My screenshots should give an idea of the minimum performance to expect from the 8400m series. I have a 64m gs version so only the g version is slower. A 1.66ghz processor so again fairly slow, 5400rpm hd, slow, 2.5gb ram
Screenshots include (not all by me)
Quake 4
Crysis
Bioshock
Conflict Denied Ops
Medal of Honour Airbourne
unreal tournament 3
Call of Duty 4

The Witcher
Fifa 08
Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War: Soulstorm

I'll have my new dell laptop with a 8400M GS coming probably by the end of the week. I'll post some screens when it comes if anyone cares... -
I think people will appreciate this more if you post screenshots of newer games.
-
i would but i dont have newer games. Suggest some and I might go over to ebgames and do a 7 day return. I live in the middle of nowhere in australia its not easy to find things. Costs me $50 in petrol to drive to town and back, then $90 for the game. Cant download anything because i have a 500mb limit.
Wednesday or thursday I will try and find a copy of crysis and test it for you people, but i dont think it will work because i only have 1gb ram and it wants 1.5gb for vista. But for you guys I will try. -
quake 4 somehow runs better on ultra high than on high. I checked and it definatly says its running ultra high, graphics are better and running from 30-65 fps still, aa is now off though and I was on power. I dont know what its doing because I only have 320mb on the card and it says it wants 500mb to run ultra high and not recommended but it runs better and looks better.
-
I'll take some shots later but i've got the gs 128mb with 2gb or ram and 2.2ghz C2D and been running
Rainbow Six vegas (800x600 , low graphics) - looks pretty sharp actually and is smooth.
Call of Duty 4 (1280 x 800, low settings) - again looks sweet and plays smooth
CSS (1280 x 800, high settings 4x aa) never below 40 fps
I won't be trying crysis as I think its boring to play and probably won't work anyway lol -
I actually got quake 4 running at 1280x1024 with ultra high and aax2 all effects on it ran at 15-50fps but it was only just playable, I wouldnt suggest it unless you really, really want the tiny increase in details. Will post some more screenshots tomorrow when I am in town, so I have the faster connection and hopefully some new games, will buy and return if they dont run well.
I played need for speed pro street demo on the laptop a while ago and it ran very well at the lowest settings, didnt look to bad. I know it ran terrible at max settings, but I didnt like the game so never bothered to get a good trade off on performance and quality. But it will run if you want to play it.
I might try crysis, I'm thinking along the same lines as you. It will run someone on the 7400m thread had it with everything low at 10-20fps and he didnt have the crysis drivers, which supposedly give a good boost. If I get crysis it will most likely be a 7 day return. Call of duty 4 was my other option.
If anyone wants a specific new game I will try and get it if you post in the next 48 hours or so as I will be staying in town. -
I'll post some COD4 pictures up soon. Looks pretty good imo
-
I might try "The witcher" if it is in stock at the local. My system doesnt actually meet the min requirements of 1.5gb ram but I will try anyway.

Screenshots taken on Geforce 8400M GS (@ 450/900/700) with a T7700
Attempted to take all shots on the most demanding stage of each game.
Resolution sacrificed for image/texture/effects quality. AA off on all games.
Performance suffers on newer titles.

great screenshots bunbuns, that is a huge variety of games. Does anyone have any specific requests that they might want me to do?
Also Bunbuns what driver are you using?
I am using whitetiger's hp/compaq drivers from laptopvideo2go. Which are 167.95 from dell modified for hp. -
Games available at the local are: The witcher, Call of duty 4 (already posted by another), crysis, medal of honor airbourne, and supreme commander. Others are available but I have an xbox360 to play games on so really the laptop is only for when I'm away from the box and for pc exclusives.
-
I would be really grateful if someone posted screenshots of Crysis as no-one has done this yet
Maybe if you even overclock your card a bit and see how much better it runs?
-
Best drivers i found atm are the 169.04 from laptopvideo2go.com . It has full mobile card support and overclocking with rivatuner 2.06.
I have attached my .inf file with some custom lower 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions like 768x405 and 800x500 for 169.04.
Crysis is just playable but not a fun experience on the 8400M GS.
Crysis Demo - 640x480 (Forced) - Low/Medium (Custom CVarGroups Settings, Shader/Shadows On)
Tomb Raider Legends - 864x480 - High (Next Gen Content)

