A thread about all sorts of free games for PC that we can recommend to each other. Freeware, shareware, Trials, Mods, Ad supported and so on.
Mods: http://www.moddb.com/ < Great site for what is happening in the world of mods. There are many mods out there that even surpasses the original game due to innovative ideas or long term community improvements. Sometimes the amateurs can improve on the pros work. I suggest taking a look.
Adrian Werner has become a legend in PC gaming. I am proud to say that I have had extensive debates with him on the Gamespot Forums, as well as here where he is known as MadMartigan. Unfortunately he is not very active on these boards anymore.
He is known for his extensive knowledge of games and his vast page "Reasons why it's worth to be a pc gamer" Which he has been updating since 2006. Originally a massive massive Gamespot forum post, and now turned into it's own site. Take a look at his freeware page ( http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/freeware/ ) and his mods page ( http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/mods/ ) As well as the page for upcoming PC games. It's good stuff.

Huxley, the long awaited MMOFPS, is now being hosted by ijji and will be free on PC( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/new...ches-Cross-Platform-Support-Goes-Free-To-Play ) . The game still looks promising, but nowhere near as interesting as it was when we saw it quite a few years ago.
It's supposed to come later this year.

Gunz is one of the most well known free online games of probably all time. The marketing pitch was a Max Payne action style online game, where people can run on walls, while shooting and slicing each other, like an over the top kung fu movie. The game have gotten a large following over the years for what some call "deep" combat. Basically some players learn to master the so called K-Style, which abuses the games animations to win in the game. Some people call it skill, while others think it's lame and just abusing the bugs in the game.
It's not a pretty game, and it's considered to be quite full of hackers. Lag have also been a problem in the past.

If the people at www.mmorpg.com are to be believed, Atlantica is the second-best MMORPG currently on the marked(it's nr. 2 of all released games on their rating system).
What seperates Atlantica from the pack, is that it's a completely true Turn Based RPG... But in an MMORPG.
Some people swear that this has more to do with classic Final Fantasy, than the Final Fantasy MMO, Final Fantasy XI.
It's wildly regarded as one of the best free MMORPGs because it brings something new to the table in a genre full of copies.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xYDcJj4zpw
Maple Story is a very popular free MMORPG, played from a 2D Side scrolling perspective. When it came out it was considered uniqe for it's old school 2D gameplay, boosting charming "Manga graphics". Since then a dozen copies have been released.
The game is immensely popular in many parts of the world.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydLp_p911j8&feature=related
Mabinogi is a very uniqe MMORPG, quite different from the others. This game is more about "living a fantasy life" than the usual combat focused MMORPG that we are used to. Some people consider it, the Harvest Moon of MMOs.
This game has an interesting system with aging characters.

A MMORPG, that boosts itself as a grotesque(sp?) horror MMO with lots of gore and evil. And blood.

Despite the silly name, this frenchie made game is well respected and loved throughout the entire industry. Great art and nice isometric gameplay.

Love it or hate it, Runescape has come a very long way, and is still today on of the strongest MMORPGs in the world. According to Wikipedia it's the worlds most played free MMORPG with 8,5 Million active players and also holds that spot in the Guiness World Records( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RuneScape )
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0lXSP-RpwE&feature=related
When FSW came out on Xbox it was very beautiful and a different kind of military game. I remember thinking it looked alot like Black Hawk Down(the film). It's quite a solid game, and defintely worth your time.

Ryzom had a rough life as a premium Pay-To-Play MMORPG when the game was initially released besides WoW in late 2004. Now, it's free to play but still highly regarded for it's uniqe fantasy world and art. It feels almost like Oddworld. Very bizzarre, but also refreshing from all the elves and orcs.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y89CUYFIlDs&feature=related
The classic that started it all. This game is hard as hell.

Americas Army have had longer running legs than anyone could have imagined. When it was first released, it was uniqe for it's pacing and interesting combination between accesable gameplay, and yet tactical hardcore-ness. It was like a Arcade version of Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. It was a "camper" game, and was about cover, but somehow it felt fast and to the point.
The Army have since it's release(in 2002 I believe!?) updated and kept the game alive. Version 3 was recently released in the summer of 09.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcDV_Hl2DZY
A very fast and hardcore 2D online shooter. Very fun. Has a large cult following. Basically the word on the street is - You play this game, means you are a bad .

