How do you have a beta for a game released in 2007?

A month ago I signed up on their website for the beta, and last week I finally received the invite. I was so excited until I saw the download size: about 10GB, and it was going to take 140hrs to download using their P2P client.

So I gave up. I guess I will just have to wait for the final release.

The beta is for testing the new landmass being added, scalable instances and the transition to Free to Play (F2P). It's a big change!

A common misconception with LoTRO is that it launched with the entire Middle Earth map, from the Grey Havens right through to Mordor. This is not the case. The game is already vast, but at present we're up to Moria, Lothlorien and Mirkwood. The landmass included in the beta is bridging the space between Eregion and Isengard, the latter of which will be the area of the next full expansion.

Surely to get all the lands that exist in this world into the game, the game itself would have to be VAST beyond insanity

Well it's not an exact replica to date that's for sure ;)

They're not filling in the entire world of Middle Earth, at least at present. Mirkwood as it currently stands for example is only the very Southern End of Mirkwood Forest, leaving out Dale and Erebor. Whether we make it as far NE as The Iron Hills or as far East as the Sea of Rhun is anyones guess. I mentioned the Grey Havens too beforehand, that's another area not in the game... yet.

Turbine's license specifically pertains to the Lord of the Rings novel, as opposed to The Hobbit or the movies, so there's little action story wise in those spots I mention above. I know alot of players would love to see them fleshed out over time however, myself included.

Man, I remember playing the pre-release beta of this game years ago. It's nice to get back into it.

I played for awhile and stopped. If I come back again, load the game off the old DVD will I be able to transition my old account to F2P easy?

I liked it. Granted, I didn't get very far, but gameplay is basically what you would expect from an MMO. Excellent graphics, too, especially for its time. It has DX10 features now as well.

Well this is exciting then, I need something to tide me over until Dragon Age 2, this could be it. It was rated very well from what I have seen.

My question would be about their item shop when it goes F2P; will certain item $hop items be required to play the game? I enjoyed Perfect World until I entered my first dungeon instance and discovered item $hop potions were essentially "required". I am hoping that LOTRO will allow you to have a full experience when taking the free road.

    What is the LOTRO Store?

The LOTRO Store is a new feature introduced with LOTRO Free-to-Play. It is seamlessly integrated into the game and can be accessed at any time directly from the game interface. The Store offers a wide selection of consumables like health potions and other convenience items such as additional storage slots, concierge services such as extra character slots or premium classes, cosmetic items such as clothing and emotes, and premium content such as expansions to the game. The LOTRO Store has more than 2,500 items! These items can be obtained in exchange for Turbine Points, which can be purchased in the Store or earned through gameplay.

Will I still be able to play and enjoy the game without buying items from the LOTRO Store, or is that my only option for gaining weapons, armor, potions, and other goodies such as premium loot?

The purchase of items in the LOTRO Store is entirely optional. While items in the Store are designed to immediately enhance your in-game experience, premium loot and rare gear are the rewards of adventure and are only obtainable through gameplay.

    Taken directly from lotro.com.

There's been a ton of content added since the original Shadows of Angmar was released so you'd probably be best to download the full version when it becomes available. You could save a little time and buy the Mines of Moria pack which should include everything up to, and including Moria. That should be pretty cheap these days, and should include probably 80% of what you'd need to download... up to you I guess.

If you've ever had an account previously tho, your transition to F2P will be very easy.

No. The store is purely for convenience. In terms of what purely F2P players will be able to do, this article probably sums it up best - Lord of the Rings Online : Free to Play Interview - Lord of the Rings Online for PC at MMORPG.COM

The character creation menu actually has videos and detailed descriptions of each class and what they do, and even has a rough estimate of how difficult the class is. You may find that quite handy; I know I sure did.
