I say, wow. Truly.
EDIT:
I really liked this. I am baffled by some of the comments(ziddy!).
1) CGI trailers don't suck at all. They take a lot of skills to make well. I have only seen two other MMO Cinematics that have been up to this standard. One of them is WoW, the other is Warhammer(incredible launch cinematic).
2) It's a marketing tool. But what did you expect? It's also to get people excited, and introduce people to the action, the lore and the mythology that they love. It's fan service, it's a commercial. What is wrong with that? I find them highly entertaining, and I see them multiple times. I enjoy the quality, and the little stories. They are small exciting action short movies.
3) They are not a representation of the actual game. I think this goes without saying, and I am sure that EA/LA/Bioware are not that stupid to believe, that people will believe it's end game.
4)This game takes place, 3500 years before the Star Wars Episode 1. It takes place around 400-500 years after the first knights of the old republic game. In this timeline, Jedis and Sith are sprawling throughout the galaxy. There are many thousands. The Jedis are the police enforcers that patrol the galaxy, fighting for the republic. The Sith are the enemy faction, lead by both Dark Jedi(sith warriors) and other non force users that share their goals.

CGI trailers suck.
I really don't like them, they are never a demonstration or indication of what the game will be.
Trooper can withstand being shocked, and then detonate a grenade on himself. Dumb dumb and dumber. I guess in this weird Star Wars from Bioware to balance combat, troopers they will be the unstoppable terminators. -
Anyone else think Hadoken towards the end of that?
-
Yeah, made me think I guess Jedi in Bioware's version of Star Wars, they are DBZ mofos screaming over 9000.
-
I enjoy CGI trailers. They build hype and story. Exactly what they are supposed to do. The first one was outstanding so I'll be checking this out when I get home.
Thanks for posting about this.
I ignore everything ziddy123 says.
-
Now I know that Star Wars is based on our world, thanks for clearing that up Ziddy
Seriously though, besides it not being actual gameplay, it was a good trailer (I hesitate to call it a trailer, to be honest). -
Yeah, but that doesn't stop the hordes of people from buying the game anyway. The WoTLK expansion is a great example of this. CGI trailers are nothing more but marketing fodder, pure and simple.
-
The ingame graphics (With combat) dont look so awesome, so of course they need to do a CGI teaser. xD
But does this mean troopers can run around doing suicide with grenades and survive?
Bet that will make the game unbalanced. hehe -
i actually disagree with you for once ziddy.. i actually think they're quite good and this one was however unrealistic.

Thread Hijack! Just couldn't resist to put this up, big star wars fan
Star Wars Force Unleashed II E3 2K10 Trailer -
what the hell was that move when she stopped the lightsaber with her hands? are you kidding me...ridiculous.
-
Cool to watch, but doesn't give us any idea about the game.
And stopping the lightsaber with her hand? Why didn't luke think of something so simple... -
Old Republic Jedi were the best!
Luke was also only like level 6, while she's like a level 16 so she's got more mana.
-
That was pretty bad a$$.

I find it funny how people complain about stuff always being imbalanced, but this time, people are complaining about it being TOO balanced. Comon, if it was actually like the real Star Wars, who the heck would want to be a stupid trooper? "Hey! I'm level 84 with an ubergun, and there's that level 23 Jedi with his lightsaber! Oh no! Everything gets deflected, oh no, now I'm dead. *sadface*"
If it was like the real Star Wars, it would be the most terrible MMO in history. People would only play as one class, and the 2 people who dare to play as troopers will give up after level 3. -

They should just get rid of the trooper class. Who would want to play as a trooper anyway? They're the cannon fodder.
-
I would, just to be unique. Everybody and their dog and their dog's fleas will a a Jedi or a Sith.
-
I would, just to be different.
-
lol did she just stop a lightsaber with her hand?!?!?!?
Is this also during the clone wars? Yikes, besides the next incarnation of Halo, I can't think of game I would want less.
That's what I want to see. Can't wait for this. -
Yeah the whole hand stopping lightsaber thing was rather awkward.
TFU 2 should be good, I didn't think they could make a sequel...I thought he died. :/ -
there has to be balance but when stuff is added that doesnt belong in star wars you get farther away from it feeling authentic...
-
I didn't think so either, but it looks like it has been explained in the trailer. Darth Vader cloned Star Killer, several times. Could be interesting, anyway, I can't wait to see it. XD
-
That wasn't a move. Her outfit (or at least the palms) appear to have been made from Cortosis, which can resist lightsabers.
Yes, I know far too much about this. -
Unfortunately, all of this talk about absorbing lightsaber energy through the hand forces me to bring out some of the inner Star Wars nerd in me (no pun intended). In some of the later books, a Corellian Jedi named Corran Horn is able to utilize such a technique to absorb energy, albeit at some damage to himself. Still, this damage is noticeable lesser than it would be without the technique. As I recall, he used this technique on himself during the Yuuzhan Vong era to channel energy into himself and defeat a powerful warrior.
The technique is commonly referred to as "Force Absorb". -
You're right about the troopers, but I find that all of the different "classes" or achetypes in Star Wars (the movies anyway) are equally powerful and contribute just as much as the other to the overall storyline. For example, I think Boba Fett or Han Solo are balanced with Jedis and Sith, even if they possess different skills.
-
burrrrned!
-
i was rather impressed with the CGI trailer, i agree with the Op...wow....that defiantly gets the blood pumping....im alive...ALIVE......
-
No!! I want to be Boba Fett!!
-
None of us can be Boba Fett, sadly Chaz will end our lives if it were so...
-
Hahaha, ok then Jango Fett or the next in the cool bounty hunter line...

