I just ordered my ThinkPad T60p with 2GB RAM. (Yes, not a gaming rig, but I wanted something decently portable...)
I know if I don't buy them now, I won't buy them in the future.
Moreover, I have been out of gaming since Baldur's Gate II & Civilization III.
What are the top games I need in each of the categories:
1. Role Playing
2. Strategy
3. First Person Shooter
4. Mystery/Puzzle/Immersive game à la Myst
5. Plane/Racing game
-
1. Oblivion
2. Dunno
3. Half Life 2
4. Dunno
5. Trackmania Nations (google it, its free). -
HL2
HL2
HL2
HL2
MotoGP -
1. WoW
2. Warcraft 3 frozen throne
3. FEAR
4. still Myst
5. NFS most wanted -
If you liked civilization 3, civilization 4 is a much polished game overall.
-
Role Playing:
Oblivion, Morrowind, Star Wars KOTOR1&2, Neverwinter Nights, World of WarCraft
Strategy:
STARCRAFT!!! (Everyone needs StarCraft), Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and Winter Assault, WarCraft III, Civilization series
First Person Shooters:
Fear, HalfLife 2, Doom 3, Command and Conquor Renegade (Still love that one)
Puzzle/Mystery
Myst (nothing else matters)
Flight sim
X-Wing/Tie Fighter series (Nothing is as good as them) Independence War and its sequels come in pretty good too. And Wing Commander is another good old one. -
1. Diablo II (2002) - had me addicted for 2 years, no other game has managed this
2. Age of Empires series - legendary
3. Half Life series - anyone can tell you how great this series is
4. Grim Fandango (1998) - 1998 Overall GotY, even beating Zelda The Ocarina of Time. I hate puzzle/mystery games, but this one is so well made even I loved it (not as much as Zelda mind you).
5. no comment - I hated everyone I've played so far
Your machine should be able to play all those games on max or higher settings (perhaps not the newer titles in Age of Empires and Half Life), so you can enjoy those amazing titles at their best. -
1) Guild Wars
2) Warcraft III Frozen Throne
3) Call of Duty/ Brotherhood in Arm: Road to Hill 30
4) Prince of Persia series
5) Need for Speed Underground -
1. Role Playing:
I can't really say, as I don't play many RPGs, but I hear Oblivion is very good.
2. Strategy:
There haven't been any really good RTS games recently, IMO, but BFME2 is passable and AoE III has its moments, and all the old C&C games are still a blast. For turn-based, you can't beat Civ4.
3. First Person Shooter:
F.E.A.R., HL2, Painkiller, Far Cry, CoD2, Condemned, UT2004, and, if you haven't played it, Halo are all great fun (and UT2004 and Halo are LAN party staples, so you'd better have them now that you have a laptop). This really is a good time for FPS games, and all of these should run well (except maybe F.E.A.R. and Condemned, those are insane) on your machine. I recommend against even trying Doom 3 or Quake 4, they won't be good experiences on an ATi card (not that they're great games to begin with).
4. Mystery/Puzzle/Immersive game à la Myst:
This...it's not such a good time for. There hasn't been anything good that didn't carry the Myst label really since Zork: Grand Inquisitor.
5. Plane/Racing game:
Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a lot of fun and should run beautifully on your system. Not really sure where else to put it, but the GTA games (Vice City and San Andreas, especially) are a blast too, and run glass smooth even on my x200M. -
1. Role Playing
Baldurs Gate 2. Nothing i have played compares to that beast! Also, Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale 2 are worth looking into.
2. Strategy
The Command and Conquer / Age of Empires series still rule.
3. First Person Shooter
The last one i bought was Quake 4, but for a slower system it wont be so good. Look into Serious Sam, thats soo much fun!
4. Mystery/Puzzle/Immersive game à la Myst
5. Plane/Racing game
Not really played these games.
