WoW. Its destroyed my brothers life. Literally destroyed it. He had so much going for him, and now its all gone. 12-16 hours a day, 7 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year, for 2 years now. We've tried so hard to help him quit.

The things I would do to Blizzard if I ever got my hands on them.......

Then for me, Far Cry 2. Too much hype for what it was. Buggy, crappy cardboard graphics, boring, nothing to do with Far Cry.

The worst game I ever played was Daikatana, a friend bought it for me for my birthday years ago, I played through the first level and it was SO bad, we took the cd out back and smashed it with a replica katana....

haha ya he lost his job. He paid for the account by working handyman jobs from time to time. Like mowing a lawn. He's 25. Put on over 100lbs in 2 years doing that.

Counter strike is also a game I hate. Stupid game. Nothing unique about it. Old. Time to move on.

I have to say it is runescape I hate the most. I do was pretty well addicted to it. I would play from when I got home from school for about 3 hours everyday for close to 9 months. I also want to add WoW, which from my impressions of watching people playing it is basically a flash version of Runescape. Funny though how I hate these games, but not pokemon which when I think about it was just as repetitive as runescape and WoW.

I also do not like Counter Strike, whether it is the original or source. I played it on two or three occasions at internet cafes but I never really enjoyed it all that much. The Call of Duty and Battlefield series were just so much more fun.

So you hated it and stopped playing it. The topic is "which game(s) do you hate but kept playing them anyway". But at least now we know who bought Daikatana. ;)

A lot of posts are misinterpreting the thread topic. Althought the OP needs to be read fully to understand the gist.

the game for me was Navy Field. i still play from time to time, but not like i used too. i would come home from work in the morning and the first thing i would do is play NF all morning instead of sleeping. when i lost my job i would play even more. finally i got so bored so of the game, that one day i wrote a macro program to cheat in the game. i got too greedy is selling stuff i got with that macro, so the mods found out and my account got banned. but 2 years lateri came back to the game a few hours per week when my on-line team mates gave me a new mid level account. if they would not have given me that account i would not play. i am over my addiction of that stupid game but its still fun to play with people that you meet online. i even meet one of them and we still hang out every other weekend in person, not in the game.

The one game I really hate is World of Warcraft. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't admit to spending years playing this MMO and it consuming my life. However, what I specifically despise about this game is the fact that it has spawned a sea of "me-too" MMO's that lack creativity, original content, and general playability (aka fun factor).

You look at any current MMO today, post-WoW, and you can immediately see the similarities in content, UI, design, characters, classes, mechanics, combat, the list goes on and on. It's great that WoW is the heavyweight MMO to which all other MMO's are compared against. Unfortunately, these MMO's are also made from the same tired mold as WoW, and not everyone is eager to play a game that is.

Developers are more intent on building a look-alike MMO such as WoW because it's a safe bet. They aren't interested in creating a truly unique game because there is too much risk. It may sound like I'm hating on WoW, but seriously, look at it from my point of view. WoW has gotten so big, so huge in the MMO arena, that developers are feeding gamers with what they think will sell, not necessarily what the players want.

Personally, I feel that WoW stymies true creativity in other developers... it's much too costly to take a chance and produce a unique MMO and have it flop (Horizons is just one example). The result is a market inundated with me-too MMO's that lack any real originality.

IMO WoW is based off of Square Enix's FFXI but with less depth to it. I hate FFXI because it stressed me out (I was 14 yrs old when I started), even though I was apart of the elite bunch (2005-2006).

You made a statement in which you said that WoW was based off FFXI. I'm curious to know how. Quite frankly, if anything, all MMO's owe their "basis" to UO or perhaps EverQuest.

If you played FFXI you'd know what I mean. In your previous post you state that Most MMO's take their ideas from WoW, and I found that to be false, but that's just my opinion. What is UO?

Ultima Online, one of the first MMOs. It was definitely one of the pioneers of the genre.
WoW took a lot of ideas from Everquest, considering that it's developers used to be in high end Everquest raiding guilds.

However, even Everquest was based off Diku MUDs and then there was Ultima Online before it and then after that Asheron's Call and Dark Ages of Camelot.

    probably Final Fantasy X: X-2

or whatever it was... the sequel to FFX. the game was TERRIBAD and i spent money on it without really researching reviews or previews because i thought it had to have been good since it followed up FFX. what a terrible game. i spent perhaps 30 minutes the first time playing, got pissed off, then played it a few months later for maybe another hour, and then i just had to cry because i wasted money on that terrible game.

i absolutely despised it and felt that it could have ruined the franchise. seriously, it's that bad. in fact, i haven't touched any Final Fantasy game after that (granted, there's only been a few new ones for console, and then some for handhelds).

anyways, that is the one game i really hate....

