Yes, the newest games can be played at low-medium settings with appropriate drivers.

Perhaps.. It's at par with the older X1600/ X1700/ Go7600, so yes, low-med settings wouldn't be a problem, as long as you are not trying to run Crysis/ Bioshock/ Lost Planet and the likes...

Yeap, 'newest games' is hard to use as a term as dates past by quickly. I'd say it'll play 'pre summer 2007' games well at low-medium, the upcoming ones would be expecting too much at medium.

I am able to play C&C3 at high settings. I don't play many fps though.

Here are my benchmarks with 162.18 gpu drivers for my 256mb 8400M GT:
    3dmark05: 4632
    3dmark06: 2632
    PCmark05: 5610

That just goes to show how impressive of a card the 8400GT is :) , nice scores.

For reference this is just as good as the GDDR2 versions of the 8600gs and 8600gt in that game at those settings. Seems like memory bandwidth is everything with these cards.

I know some people won't like me saying it but unless your getting the 8600gs or gt with memory clocked at 700mhz it really isn't worth it (nvidia probably realized this too and published reference specs for both cards at 700)

Hmm.. those scores are at 1024x768.. while the scores of the 8600 series is around that for 1280x1024... I think that's the part being missed here..

yeah resolution is going to come into play big time with the 8400 cards.

if you are in 1280x800, you are probably fine with an 8400m gt. 8600m gt's are more powerful and usually get put into laptops with high resolutions.

I have a Vaio VGN-FZ190 with Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz, 2GB RAM, and the 8400M GT gpu. I have overclocked it slightly, core speed by 43 Mhz (493 total) and memory by 55 Mhz (55 total). It gets a 5.3 for its Experience Index Score in gaming graphics and 5.9 in Aero. I just played the Bioshock demo on full settings smoothly, but gets a bit choppy at demanding parts. To run it seamlessly I changed the resolution to 1024x600, so what was said about resolution up this page is very true. While i know this isn't at factory speed or native resolution (1280x800), it shows the potential of the 8400M GT. Don't count it out from new games yet.

edit-Thought I'd point this out: my current overclocking gives the card a higher clock speed than an 8600M GT. Before someone shouts at me I realize this doesn't make it better, just putting things in perspective.