I have ordered a 2gb module to upgrade my notebook so hopefully it will turn up tomorrow. Then I will have a go at the full version of crysis to see if it runs better than the demo. I might try the witcher today if I can find it.
-
Allright sounds good. I have heard the full version of Crysis is even more demanding so should be interesting what speeds you get on the 8400M GS.
johnyd i was looking at the Quake4 Pics and noticed i was getting the same framerate. Maybe put settings on High instead of Ultra High? (Ultra High turns off texture compression causing heavy video memory usage
)
-
Do any 8400 users own a copy of a copy of Gears of War (PC) or Bio Shock (PC)? If so, please, if it's not too much trouble, upload a couple of shots of each game as I use an 8400 card and am giving thought to buying both titles within the next week.
-
for some reason my textures are really fuzzy no matter what setting i play at on quake. I think I must have changed a driver setting to performance, and am about to check now. I tired medal of honor airbourne today (while downloading something so I took a performance hit) and barely got playable framerates at the lowest possible settings. Will try again when the dl finishes.
-
moha lowest possible settings
Conclusion: As yet not playable. -
I have found out that my copy of quake 4 does not seem to have any performance difference or even look any different no matter what quality setting i choose I only seem to get undetailed textures. NVcontrol panel is set to max quality for every thing so its not its fault.
-
Fixed quake 4 and the pics look as good as they should, and I did some extra editing to get some custom 16:10 resolutions running with 4 ansio and some other advanced performance things running. I also got Medal of honor airborne running once the download stopped.
Bit worried when the menu cant run at 24fps
Looking bad
Better
Conclusion: Playable, even though the numbers dont look that great the game play isnt that bad, and I will be finishing the game. The fps doesnt get over 40 very often but it drops below 20 even less, mostly only when I had to page to disk and when it was obviously loading. Picture isnt that bad, still pretty good even at low. It wont make the hardcore gamers happy but it is enough for a casual gamer like me both graphics and performance wise. -
Got my 2gb of ram today and had a play of some games. The fps didnt get any higher but they were much more stable and game play was smoother. I didnt drop below 30 when playing the entire first level of moh: airborne.
-
After returning the game I found some extra settings in a config file that would of improved the performance by a fair bit. Just downloaded and tested the call of duty 4 demo. Will post shots soon.
-
The default settings
640x480 everything on, textures auto
Everything off/low textures low
What I play at
Conclusion: Runs easily on the 8400m. With everything off or low it barely drops below 40 fps and this game is smooth enough running at high 20's. Can turn the eye candy up on low res. But shadows have a roughly 15fps impact. The rest was not noticable as being on or off really. -
The witcher will not run on my notebook at all because it detects my card as only having 64mb ram rather than including any turbocache ram. Bugger
-
Bioshock demo
no reflections
reflections
640x480 high detail
dx10 mode gave higher preformance.
turning textures to med and shadowmap off gave 30-80fps -
-
Unreal tournament 3 - changing the post processing setting gave about the same performance across the scale. Something said that it wouldnt change without a restart not sure what though. Restarting the demo reset the settings to default. I think it was world detail.
AOE3 - high (not highest) settings, no aa native resolution. Forgot to take a water screen, if you will take my word it was 30fps with two starting fishing boats in view. -
AOE3 Water shot
Crysis forced 640x480 med/low custom cvars for shadows and ansio 4
The game feels sort of smooth even at 15 fps. Its not great and the graphics kinda suck if you go lower.
The game runs at 3 fps when you set everything to very high at 1024x768, looks good though. -
FIFA 08 defualt settings.
-
Warhammer 40,000 1280x800 everything max
-
conflict denied ops
Not worth playing at settings. Low/off 640x480 shadows and decals on. -
I dont know why you're running these at resolutions such as 640x480, with high settings. I wont do any res lower then 1280x800 on any game. Res is far more important then effects.
-
scaling isnt that bad on my screens so I play at the highest detail rather than resolution. Normally I can get high at low or not at all on higher settings. I will try some at lower detail higher res though.
The Witcher 1024x640 med/low demo 1.2 with the command to allow play.
I took shots of cut scenes because they were about the most taxing part of the game I had seen while playing. It normally runs around 30-40 outdoors and 40-50 in houses. -
-
Hey how does bf2 run overall on a 8400m gs? I saw the screenshot on the other page with only 31fps.
Cheers. -
Here yah go 1280x800 at 50fps! 48 Bots too.
BF2 runs fine. 31fps is about the average framerate. All details high except Dynamic Shadows and Light which are on medium and Texture filtering to Low thou. Kinda cheating with the fraps score thou since mines overclocked to 525mhz Core/700mhz Ram. -
I usually keep shadows off on all the games i play. Aslong as i know i can enjoy this game without worrying about slow performance. Ill probably have to reduce some of the settings since mine isnt oc'd. What are your specs anyway bunbuns?
It should be arriving in the mail tommorow. thx for info rep'd -
I don't suppose anyone has tried Dreamfall on an 8400?