For me it'll be Civilization 4 Complete and the Diablo 2 pack, the former affected me so badly over a 2 week period I had to stop playing to prevent it from affecting my work permanently while the latter is fun to play but has too much emphasis on MF for items to make the game easier on hell difficulty.

I'd like to also add that I hated COD4(call of duty 4) because even a newbie could play like a pro in just a matter of an hour. And the only thing that kept me playing after I reached level 55 gold cross, was gamebattles.com

Sins of a Solar Empire. I Love it but hate it because it takes so dang long to play a round. I wish I had the time to play multiple rounds, but when things get heated I can play for hours just playing loosey goosey chasing those last rogue enemies to kill them.

Almost everybody missed the actual question I was asking.

"The game you hate but you made yourself pay anyways for X reason"

Not just the game you hate as there are tons of games we all hate, but I wanted to see who has forced themselves to play a game they didnt like anyways and why.

I played through a pain in the ps1 game ages back... I think it was monster rancher, thats the one sunk 200+ hrs in it and I couldn't figure out how to get past b grade. I only ever got lucky once or twice and would have the odd mocchi get to B grade.

Mind you I recently went back to it and suddenly the game made sense, all of those little numbers (stats) actually affected the battle... Oh my You mean it was repetative to the extreme? no story? yup it had it all but but was it a good game to muddle through, that is now hated by me

Well a theory as to why people play WoW, Runescape, and all of those other grinding heavy games.

These games are all addictive because everyone just want to reach that next achievement whether it may be getting that perfect weapon or getting to the next level. When we actually reach that achievement, we get a big sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from the game which gives us the impetus to seek out accomplishing that next goal.

And to be consistent with the OP, I hate the game because it's insipid and revolting, and should be confined to ancient laptops decorated with lipstick and Hello Kitty stickers; certainly not included with Windows by default!

I would like to say all MMORPG!
    They are evil!
The more MONEY(real world) you spend, the stronger you are!
The more TIME you spend, the higher the level you gain!
If I have too much MONEY, I would go to the MMORPG company, and have them make me the strongest equipments and levels.
Play without using MONEY is absurb! You would be damn weak compared to those who use MONEY.
Play with HACK! Brilliant! I like this!! Since I hate MMORPG, so, HACK!!

    BUT

NO MATTER HOW YOU PLAY AND WHAT YOU DO, NO SKILL or INT GAINED EVEN YOU'RE TOP 1. People won't know you're TOP 1 in MMORPG games but if you are WCG TOP 1, I guess hmmmmmm.

I prefered LAN games or strategics games which use BRAIN.

    -NO OFFENSE-

Nearly all of the big mainstream MMO's out there, that is, WoW, EQ2, WAR, Conan, et al. do not allow real world monies to be used to purchase in game equipment and money. It's against their EULA and TOS.

Now, for the smaller MMO's out there that utilize a microtransaction business model, in which players get to play the game for free, but have to pay to get premium items, if you think about it, it's the only way for that MMO to really survive. Simply put, it lacks the backing of big time developers like Microsoft, EA, Blizzard, etc., where they can absorb the astronomical costs of running an MMO.

Without some form of monetary support from the players, the MMO gaming business is as good as dead. You need either a standard paying cycle or a microtransaction approach to keep an MMO relevant and growing. Unless you're NCSoft, in which case you're screwed anyway with multiple failed MMO's under your belt.

I fail to realize how this is a problem? This is no different than someone playing BF2 for 10 hours a day and has all the unlocks, versus some poor soul who plays 10 hours a week and only has a handful of unlocks. It's like this in any game out there today, be it MMO, RTS, FPS, whatever.

LOL! Hate the creator instead? I think this would be more logic.

    @garetjax,
The higher the level you GAIN really, but what you get is nothing.
You didn't gain anything indeed(especially hire some1 to play). Not like LAN games your skill of playing it would improved.

If I have lots of money(imagine I am 2nd or 3rd after bill gates), I would hire a few people to play my very own character. I don't need to play but I am still TOP 1.
Compared to LAN games such as Counter Strike, you hire people and play for you but you're not TOP 1. Instead, they are TOP 1.