A game, and it's sequel that mixes online action with RTS, First Person Shooting, and more. Savage was a very well regarded indie game a few years ago.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1QS7CFu9S8
A game ported from Korean(Dekaron) by the famous Mr. Perry and his friends at Acclaim. This is an action MMO.

SOE's family friendly WoW alternative.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTUVfmE2ViQ&feature=related
It really is no wonder that Mount and Blade, a single player Medieval War fest, is held in so high regard. The game boosts the most convincing and deep Melee Combat I have ever seen. It's an indie game no doubt, but it has gameplay and ideas never seen before. The game has hundreds and hundreds of mods, from Star Wars to Pirates, and any war you can think off.
Later this year a multiplayer expansion will be released.
The basic game is free until lvl 8(I believe). It's well worth the download to try. Very uniqe experience, but hardcore... It can be very unforgiving if you don't know what you are doing.
Massive battles, collecting mercenaries to your cause, capture giant castles, plunder villages for money, upgrade your characters.
It's a very ambitious game, and one that will benefit greatly for it's upcoming multiplayer expansion( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqgjw4EvbHo )

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LVqbwW18WU
Grenado and Sword, are the same game, but under two different names and two different cliens. It's an annoying way to localize a game. It's an interesting MMO, due to it's 16th century spanish-ish world, and the ability to control 3 characters at once and build an entire family. It's like levelling a small army, a bit similiar to The Last Remnant.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb0ZE0KwdD4
A great scary game you should play. This free version is supported by ads. But don't let that stop you. Like a fine 9 dollar wh0re the money you save is worth the ads you see... or something fortune cookie bla bla like that.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twjNXKaGs2s
Fusion Fall, is much like Free Realms, a family and kids friendly WoW-ish MMORPG. Fusion Fall is set in the Cartoon Network universe though, and from what I have heard, both this and Free Realms are supposed to be fun for adults as well. However I wonder if many creepy stalkers are playing this game...

A legendary game of massive scale and size.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzvmxW8xikM
Rise and Fall, was a game that didn't live up to it's potential. It tried to mix action hack'n slash from third person view with normal RTS. It was like taking Warcraft 3's Hero Units to the next level. The game was by no means awful but it sort of bombed in 2006, sales wise.
If you play it, you can see the interesting Action / RTS hybrid.

A physics showcase, this is yet another First Person Shooter.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTdJDStdTss
At least it's not another first person shooter... *faceroll*
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOLqSm9jioU
It would be a lie to say that Area 51 was ever hot sh1t. But the first one was actually a decent shooters that was quite well recieved. It's too bad the new one(not this one) fell so short on it's potential. give this ad supported game a spin!
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSrmDSyFfTA
If you want free World of Warcraft, this is the most close thing you will get. It's so close to WoW, that it's a wonder why Blizzard haven't stopped counting their money to sue these guys. Oh well, lots of people love this game. But it's so horrible close to WoW.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7osculp1RE&feature=related
I don't know much about this, but supposedly it's really good. It looks like a card based MMO.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmOhqsbqs6I
It's FEAR. It's combat. It's a First Person Shooter... For free... Shot guns. You know the drill. This is the same multiplayer that launched with the original FEAR. The slow mo on some servers is pretty cool.

Any FPS in the house? You say YES!

FPS FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV76dKp9YuE
This was what put Bungie on the map. Marathon was the Doom of Macintosh. You can see the Halo references in the game. It's a dark and gloomy space game, yet it boosts some very vibrant colors and saturation that made it stand out from the crowd(Wolfie, Doom and later Quake). These games was hot sh1t back in the day. And actually a decent challenge.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQd6tZXG8pY
This is a free FPS. But don't worry... It has the name of a weinersnitzel. Honestly, do you need more proof that this is worth the download? Look at the bright side.. it can only be a fps or a dirty german p0rno. What else could such a perverse word mean? It just screams foul acts.