'Balance' shouldn't only be about combat. If all classes were all balanced in terms of their ability to fight, despite having different skills, that would be boring. Of course there'd still be strategy involved, but a 'game universe' shouldn't be all about fighting. Each character should have a different approach to the game (not just melee vs ranged, physical vs magic, etc).
One of the things that interests me about FF14 more is the uncommon variety of classes. Botanist, Fisher, Carpenter, Weaver, Culinarian... I'm curious how these classes will turn out. -
I highly doubt those are classes. Those are more likely professions just like herbalism in World of Warcraft = Botanist.
Never played a MMORPG before? This is common in almost any of the recent MMORGPs.
The classes in FF XIV are the same as any other fantasy MMORPG. Doesn't matter than Square Enix decided for whatever stupid reason they came up with, they included the crafting professions as classes. They aren't classes. All it means that whatever item/weapon your character equips it will become that class/profession. -
In the Star Wars Universe not everyone gets the option to roll up a Jedi by paying a monthly subscription.
Balancing a Jedi class should be done by making it the hardest class to play well. Don't make laser parries an automatic/passive ability and watch how many people whine that the class "sucks" and reroll as an easy to play trooper.
Choosing to be a Jedi in a game shouldn't make the player the Chosen One. -
Yeah, that was also a problem in SWG.
Everyone wanted SWG to be rare and impossible, but extremely powerful. Yet everyone seeked it. They wanted to be the rare jedi/sith, and everyone else to be ordinary low lifes.
It's like asking everyone to be side characters while I can be the main character.
People watch the films and they think that all jedis are as strong as the ones in the film. Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan, Yoda and all the others are supposed to be legendary and incredible strong and skilled.
People are not going to like it, when they get owned by a trooper with a knife running away from them, in a mouse and cat scenario. -
Since I unlocked on my 5th profession I had the rare Jedi in hiding experience. At 4444 Guardian we were Powerful like the movies. The extreme power of rolling a 35 man guild 1 vs 35 when I was a Dark Jedi Guardian. I was able to do this once I finished the constant leveling alone in places like the backcountry of endor. There was nothing easy about being a Jedi pre Patch 9. It took skill and understanding to be able to fight and win. Force power costs and pools were really bad for a Dark Jedi. People were out looking for you and death was brutal. Believe me I lost a months worth of experience at one point.
SWTOR will be a different Jedi experience. I welcome it since everyone wants to be a Jedi but don't expect a knife to ever be as awesome as a lightsaber. The ability to move things with your mind makes you a deadly adversary and the idea that an average bounty hunter has any business fighting an average jedi seems absurd to me. Sure if he gets the drop on the Jedi that goes without saying. When a Jedi is tuned to the force they sense danger. A clone ordered to fire at a Jedi gives no warning since the clone isn't going after them out of malice. A brilliant strategy by the Emperor.
Of course I have known power.
I already had the Jedi Experience. Swtor should be an interesting comparison and a much better story. Perhaps it will fill everyone's desire for a taste of the Jedi life. We will see. -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
George, listen to me!
Make me a movie as good as that trailer and I won't hate you for Episodes 1,2 and 3!
-
No, I think they the O.R troopers just look similar to their Clone Wars/Trilogy counterparts, just because their suits don't change much aesthetically. Kinda like how those droids in the trailer look a lot like Destroyer droids from Episodes 1-3.
-
This. This is what The Clone Wars should have been.
I think that the trailer was awesome! The WAR trailer was wicked awesome, and was one of the reasons I played the game as long as I did (that and the fact I play actual warhammer...infact I'm posting this while im in my warhammer 25th anniversary t-shirt
)
As for the issue of balance, I watched a video about combat in the game, and as they were trying to make the action cinematic, instead of a sit and slash situation, it seemed they addressed balance quite well.

I think SWTOR is more like WoW.
In WoW, the NPCs think that any player character is an epic hero in the making. The games characters refers to the player character as the chosen one, basically.
In SWTOR I think it will sort of the same. You don't play an average Bounty Hunter, Trooper or Smuggler. No, you play someone with the same level of skill and legendary status as Boba Fett, or Han Solo! But then again.. The Jedis are epic galactic heroes too, but apparently still from the force defining Master powers of Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker.
My SWG life was very different. Master Teras Kasi / Master Creature Handler, I explored the world, and saw what Holocron grinding did to the social structure of the game. It already got killed here for the social classes! -
I think there are many ways to make the balance. One starting point could be to realize the Jedi/Sith essentially has NO armor whatsoever, so while deflecting some shots feels nice they have to act quickly.
