between ping values in both tests... they were both taken at the same time... strange...

i don't see why not, many online games of L4D2 i play 40odd are some of the lowest latencies people have. 47 is a pretty ok ping to have IMO

Cox sent me a letter saying they were giving me an upgrade from their standard 3mb service up to their 12mb service. Needless to say, I will not be paying the additional money to upgrade service on what I should be getting now.

 

I'm on Bright House (the local Time Warner re-name) since I'm just outside of the FIOS coverage area. Time Warner are a gang of thieves, as you can see:



$45 a month for 10/1 internet with more jitter than Michael J. Fox. (Too soon?)

test done on 300 mbit wifi.

I can have the same connection in belgium but that would cost me like 120€ a month. dont know what you hollanders euhm i mean dutch people pay

 

USA just sucks as far as bandwidth.

 

65 euro for triple play, can call free in netherlands and get digital tv + 14 hdtv channels.
