So my friend was looking at a laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and I am not sure if what I've been reading is true but are all of these 300s just renamed 200s? No one seems to be enjoying their presence so are they really nothing new? I told him to look for something with ATI because from what I see they are doing a lot better than Nvidia with the mobile market.

You did the right thing! Almost all nVIDIA 3XX Mobile cards are renamed 2XX cards with slightly higher clock speed. :D

Depending on the price range, yes, ATI may be the better option right now. The 300s seem to be the cheaper alternative for the up and coming laptop gaming market.

Ati is way the better option right now and in my opinion will remain so until Nvidia starts releasing its mobile Fermi cards which is easily a years wait. A 330m should perform in par with a GT240m. And this assumption I'm basing on the 335 from the New AlienWare M11x, which is supposed to be between GT 240m and GTS 250m. If you stick a 330 in a 11 inch form factor that's kinda cool, but by itself its bucket of redone FAIL. Ati, all the way...for now...

Well let's not be hasty - just because it's ATI doesn't mean it's better than an Nvidia card. A more powerful card is still a more powerful card, even if it's based on 3-year-old architectures.

But yes, generally speaking ATI will give better bang-for-the-buck performance at the moment, and that goes double for the new generation of cards (300m vs. HD5000).