    Conclusion,
MMORPG can be manipulated by MONEY. I can have TOP 1 with if I hire a lot of people and play for me.
LAN games cant be manipulated by MONEY. It is the SKILL of your own, you can't make it then you really can't and LOSE the game.

NO brainer games and brainer games.

the problem with mmorpgs is when youre in a raiding guild at least (imo).
You feel the need (and so do others in the guild) to always be there for raids even when you can't be there.
I mean I've raided quite some times while being really sick, also in my case (eq2) I raided US times so my raid times were 2:00 am till around 7 am 3-4 nights a week (for about 2.5 years).
I quit a year ago which was a good thing, the last year I was less hardcore bc of my job and some other stuff so when the guild left eq2 I felt a bit of relief too.
I sometimes miss it raiding is awesome and working together with other people to accomplish something eventho it's digital/not real is a good feeling.
I felt bad for playing the game at times cause it affected the way i planned my life raiding at such late times, also I shouldve thrown myself more on other things instead of playing eq2.
Still I don't hate the game I sometimes hated myself for playing it, that's why I said "don't hate the game hate the person playing it" cause you make the choice yourself to do so.

I guess I do not understand your logic then because I fail to see the difference in being a top player in a LAN versus being one in an MMO. All things being equal, the skill of playing a LAN game versus an MMO is still the same. The player that is dedicated, willing to put forth the time and training to become the best at what they do, will achieve that goal regardless of the genre.

I disagree. MMO's feature player vs. player combat either in an instanced setting, or set in the game world in "real time", ie. ganking. Dying in PvP can lead to corpse runs, loss of XP, gear, items, or other penalties enacted on the player.

PvP combat is visceral, it is intense, and it requires a thorough knowledge of the limitations of both your character and of yourself. Personally, in my experience as a veteran MMO gamer since early 2000, skill trumps gear/items/loot every time. Top guilds look for the very best, and they will know instantly if you are for real, or merely a poser. Having someone stand in for you will only work for so long.

You say that you do not really "lose" the game in an MMO. I would consider dying or death as "losing". Especially in the early days of EverQuest when playing on a red server such as Rallos Zek and dying to a PK'r meant that they could loot whatever the hell they wanted off your corpse.

After all, I would said, I don't like MMORPG. LOL. But I do not disagree with you.
I know some great MMORPG really challeging. This can be overcome by hiring skilled people to play for you. Yet, you can play on your own to improve the "skill" but MMORPG is judged on level and equipments not like LAN games purely judged by skills, strategics, real time tactics and many more.
The money actually do the works. LOL.
Imagine if no money, MMORPG would be dead. This same to LAN games. If they give the games for FREE, Hmmm... Impossible, they would bankrupt.
But in MMORPG games money do play more an important role compared to LAN games.
LAN games, you just need to buy and install to your computer. Play and pays electric bills.
MMORPG, you need to download, install and pay for the gaming needs such as Molpoints every month or every few months. Additionally, you need to pay electric bills too.

Conclusion, in a long term of playing it, you would find yourself burning the money on play MMOPRG games.

Sounds insult but it is not:
So far, I know some people would disagree whatever stuffs he/she thinks before thinking it a few times. Some of them even reflect/reject the idea without thinking just like the when a flies fly to your eyes and you close your eyes without hesitate.
Personally, I know I love to disagree with other people too but I do not disagree 100% as someone does.
Because nothing is perfect, why would you disagree it 100%/totally? Even the strongest Antivirus claim to be TOP 1 can still be infected by viruses.
Try to accept some ideas and think about it. Facts are harder to accept but try. Now, I found MMORPG games are better than I thought after reading some great statements. This is why you do not argue with Counter Strike example I shown. You have accepted it.

    User preferences:
MMORPG and LAN games are all user preferences. Even I hate MMORPG games, but I won't stop people to playing it. Just keep in my mind that it is REAL money burner and advise some friends stop playing it(didn't force them). Some of them eventually stop playing MMORPG games.

I was addicted to WoW for 2 years and it took me 3 tries to stop playing it. I hated the idea that I was spending 15 bucks a month to play it when I wasn't even really "playing" it. 90% of the time I would sit in auction house and just play the market for up to 10-14 hours a day when i was at my worst  . I hate that game with a passion for how much time I have put into it...even if it was satisfying to make large sums of money off of peoples poor pricing...
