Well it was a clever scheme by Gabe Newell and Valve. There were supposed to be no news on Portal 2 at E3 this year (from earlier news it was stated that they pulled any news on Portal 2 being shown at E3, let alone the PlayStaion 3.

But during the Sony press conference today Gabe showed up and dropped a bombshell that Steam and Portal 2 will come to the PS3. What do you guys think? He also noted that Portal 2 on PS3 will be the best version on consoles.

So there you have folks, Portal 2 for consoles and PC in 2011!!!

I think it's good for console gamers and not so good for pc gamers - another year of being limited to built-for-DX9 engines. Though, it IS valve and they do port games quite well... portal is also fun. I wonder if it will have some kind of multiplayer, and if pc and console players would be able to interact (doubtful)?

I fail to see how bringing games to the PS3 is equivalent to turning their backs on the PC. I swear, some people just look for things to get mad about.

    (a) Concentrating on consoles has never resulted in a good port for PC.

What? It's obvious Steam will be the main platform for Valve now and into the future. Even if Steam does end up on PS3, it will be for PC first and foremost.

Gabe Newell's comment said that Portal on PS3 will be the best version *on consoles*, which clearly implies that the PC version will be king.

Who said they were concentrating on consoles? Last I checked, releasing isn't the same as centering all your development around it. Remember the Orange Box for Xbox 360 and PS3?

Eh? Companies don't tout something and then expect that something that has gone unspoken will be better. The focus is clearly on the consoles, and specifically PS3.

They announced it for the PS3 because it's new for that. It would be rather silly of them to tout Steam for PC when it's been here since 2003.

I was referring to Portal 2...

and to be honest Ziddy got my point (at least gathered from previous posts) that HL Ep 3 keeps getting delayed because Valve keeps releasing other stuff. It was really kind of a jab at Valve for this.

I, for one, care a lot more about Portal 2 than HL2: Ep3.
When Portal 2 was first announced there was no mention of a console release. Additionally, the fact that the PS3 version will offer Steamworks is big news as well. That's why Valve has been touting the PS3 release, because it is indeed something new.

Also, quite frankly, especially after Portal was free on Steam for some time, Valve simply doesn't need to hype Portal 2 for PC, and that's probably the main reason the PS3 release has gotten more hype lately.

I refuse to get excited about Portal 2 on principle, until HL Ep 3 is released.

Moving Valve to PS3 may not be inherently apocalyptic to their PC product line, but it is:

    a) a bad sign of the times in the industry, and

    b) a move being made by a company outdone in their procrastination only by the devs of Duke.

Because of b), I'm quite ready to believe:

Half-Life 2 far and away has outsold Portal. Of course hard to judge with the orange box out there. But Half-Life 2 is a lot more epic than Portal. I'm not saying Portal isn't fun, I greatly enjoyed it. But Valve promised episodic content and basically a conclusion to the Half-Life story.

Understandable, but it is not an excuse at this moment in time. Between HL:Ep2 and today they've already developed L4D, L4D2 and Portal 2. Why not better focus on finishing what has to be finished? I have no idea...

I still hold my hope for Valve presenting something else in this E3.

It suits me just fine because when they do release them, they are quality games. And Left 4 Dead 2 is not the same game as Left 4 Dead. It's a sequel, regardless of your individual opinion on it.

Would you rather see year-by-year releases of mediocre games? I would personally rather leave that to Activision.

Funny, last time this came up, I was criticised saying to give Valve a break, they can only deliver so much with the team they have.

Left 4 Dead 2 was released pretty much exactly one year after Left 4 Dead 1.

Episodic content was fed to us as a way to release a continuing story line much more quickly than a sequel would. Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, Episode one took over 1.5 years, Episode two took about two years after Ep 1. Now we're well over two years from Ep 2 and no sign of Ep 3 in sight. It was six years between Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. We're almost to the six year mark of Half-Life 2 being released.

So what do you think the chances of a Half Life game appearing any time in 2011 or are we going to have to wait until 2012 or beyond?

Will we see Left For Dead 4, Team Fortress 3 and Portal 3 before we see Half Life Episode 3? That's the way it seems to be going...

By the way, this topic should be renamed "Half Life Episode 3 is a lie".

Episode 3 is a lie. Rumors abound that there will be just a strict Half-Life 3. If that's the case it'll probably be another 2-3 years at best. Even Episode 3 if it will exist will be at least another year, probably more at this rate.

    Ditto.

No need to run away and hide, that's probably the truth.

One thing i do like is that the Steamworks enabled PS3 version is supposed to offer multiplayer with the other Steamworks enabled Portal 2 games.
If this enables me to play coop from my PS3 with the PC version im sold.

TF2 was great, with updates it's not even mediocre anymore for me.

