Some weeks back I decided to buy The Witcher. Having played all three Fallouts, I wanted an RPG game. And this is my mini review of it.
Box Contents: Before even talking about the game it self I must say what the game box it self brings.
- 2 discs for the installation.
- 1 disc with the soundtracks of the game.
- 1 disc of behind the scenes of The Witcher.
- 1 disc with music that inspired the soundtracks.
- 2 booklets:
- The game guide which will answer any questions you might have during the game
- Since this game is inspired from mainly 1 book, but also a collection of others from the same author, they gave you a small booklet that read the most important parts of the book: "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski
- 1 map of the "world" you are playing in.
- 1 book of magic spells and a steel sword....
Nah I'm kidding.
As you can see they give you a lot of extra nice bonuses. Nothing compared to almost all games today that give you the game, installation guide and perhaps if you are lucky a small booklet giving you tips. And as a bonus a recent patch eliminated the DRM completely of the game.
Now to the game, you play as Geralt, a witcher. What is a witcher you may ask? Well a witcher is a mutated human that has superhuman abilities. Such as them being able to use ¨Sings¨ which are powers such as being able to use a telekinetic push, or a circle of fire. Also you can consume potions which are lethal to normal humans, but because of the mutations witchers only get a small intoxication. These potions will temporarily will make Geralt much tougher depending on the potion.
Graphics: The game it self it is very pleasing to the eye.
Game play: The most important part of the game will be your choices. Keep in mind this is not your normal RPG, like Fallout or Mass Effect. There is no evil or good choices. Just choices and their consequences. Throughout the game you will have some flash backs, which will represent some of your choices you have made.
In the game you will find racism, hatred, prostitutes, plenty of digital boobs and se,x (and I mean plenty), cursing, drugs, so the game it self is pretty mature.
The speech of the characters is good though not perfect.
The story line is solid, entertaining, and engaging.
Upgrade System: I look at the upgrade system as a positive and a negative at the same time. I like it because they force you to pretty much have a balanced character while still having a tiny amount of freedom.
It is a negative because I'm used to say in Fallout/Mass Effect if you want to make your shooting or speaking skills top notch first and for most, you can go ahead and do it. But here you kind of have to have a well rounded player. Thus you can't really play say a really heavy sided melee guy or a heavy sided magician side. But in the end it is not so bad.
Combat: It will take a bit of time to adjust to the game, but they give you enough time to adjust.
I personally liked the combat style they made, it is not a click fest trying to kill your adversary. On the contrary you have to be alert to click at the right times. On hard it is almost guaranteed that you will die many many times if you don't combine spells, potions, and good sword tactics.
One thing that I like about this game is that you can get surrounded and pretty much is very easy to die this way, compared to say Assasin's Creed which you where surrounded while fighting, but in reality you were really fighting 1 person at a time, here you fight the bunch at the same time. This makes the game more challenging and thus more fun.
Summary: The game has about 90 hours of game play so you will be entertained for quite some time. There are three mayor ways to finish the game. I have done two play throughs already, though I won't go for a third.
I wont say much more so you can go out and buy the game and experience it for your self. I recommend you buy the actual box for the nice bonuses you get. In total the game I will rate it a 9.5 out of 10. Though not perfect the game it has to be played.