Soul of Ultimate Nation ( coming to Ijji )
Big Korean MMORPG coming soon to Ijji. The music is made by Howard Shore, of Lord of the rings fame. It's known among many as "SUN".

A Video of the game I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btxo1rIZUIg
Technically, Guild Wars is not a free game. You have to purchase it, but it's uniqe because of it's lack of monthly fees. You can download a free trial on the GW official website.
The biggest curse of the idea behind the concept of the MMORPG, has always, and WILL always be that they are "never ending". Carrot-on-a-stick gameplay that basically goes on forever. You can even argue the ideology if it's even a game if it's in-win-able! After all, would Chess, be a game if it went on forever?
The great thing about Guild Wars is that there is an end to it. You basically have the possibility of paying for whatever content that you want. Getting left behind in the curve is not something that happens when you choose not to buy the latest expansion or game update.
It's that way in almost any other MMORPG. You are caught and stuck. The fall of monthly fee is that the consumer. The people who are in charge can not vote with their wallets. They can't play the game they love without becoming part of finansing the content that they are forced to pay, regardless of what they feel.
When you buy something in the shop you always have a choice to buy or not to buy. But if I like World of Warcraft for example, but do not like the direction it is going, I can not vouch my opinion through choosing to not buy their latest expansions and updates, but simply either totally stop playing, or live with whatever they decide.
It's said that the MMORPG becomes the Gamers game, after it has been released. In most cases that is a complete and utter lie.
Guild Wars is absolutely fantastic because you can jump in and start playing. It does not bind you. Nobody who lets themselfs become consumed by MMORPGs to follow the train really wins the game. They don't gain anything.
I do believe in the positive aspects of social networking and getting friends online, but the way that "some" Hardcore MMORPG gamers establish their reasoning for spending SOO much time on a product, is being in denial.
While I personally have had experience with MMORPGs for around 10 years now, I have never been "addicted" in the sense that the press feeds on a daily basis. I do believe that some people are truly addicted, like you can be addicted to gambling or sniffing ladies underwear, but I also believe that many people use this as a scapegoat.
Saying that you are just addicted and just accepting it, is just another way of dropping all your responsibilities and blaming something exterior(the game). It might as well be being addicted to a DVD boxset of "Days of Our Lives" or "Wheel of fortune". It's being misused.
But upsets me is that my playstyle is that I love MMORPGs. Making a character and exploring a world, but the tenacious grind that follows is always a problem. -
Some more of the big Korean ones. We can only assume that these are going to be free, but there is no safety on that. It depends on who picks it up. It might go F2P(like SUN) or it might go P2P(like Aion). For now we can suspect that there is a possibility that these major Korean MMOs could come over here and become big hits.
All four of them have in common that they have a big emphasis on real combat, and not slow auto-attack combat. Particularly C9 and Mabinogi Heroes looks more like old school fighting games, or similiar to Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, than Action RPGs.

Over-saturation of MMOs and FPS games. Nothing really wrong with that though.
I can't believe Huxely went down the rabbit hole. It was so hyped up three years back.
Taking a look at Blackshot and Warmonger. -
Definetly worthy of a +1 Rep from me as well!

Huxley development actually stopped. Wakfu was also in troubles.
Korea is a powerhouse in online gaming. Perhaps only second to Tae-Kwon-Do, Online gaming is probably their national sport(south korea of course). -

I don't really remember anything about SUN.
It just strikes me odd that Huxely, the game I first heard about in EGM (of all places!) disappeared and ended up like this. Obviously we won't be seeing the cross-platform action of Shadowrun, but at least we get the game for free
Let's hope it's a quality title. -
Aw man, this deserves +5 lol. Really well presented, great work

