In the times when I gamed actively, CS1.6 was king. Then came half life 2 and CS source. However, I've been out of the whole online fps thing for quite a while, and now there are miriads of fps games with multiplayer... So which one is the best? The ones I've heard the most of are BFBC2, and MW2...

p.s.: also, what are the major differences between online fps games nowadays anyway? They all seem to have an upgrades system, a set amount of different classes, and game modes such as deathmatch and capture the flag... Are they all just clones of each other, or is there some noticable difference?

Counter Strike is still HUGE. According to Steam Stats, it has quite a bit more players than all the other FPS's you listed. BFBC2 and MW2 are approaching their end of life as both developers are releasing their newer titles: Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Medal of Honor this/next month. Also, don't forget about Team Fortress 2, it's a slightly different style but is still a strong FPS.

hehe, yeah I still like cs 1.6 most somehow... I'm just so used to the physics in that game, even playing source feels... different to me somehow..

All the big games are turning into EA sports yearly releases, so the communities are split massively

even among call of duty, there are still a TON of people playing CoD4. A decent number of people are playing v5 (world at war), most people are playing v6 (modern warfare 2), and v7 is about to come out. And all that is just within one franchise.

Medal of Honor is a clone franchise of Call of Duty, it doesn't bring much new to the table. Literally same mechanic, just not as polished. That splits up people more.

Battlefield BC2 is at least its own game, it's different than CoD/CoD clones, and I think you will just be disappointed with CS:S, although a lot of people play.

there really isn't any game to pick that is the king... it's all a bunch of little city-states now.

that irks me! So basically from now on its just the same game being released every year? :/

And incidentally wasnt MoH released before Call of Duty? Thats how I remembered it... But maybe I'm wrong :)

I think you are right, I think CoD was a MoH clone... also, Activision fired the original developers of the CoD franchise so I CoD: Black Ops may lack the original luster

Honestly, you should give Team Fortress 2 a try next time it goes on sale. You should get it for less than $10 and its much less risky than blowing $90+ on MW2.

For a different style FPS game you might try Left 4 Dead 1 and/or 2. I just got it a few days ago, so i don't know everything that is going on, but the basics...

Its a squad of survivors vs zombies (ai horde, and player controlled special zombies).

The survivors goal is to move from one safe house to another eventually being rescued to end the campaign. The zombies are trying to stop that. Zombies die a lot and the player controlled special zombies respawn after 20 seconds or so.

Survivors are tough and instead of dieing a lot they are usually incapacitated and can be revived by another survivor to rejoin the push to the next safe-house. Zombies win when they kill or incapacitate all survivors. Survivors win if one of them makes it to the safe house.

I'd say battlefield 2 (not bf:bc2) is great fps, there's a lot more teamwork, maps are huge, a lot more vehicles, lots of mods, and it's cheap as hell with all expansion packs now for free.

BC2 is the next one after that for me, it's the second fps after bf2 that involves some kind of cooperation in squads, some kind of brains and there's gonna be upcoming expansion (bc2 vietnam) at the end of the year, so it's defeniatelly not at it's end as someone mentioned above.

Team Fortress 2 is simply for fun, I play this game to laugh, joke around, relax and have fun. TF2 is good game to have as a backup, worth the money...

CoD series, upcoming MoH are games where you don't need brains and you just wanna shoot the poop out of stuff. These games are simply one man team and they're chaotic and there's no cooperation in the game, it's sad but true, I would buy them in an instant if they wouldn't be shoot fest :)

    Question:

Do you think BFBC2 will die? Will all of the players leave to the next game or stick around? The game is cheap now, and I haven't bought it. But if I do, will there still be a community around the game after it is out of the spotlight? Those are my favorite types of communities/games.

I think alot of people are gonna jump to MoH singest its the same developer. But Dice is already working on Battlefield 3 which you get access to the beta in MoH, so why even bother with MoH, If Battlefield 3 can recapture the Battlefield 2 market, get people to upgrade, theyll be laughing to the bank.

On the same note of recapturing markets, Valve would be smart to put out like a halflife ep 3 / new counter strike combo and dominate pc gaming for another 5 years. Seriously I wouldnt doubt something like 1 in 5 players have played or have seen counter strike source.
