you'll prolly remember making all this posts of "what computer should i get" and " i play mmorpgs, mainly wow" but thats it im done with wow, cuz of too much addiction and getting MAD after losing an arena match, so anyhow help me out on this one, i need a softcore game (FPS, rpg) stratergy base like aoe2, etc, paying monthly sub is a no-no, and a game that i can play with my 2 buddies, so far ive had:
Guild wars, Starcraft, starcraft 2 (not sure if its out yet), warcraft III, final fantasy (it has monthly sub?), crysis.
throw me some "must pc gameS" thanks!!!
-
Oblivion will keep you occupied for a long time,
Company of heroes is the best RTS i've played in a long time
The orange box is amazing value, probably the first game you should get! -
Get Team Fortress 2 and Day of Defeat:Source.
You will love it! -
The Orange Box, or just Team Fortress 2 if you don't want the other games. Simply amazing, and it is constantly updated with new content.

I suggest you purchase a copy of Battlefield 2(very cheap these days) and give Project Reality mod a try. Basically Project Reality it's one of the most realistic combat games you'll set your eyes on. I'm suggesting Project Reality, because it's not just an FPS game, but rather takes some true tactics, strategy, and teamwork(join squad and use microphone communication) to accomplish through. It's not just a run and gun game like Counter Strike (no disrespect). This mod has a lot of new features such as destructible buildings, 17km square foot maps, GPS and laser guided bombs, 3d sights, civilians, limited kits system, suppression affect, etc which sets it apart from a lot of games and mods out there. Above all you have many conventional armies to choose from. (USMC, US Army, British Army, PLA, fictional Militia/Chech, MEC, Insurgents, and with more to come)
At the moment the latest version is PR v0.75, but PR v0.8 is to be released soon, so I suggest give it a try.
Hers the link to the site:

any good stratergy based games, i dont know the words but like "warcraft 3, aoe 2, aoe 3, command and conq etc"
-
your approach to gaming will not change regardless of what genre or how addicting it is. so if you meant "how do i replace addiction with another addiction" then try:
Rome: TW
Civ IV
CC: Tiberium wars
Age of Mythology
World in conflict
Company of heroes
Dawn of war
Age III
Battle for middle earth
Rise of nations
most of them have expansions so you'll have plenty of content whichever you choose to play. -
Starcraft. It's cheap. Your buddies won't complain and if you all start together, it'll be really fun.
Seriously though, it's an amazing game, you should definitely try it out! -

Do people still play SC online? I thought about installing it the other day but decided to go with WC3 + TFT since I figured it would have more of a community and even its died down alot since when I used to play.
I remember nearly 800+ custom games going on at once with a large varity, lots of cool rpg's, tower wars, hero wars, escape from the XXX, dota, XXX maul, and much much much more and now when I log on its just dota and a few other things. -
Age of Conan(i suggest wait a while for this to blossom)
Warhammer online
Max Payne(cant go wrong with a classic) -
I'd say TF2 as well. Or CoD4. If you're talking about Final Fantasy XI, yes it has a $14/month fee. Pretty good game while it lasts though.

Dude, Diablo II LoD!
-
Heh, I quit playing retail WoW for about 3 years ago due to the same reasons you listed: All I did was play the game, I became furious after losing battleground games, I hated everyone, etc. And when I say I quit, I really did "just quit." I think I was playing in Arathi Basin, team lost, and I got angry. Then I froze my account and told all my friends I can talk to them again!
For like 2 years I was like, yay I stoped playing!
...Guess what I do now... I play on a private server, pretty much everyday.
At least I'm not paying $15 a month anymore...
You always go back to it -
How come people say WoW is addicting? I played it for three days and thought "why the hell am I playng this crap?" I mean, there are much better and free mmorpgs out there.
But you should try these games : Titan Quest, Oblivion, Devil May Cry 4 and Final Fantasy VIII. -
-
if u wanna learn how to play sc, i can teach u a bit
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
i played the trial of WoW... i played for basically a full day, said to myself "wtf just happened to today?" and then uninstalled the sucker from my computer.
no relapses. -
lol, someone told you that Final Fantasy XI wasn't as big of a time sink as WoW. They must be stuck on lvl 30 then.
I have played both, and FFXI is, by a gigantic margin, the most time-involved MMORP on the face of the planet. Freakin Everquest, at it's worse, was maybe 1/2 as bad as FFXI.
I once played that game for 12 hours straight, every day, for about 2 weeks. This was when I was out of work. I loved every minute of it, sure, but still. -

I always found MMORPGS really boring... I need quick 4 minute CS:S matches to keep my attention, but sometimes that too turns into 5-6 hours of gaming. I remember seeing a video somewhere of a kid losing a css game at a lan party and attempting to pick up the monitor and failing and having it fall on him.
-
I wasted far too much time on wow. I loved WC1, WC2, and WC3 but the community in WoW left me feeling dirty.

