I think the great game is the game that has some points of innovation and had something caught you mind such as story, game play, sound. Most FPS games are just bland games that have new place, map, story and have too many. I had thought that PCs and XBox are FPS machine. There is a few modern games that I satisfied to play to the end and impressed. Here is a list from my experience.

    - Baldur's gate 1-2 (RPG) - Deep game play, deep customization, very non linear story, also have very good story too.
    - Fallout 1-2 (RPG) - Have a good dark theme story that Fallout 3 never have, innovative turn-base strategy gameplay.
    - Civilization series (Turn base strategy) - Scale the world conflict down to PC game. Very addictive after learn it, make me feel conquering the world is fun
    - Stratcraft (Real time strategy) - Fast pace game that balance of three is better than 2 or 4 and more. IMO, there is no real time strategy game better than this game until now.

    ... to be continued later.

Well in that case you should take out Left 4 Dead since everyone knows about it, and I think in one of your posts you said that WOW wouldn't be known if it wasn't for the community which can be said about any online game. If it wasn't for online play no one would play L4D, if no one communicated in that game then no one would play it. In my opinion a majority of people play certain games because that is what there friends are playing. I have never played WOW but I don't understand why you would exclude a certain genre because it has very well known games.

Hey OP, how could you forget the Age of Empires series? This has probably already been said before, but Age of Empires 2 was absolutely groundbreaking when it came out and it's still widely played today.

I think for turn based strategy games a Heroes of Might and Magic should be listed. I have played the 5th incarnation which some people say it is the 3D version of HoMM III.

I'm going to nominate Overlord/Overlord 2 - very fun game, nice to play the evil lord taking over the world instead of the fluffy pink defender who saves it.

Another one will be the Sims franchise. Especially loved Sims 1 & 2. Have to get my hands on TS3 sooner or later...

I'd be shocked if Borderlands didn't make it on this list by next week. Seriously, this isn't some bs - this game is fun.

    No XCOM? Dude?

    No Harpoon?

Where are Panzer General and the Steel Panthers series in turn-based strategy?

List of sims is lacking many games. From the top of my head, The Jane´s sims (Longbow II, 688, WWII fighters, Strike Fighters), F19 Stealth Fighter, A10 Cuba, Silent Hunter.

The MMO flight sims Warbirds and Aces High.

I see only racing games. Where are the racing sims?

A space shooter list without any game from the X-wing series?
