Sorry for my ignorance but I just saw videos of TF2 for the first time and I'm intrigued. The only negative I can see to this game is if it requires the running of steam or any other background apps in the process?

Does it? And what are your guys experience with the game?

It does require steam, but it takes hardly anything out of your system. It's really lightweight etc.

I love(!) this game, that's all I can say about it. We even have an NBR server now thanks to Unknown, and we play quite often with each other. It's a really interesting game, and you'll most likely get used to it quite fast if you start to play it.

Yeah, you run Steam in the background. Not really a negative, since it should have no impact on your performance, and you use it to access your friend list in-game. Usually I have Steam auto-start anyway... no impact on performance.

Great game. Not your usual multiplayer FPS, in that it's heavily based on team work and completing objectives, instead of just death matches. If you're thinking about getting it, I strongly recommend it. Also a member has put up an NBR server. See the TF2 thread.

I would definitely recommend it. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago, and with a new update coming Monday, there's never been a better time to buy then now. Try getting the Orange Box:
    http://www.amazon.com/Orange-Box-Pc...sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1218667270&sr=8-1
It includes TF2, as well as four other amazing games. You won't find a better deal than this.
And TF2 has several different classes with different play styles, so it's not hard to find one that suits your tastes and start kicking ***.

Incase your wondering how badly running the steam program in the background is on your system, here's what it takes.

9MB of system ram when running on the taskbar. So no, it won't affect your system performance keeping it running in the taskbar. keeping the main browser window open does take alot more, about as much as this webpage here would take, but keeping that window open isn't neccisary.

TF2 is increadably fun though, and well worth the $30 (usd) price.

TF2 is only $20 new at retail and online. At that price there's no exception to not be playing. But you can get the Orange Box for $40 in a store or $30 at amazon which is a even better deal since you get HL2 and Portal.

I agree - worth the money thrice over.

But you can find out for yourself - Valve is hosting a TF2 Free Weekend starting the 22nd in celebration of the Heavy Update.

For the record the game looks like one of the most fun and interesting games I've ever seen, however as I said I'm extremely apprehensive about running background processes and I thought that I had heard in the past that steam amounted to bloat/crapware. I think I will give the game a chance though when my 8660 finally arrives.

Steam is actually a really good little program. It puts all steam games in 1 place(along with any other game shortcut you want) so you don't have to keep your desktop crowded with game icons, and has a lot of nice community features, etc, along with a store. Whoever told you Steam was crap has probably never used it! Plus you can get some awesome deals during their weekend sales. A while ago they had Bioshock for $15. I'd compare it to the iTunes of video games.

I would be running it on an 8660 so specs won't be the problem.. I'm just wary of the spyware-ish properties of steam is all.

    Nope, nothing like that.

Whoever created steam, they did it with actual people in mind.

Steam actually was horrible a couple of years ago. The creators obviously took in criticism quite well and it has been improved to what you see today. Trust me, updating/installing/configuring games were a hassle back then.

Absolutely not. Steam has adware like Amazon.com is trying to swindle you. It's as safe as they come as long as you don't share your password with strangers.