I haven't played WoW in a year, but I just want to tell the people who are asking how WoW is addictive to get to a higher level before you make an assumption. The addiction is when you get to level 70 and you’re not just playing a game, but instead you’re involved with hundreds of other people in your clan trying to accomplish different objectives like raids or PvP. It’s not the solo experience but the social experience. I feel like the whole process of 1-60 and now 1-70 is just a purgatory for what’s to happen at 70. Some people enjoy leveling, but I know I didn't like it that much.
I recommend taking a look at Warhammer Online, which is suppose to be like WoW but better. It’s coming out in a month. Until then you can play games like:
Battlefield 2 (My favorite game!)
CoD 4
Warcraft III (Custom Games Specifically)
Day of Defeat: Source
Counter-Strike: Source
Team Fortress 2
Guild Wars (I would recommend, but I never got into this game. I never understood the catch like others don't understand WoW)
Hope this helps. I have mostly left the computer and started playing games like Halo 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company on the 360. I will probably come back for Warhammer Online. I hoped AoC would be my new fix instead of WoW, but it just wasn't what was promised when it first came out. I don't mean to disrespect those who love it, and I hope it gets to be what was promised because it has so much potential. -

Sins of a Solar Empire
Good looking game and lots of fun to play with friends (or enemies).
-
What if you don't have any friends?
-
Wrath of the Lich King would probably be a fun game to start up in the fall.
-
-
Wrath of the lich king is not coming out til the holidays btw so I wouldn't look for that in the fall unless you consider late November to December Fall.
-
-
I was addicted for 3 months; just before I got sucked in completely, I canceled my account.
I really liked exploring new areas and stuff. Things got boring when I got to around 55-60, because it took many many hours to level. At that point I pretty much realized how pointless the game had become. -
PvPing is probably the best part of WoW.
Just thought I'd say that. -
-
hey, I just quit WoW myself, for similar reasons. Playing at high ratings always becomes stressful instead of fun (for me).
I got my laptop, was ready to install WoW...and then thought..."why would I play this game? It's not even fun anymore." So I didn't.
I really recommend call of duty 4. I've never been a fan of shooters, but this game is pretty amazing. You get sucked in the same way as WoW, but there are usually no stakes. You can quit playing anytime. It's pure fun...no 20 minute matches which you just want to end. -
Surprizingly, yes, there are actually about 3000 players on the servers at any given time. not to mention that Koreans STILL have multiple tv channels dedicated just to starcraft matches, and they have huge tournaments for Starcraft every week..
Believe me, starcraft will NEVER die!
Koreans will make sure of that! -
I quited WoW like 2 years ago because i got tired of more of the same and the amount of time that went into it. But i do miss a good game atm done playing cs:s bf2 and cod4 and i feel like playing a moorpg think i give Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures a try
-
if you like strategy games, play the homeworld series. good storyline, graphics that are still decent today, and would run at max settings even on most of today's low end pc's.
-
honestly if the reasons you quit WoW was because of that, you shouldn't play any MMO or even Online. Should just stick with offline games. Everyone gets a bit frustrated on Arena and BG when you get paired against a burn team or premade, but to quit because you lose....lol
-
WoW isnt a bad game. People just take it TOO seriously. In the end people forget the true purpose of WoW. Its a game! Have fun! People get too caught up in getting the best gear, and the best arena ratings, and raiding for 29 hours of the day. Just sit down, and have some fun! Thats what I do. Me and 4 of my friends party up and do some Battlegrounds, some World PvP and in 45 mins we are done! We had our fun and we move on. If you cant have fun with WoW, dont play it. Its that simple.
-
-
i HIGHLY suggest guild wars. it lasted me 3 years, and i got a few of my buddies to play with me. only problem with it is if you want to get into PvP and such you will want all of the games, which will run you at over 100 bucks. but if you just wanna do pve, you only need one, and i suggest prophacies.
-
what you need are games that you can stop playing for a month, and get back on and you are just as powerful as everyone else.
guild wars is amazing for a semi mmo feel, but wait until guild wars 2 comes out. you will be happier with that.
get a shooter like unreal 2004 or unreal 3 and some small unit tactics or RTS like warcraft 3 or starcraft. puzzle games are also a good way of occupying your time. try playing myst if you never did. -
