I suppose there could be a case where a lower model next gen card performs better than a high end previous gen card. The GeForce FX comes to mind, as I bet a 6600 could likely vastly outperform even the 5900 in certain DX9 software. The 6 to 7 series and xx00 to x1x00 series wasn't much of a jump in technololgy.

I can see this occuring again when dx10 arrives.

I wouldn't suggest a sticky since it would clutter up the forum with loads of usefull stickies. But perhaps the mods should create a single sticky containing all info from stickies, including this one :)

i think the first bit is just a roman numeral (ie x stands for 10)

ie for the *800 series -

    9800 (9th generation)

    x800 (10th generation)

    x1800 (11th generation

well, loosely based on roman numerals anyway since it should really be xi800..

Unfortunately, your system falls apart with ATI hardware.

The X1400 is faster than the X600; likewise, the X1600 is faster than the X700.

Ok.... Where did the info on the notebook GPU numbering system go?

People are asking about this card or that card , I've been linking to this thread... and now it's gone.
