you know, even if there were 2 exact same notebooks with the same graphics card, the maxed clocks before artifacting or overheating will differ widely between the two notebooks.

i wish the 8400gt was on the xps m1330 or the sony vaio sz series, instead of the crappy 8400m gs currently on it.

Games run very well on it too!

have you broken the 4k barrier yet?

my 8400gs starts artifacting with a 100 mhz OC. :(

also you need to update your sig :p

Lol the 4k will come sooner or later... Too get to that point i need to OC to 700/731.

    Ill have to search artifacting.

That kinda sucks that at 100mhz+ your 8400M GS artifacts..

    Is it a DDR2 or DDR3?

    DDR2 is understandable

    I believe it is ddr2.

At a 120Mhz OC there is severe artifacting on the screen and the computer hangs. Either that or a driver error pops up and goes back to stock clocks.

    Driver 175.80
    Oc 600\1200\800
Temps range from the low 60's to low 70's.

I'll have to clean the dust out of my laptop sometime soon and apply some AS5 as my temps never used to go above 65C while gaming. I actually used to get worried when i seen it so high :D

    3dmark06 scores:

    167.43 @ 1280 x 768
    Stock: 2656
    OC: 3429

    174.74 @ 1280 x 768
    Stock: 2733
    OC: 3582

    169.09 @ 1280 x 854
    Stock: 2512
    OC: 3279

    175.80 @ 1280 x 854

Remember guys , you're testing at lower than 1280x1024, which is what people use for standard benchmarking...

Yeah thats true but some people claim having 4.6k in 3Dmark with the 8600M GT. Which is not at 1280x1024..thats at 1280x800.

So basically 8600M GT would score maybe 3.7k in 3Dmark at 1280x1024

Right. Still, the 8400M GT packs a nice power for a small laptop.
Just make sure you don`t fry it...
    Good luck.

Loving mine, can see past results in sig. I haven't ran it with my new OC, but I should. I never let my temps get above 76... that's my threshold. Using 174.74, working flawlessly.

You should try the 175.75 drivers. Great performance drivers!

174.74 is like 1~2 months old..not many fixes. Might run a bit hot

Overclocks will not stick....I've tried the stock drivers, 174.75 175.75, etc...and RivaTuner and Ntune. Just reverts back to 450/600 straight away.

Do Sony have some sort of custom bios? Can I flash it to a 'normal' 8400gt, or what's the story with these locked clocks?

For some reason, 169.04 work great! Why is that, why can't I overclock on the 17x series drivers when everyone else can??

Well, at least it's somewhat sorted now....thanks again MegaMan, rep for you :)

Well mine is getting along happily at 550/700 - I won't bring it any higher as I don't need to, won't be playing a lot of games on it and those I do, work OK at those clocks.

COD4 at 1280x800 high textures, all other options (glow, DOF, etc to OFF)

Framerate in bottom right, I deliberately took pictures of it in ACTION, not staring at walls, indoors, etc.

Yup, seems about right. I play at the same settings, but all on "Extra", and get about 40+ FPS.

So what's the best driver avaliable for 8400M GT so far? 174.74, 174.75, 167.43, or 169.04?

    Thanks.

The latest drivers are usually the most optimised for latest games, and include fixes for problems people have reported etc. I'm using 175.80 now, 174.74 was a little faster i think but not much.

    Counter Strike Stress Test:

Resolution: 1024x768 (i like it at this res ...its the best for my skill)
    Settings: All high
    Anti-Aliasing: 16Qx
    Anistropic Filtering: 16x
    Vsync: Disabled

    Avg fps: 120fps avg

    Drivers: 177.35

    Overclocked drivers--> 675/731

Overall i enjoy these settings but its not my permanent due to some (little) image tearing.
I didnt lower the resolution because it couldnt run on native (1280x800). I chose 1024x768 because it offer the best balance between performance, mouse speed and visibility.