L4D1 and L4D2 which is the SAME game to me, unfortunately own that garbage, I consider both games crap.

So I have to disagree, the only quality games I've seen from Valve are HL, HL2 and episodes 1 and 2. Waiting for Episode 3 and hoping Valve stops making terrible - mediocre games.

I never understood that argument. Is the thought that people will buy it for their console instead of wait for PC version? I would think that if someone's going to pirate it they're going to pirate it. If they're not going to spend the money then they're not going to magically come up with $60 to buy the game.

Haha, I think this pretty much sums up this thread. The way I see it, the Half-Life "Episodes" first came about during that fervor about episodic gaming way back when. The titles escape me (as do many things, heh) but I feel like I could come up with a dozen or so franchises that were touting the whole "Episodic content" thing as a feature (the SiN Episodes, for example). And how many of those are left? Heh, the only one that I can think of that has come even somewhat close to fulfilling the original hype is "Sam and Max," and even that was only because of the history of the franchise. Episodic gaming is a nice thought, but at the caliber of the Half-Life series it's just not possible to fulfill on any kind of regular schedule. It was a catchphrase/hypephrase that had its time as a fad and then ran its course. For that reason, I've ceased to consider the Half-Life episodes as "episodes" and instead consider them "condensed sequels" that won't have any kind of set release timeline (especially the third one). The semantic difference makes the waiting slightly less painful, haha.

    SO back to the topic.

The game seems much too confusing to me when i watched the gameplay..
Shooting portals here and there and jumping on the walls and then shooting more portals on the fly and then blue blob comes out of one of the portals and then you jump from the splash it makes and thenOHGODYOUALMOSTGOTCRUSHED and... what?

Makes me wonder if it's actually possible to play this without just going and hoping everything goes well. Can't place a judgement yet though.

I don't know what kind of story the game will have but i doubt it will be nearly as good as portal 1.

It's cool to see the graphics more on today's level too.

Yes, Half-Life and Counter-Strike are the foundation of Valve. Don't ignore them PLEASE! Nothing about either at E3 that I've read either. This better not be a 12 year hiatus like Starcraft 2 was. I'll be retired before I ever see Half-Life 4!

Ok, I saw both the PS3 announcement and the Private Portal 2 Valve event at E3 this year and I have to say, Portal 2 is absolutely amazing. The videos we upped to youtube of it do it no justice at all.

Lemme put it this way. One of the portal 2 devs said the ENTIRE portal storyline was basically done by one guy who just said "Hey, lets have blah!" AFTER the game was made. Portal 2 is being built from the ground up with a story that will tie into the HL universe in a much more prominent way.

    Its valve at its finest.

As for the PS3 thing, it makes no freaking difference concerning quality. At all.

    All sounds good!

Except regarding PS3 comment, how do you know? We've seen it time and time and time again. Developer concentrates on console, and 99% of time ends up as bad PC port. I don't blame Valve for looking to release for consoles, who wouldn't with the revenue opportunity. I just don't want to see PC another afterthought. More importantly, give us Episode 3 ALREADY :D

Do you believe that plot elements covered in Portal 2 will set up some of those that could be dealt with in Half Life 2: Episode 3? Didn't Aperture Laboratories have something to do with the Combine appearance on Earth, or that is at least implied?

The only thing being ported would be the engine framework, and that would only happen once. Once thats out of the way, source's modularity would let rolling upgrades ala pc source games, and would also allow valve to code a game once and just recompile the game for each system. No actual porting of the game. It will be just like the 360 ports, except with steamworks.

Sorta kinda. Portal 2 takes place WAAAYYYY in the future, so while some stuff may be hinted at in the game nothing is going to be out there saying "SOLVED IN EPISODE 3!!!!"

I'm mostly concerned about the gameplay rather than the story, though. Portal's gameplay was simply brilliant, and one of the things I'm afraid of is that Portal 2 might overcomplicate it. That said, I think Valve knows what they're doing, so I'm expecting a great game.

Sure, there are some things that Valve has done in the past that I disagree with, such as the dumbed down gameplay of TF2, but given TF2's popularity it looks like TF2 is the kind of game a lot of people wanted. Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are great games, but the problem with those is not really Valve's fault - it's the result of too many people who have no idea how to play the game properly.

Ok, the new gameplay stuff is freaking awesome. The Dev said that adding new stuff was one of their biggest issues, but also one of their best changes, in portal 2 compared to portal 1. They were also worried about overcomplicating things, so they had to carefully choose what to add and carefully teach the player how to use the new stuff. The sheer length of portal 2 helps greatly in this regard.

But heres a list of new stuff:
    Repulsion Goo
Some Goo that makes you run fast of which the name is escaping me atm.
    Lazers
    Air Vents
    Bouncy floors

    And Coop. Which is win.