Here's my contribution for a bunch of games from a cool little site I found:
Instant Action is a site that hosts a bunch of free browser based games. These are pretty fleshed out mostly 3D games, not just another flash games site. The site has an integrated community that is shared with all their games and the fact that all the games are browser based really streamlines the experience. There are some things you can buy with microtransactions, and commercials that play between matches.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVsemgxoHxA
Fallen Empire: Legions is a pretty straightforward shooter. What makes it special is that it has a boosting and jetpack mechanic to make the action more fast paced. However, the action pretty much boils down to twitchy bunny hopping and rocket launcher spam, with the occasional sniper. It has a third person view for close range fights so you can actually tell what the hell is going on around you, and a first person view for long range fighting. Game modes are limited to CTF, Team Deathmatch, and Deathmatch.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQPcd2afsmE
Ace of Aces is a pretty simple dogfighting game. Set in the WWI era, using biplanes with machineguns. And that's about all there is to say about it. Gameplay is basically deathmatch in wide open spaces where the terrain doesn't really come into play except to provide a barrier to hit if you go too low.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyImhGZM0WM (an older version of the game)
Galcon is a space combat RTS. There are planets, planets make ships, ships capture planets. You attack by selecting one or more planets, adjusting what percentage of your ships you want to send out, and then clicking on another planet to send your ships there. When your ships reach an enemy planet, the enemy ships and your ships die on a 1 for 1 basis until one side is wiped out and if it was the defending side than the winner captures the planet. Once a ship leaves a planet, you cannot control it until it reaches it's destination. You can play with teams or individually, but what color a player is does not actually relate to their team. For example, the light purple player can be on the blue team and the purple player can be on the green team, making it kind of confusing trying to figure out who exactly controls each of the many planets and whose team they are on.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iiJQ6PLTiI
Lore: Aftermath is a mech combat game. Like the mechwarrior games you can have all sorts of weapon combinations and you can assign them to fire in sync and stuff, and you have to take weight and overheating into consideration and things like that. It also has things like jumpjets, mines, deployable turrets, countermeasures, etc.... I find this to be a much more satisfying shooter than the previously mentioned jetpack bunny-hopping one.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19hkEaaqFSQ
Zap is basically multiplayer asteroids/geometry wars. You play a little triangle ship with a turret on it with an assortment of weapon and special ability options, and play CTF (and other gametypes nobody actually plays) against bots and other players. There are some interesting little features on the maps like turrets, teleporters, shield doors, and of course, asteroids.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLsxv4rfMN8
Marble Blast Online is a ball platformer. There are two kinds of levels: Time trial, where you have to make it through a series of checkpoints and get to the end of the level as fast as possible without falling off. And gem collecting, where you compete with other players and try to collect as many gems scattered around the map as possible and knock the other players off into the abyss to delay them. There are some really well designed levels with all kinds of obstacles and the gameplay is mixed up a bit with powerup items and the ability to do jumping and blasting moves.

Rokkitball is a sport played with low gravity, rocket launchers, and magnetic guns (IE gravity guns). The object of the game is simple, get the ball in the other teams goal. You can't kill other players but you can disrupt them by hitting them with rockets or you can just use rockets to move the ball. The magnetic gun pulls in the ball and tethers it to you, and can be used to launch the ball into the air to pass or score.

Think tanks is a cute little tank combat game. Your tank fires little volleys of bullets instead of big cannon shots, and while the turret does turn independently, your view is stuck facing the direction the tank is facing and you can't turn the turret more than the edge of your view. There are a few different tank types, and powerups and stuff to mix things up, but it is a very simple game and I didn't really find it interesting.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
This ones an ijji game I used to play.

Drift City is a cell shaded racing MMO. It has a very large assortment of cars and modifications you can make to those cars and special items and stuff. Loot and exp can be earned just by driving around and doing stunts, but the actual missions are usually some form of go from point A to point B and/or C,D,E, etc..., or trying to ram a bunch of enemy cars until they explode. You can also play pvp and spend most of your time racing against other players. There are also raid boss type enemies that appear once every 3 hours I believe and basically it's a giant tank or something similar that has some gimmick like shooting you or laying oil slicks and it takes about 50 people 10 minutes of ramming it to take it down. Most of the game is just driving though.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Download at: http://source.bungie.org/get/
Marathon is a series of shooters done by Bungie, the first game came out way back in 1994 and was the mac rival to doom. It's gameplay will definitely remind you of the old doom games if you have played those but it has a more sophisticated engine and a far more sophisticated story. At the download link I gave you you can also pick up some user generated content like additional campaigns and graphical improvements. You might even be able to get some online or network multiplayer going and try out all the cool gametypes they have like "kill the man with the ball", the predecessor to Halo's oddball. The trailer I linked is actually from the xbox live arcade version of Marathon 2, which is also awesome, but not free.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
if your into PvP, Cabal(mmorpg) is a great choice. Its a grind fest for sure to lvl your skills but once you hit Trans, PvP matchs are amazing not only to watch but to be in. great thread btw.