Agreed guild wars is quite good, and runs great for how good the graphics still are. Also agree with unreal 2004, I play it to this day, can't be beat. Never got into unreal 3 much.
-
KOTOR:2? I wasted a lot of time playing that. Fun!
-
guild wars was incredibly boring for me...all except the PvP, which was more balanced than any MMO I've ever seen
-
I own Lineage 2, City of Heroes and Guild Wars... I've never even installed L2 or CoH and I tried playing GW for 30 minutes. Didn't fly. I'm still playing WoW.
-
^^
exactly y i quit wow, arena @ 2300+ is rather "frustated" and annoyin then fun. wow is no doubt unbalanced, (although i was plying druid/lock, so my "qq" isnt abt that) but wow is also rather more RNG based (random number generator) then skillz, which would **** me off, anyways, gttin back on topic, i think im gonna go ahead and convince friends for playing starcraft, although they are stuck on "dude warcraft 3 is the best" not sure which one to go for, but i would select one of the above that was discussed mostly in the thread, i.e., guild wars, warhamer, starcraft, battlefield 2, etc.
Thanks for all the replies! -
WoW can easily get very addicting. I think that in total I must have had about 130 days played. Like a lot of people say, it really does take a toll on your social life and you end up being some kind of secluded loser. Thank god I quit it.
And private servers are fun at first when you play with friends but they quickly become crap when you see how many bugs there are compared to normal servers. Also the battles are only half-scripted so they are very boring and easy. What I found fun on regular servers was how challenging some of the boss battles could be and how fun they were.
Now as for games that I would recommend you getting:
- Orange Box: This has 3 great games in one. If you like first person shooters then you are going to get hours of crazy fun out of TF2. Portal is a pretty short game but it's very innovative and it is a great experience. And you give the HL2 series a spin if you haven't. Personally it's my favorite series in the way the story unfolds. The atmosphere is also on another level than most FPS.
- Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl: I am currently playing this and it is a very good open ended shooter. You take on multiple missions to progress through the game and the atmosphere is very well done. It also blends in some elements of RPG. It might be a little slow paced though for some people.
- Crysis: If your computer can handle it on decent settings, definitely give it a shot. People who say it's only about graphics are wrong. Although it is true that the graphics alone could make the game enjoyable, the gameplay itself is very good. If you ask me the thing that ruined the game was the second half with the aliens. Until then it was perfect.
- Diablo 2: Got it for about 10 dollars with the expansion. Good game to play with friends but after beating the first difficulty I really did not feel like playing through the same things again on higher difficulties. Gives you a couple hours of fun if you are bored.
- Warcraft 3 + FT: I haven't actually played this in a while but I remember it being very fun with a couple of friends even though I was really bad at it. It is a little boring without friends though.
- Counter-Strike Source: I'll admit, I am a huge fan of CS. Was playing CS daily for about 3 years and now I'm playing quite frequently Source. It's funny because even though it is probably one of the most repetitive game on the face of the planet, it never gets boring for me. You can just hop on for a few minutes and have a lot of fun.
There is also a couple of good games to look forward to in the near future. A few that I can name are:
- Spore: Looks like a very fun game where you create creature and have to make them evolve.
- Stalker Clear Sky: If you've liked the first one, I'm sure the second one will deliver.
- Far Cry 2: Looks like one heck of a shooter with amazing graphics (personally can't wait for this one)
- Crysis Warhead: Crysis Expansion. Side story happening at the same time as Crysis on the other side of the map.
- Left 4 Dead: Zombies + CSS engine = Awesomeness
- Project Origin: Sequel to F.E.A.R . Sure to bring lots of fright to you and have good gunfight.
- Fallout 3: It's in 3d! -
Don't bother with AOC for another 3-4 months. It's a fun game, but you'll grow bored of it after a month and regret ever buying it.
WAR on the other hand is badass. Release date is mid september. F'in amazing game. I can definetly see wow killing potential with this one.
edit: yes cod4 is one badass game. Played it nonstop for 2months. Still play the odd map every once in awhile. -
I've come to know that the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2 is really fun.
That's it im quittin WoW