Come on guys, someone made yet another redundant free games thread and still this one doesn't even get bumped?

Flash Minesweeper: MP doesn't need a whole lot of explanation. It's minesweeper, in a browser, with online coop. Can get a little hectic with lots of players, but it sure is a blast. If one person sets off a mine they get a respawn timer and the time goes up if they keep setting off mines often, so one bad/jerk player can't totally ruin the game. There's definitely a sense of accomplishment when your team finally gets a map cleared with no stupid mistakes and then there's that one last spot where it's impossible to tell which is the mine and nobody wants to be the one to guess but you go for it and snag the win!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

I would like to see this become a sticky.

As you guys probably know, there is another Free Games thread that just started. If somebody wants to step up and create/maintain a thread that combines the games from both of the threads so there is just one, send me a PM.
Thanks for understanding. -
I would love to, I just have not had the time to do proper upkeep.

I made a mistake with this thread by hosting the pictures on photobucket... if too many people see them, they become disabled...
I think we should make a new and more proper thread later, categorised after how performance demanding they are. Splitting it up into a Netbook Section, a laptop section with people with IGPUs and so on and so forth.. then we can really make a cool guide. This was just a quick thread.
When I get more time I would love to do something really cool, gaming related thread stuff. Not this mess:-D -

I've been trying to play every game that you've posted, so far it's all been really good.
Keep 'em comming -
So what news lately?
Portal has been free for the last week. If you haven't already gotten it, now is the last chance. The free-give away for anyone, Mac or PC version of Portal ends today. Open Steam, to find out more.
Dungeons and Dragons Online, has since it went Free 2 Play become the third biggest MMORPG in the west. Very impressive. Give the game a try, many people are enjoying it.
Vindictus website has launched. Be ready for beta testing this soon: Vindictus
They claim that they will redefine free2play with this title. The combat, does look insane at least.
Global Agenda, has gotten an unlimited trial, meaning you get the full game, but you cant level past lvl 15, but you can still play forever, but you will just not be able to advance past lvl 15.
This game is actually lots of fun. Its like a mix between Tribes, team fortress 2, guild wars, counter-strike and planetside: http://www.globalagendagame.com/freetrial/
You really should play this. Its worth your time, and by the time you get to lvl 15 (it will take a long time, you will know if its for you). The game got some decent reviews, but is already having lots of improvements and updates.
Age of Conan: Welcome to the unlimited trial in the most savage world ever
Warhammer Online: Mythic Entertainment | Warhammer Online ? Play the ENDLESS FREE trial!
Two of the biggest MMORPGs, now also has unlimited trials. you can download the entire game for free, and play for free until a certain level, but cant advance further than said level. It's a nice demo, that doesnt run out. Try it. Particularly, Age of Conan has went from horrible dissapointment, to a great, great game. -

Seriously?
-
Vindictus
A Free to Play MMORPG to consider. Looks interesting enough to me.
Vindictus - Based on Celtic mythology
- It's focus is on action, since it's Celtic, expect slashing. Not WoW action with annoying paladin skills. This is the focal point of the game, the action.
- ALL MOVEMENTS, E-MOTES or ACTION ARE DONE BY MOTION CAPTIONING.
- Source Engine. They felt this was an engine capable of details while being efficient. So they seem to have some type of relationship with Valve
- They view players who pay nothing as valuable. If you are a good player, you are attractive to other players to join and play. You are still an asset if you don't pay. So you will not be shafted for not paying.
- The fighting will be more realistic. So if you have shield, your character will take the force on the shield. Your character may have to go down on one knee to brace itself or to stop itself from being flown backwards.
And this is a game that is not going through Korea, then China, then Japan, then Taiwan. No it's coming to the USA directly.
