Hi.. Am one of those guys who buy games for their storyline and not for just action.. So i thought this might be a good place to know about the most affecting and touching games in any platform. I felt mafia- city of lost heaven that was released in 2002 was the most touching game i have ever played. What about you guys?
-
Not going to lie...but I nearly cried at the end of portal
-
Games that I've played that are quite emotionally involved are:
The Longest Journey series - definitely more so with Dreamfall
Mass Effect series - specially in ME2 if you have invested a lot of time liking some of your squad members, you will be sad if some of them did not make it at the end.
Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) - 5 mins in, the mood of the game is already set. -
Ya even i like ME2. And also, one particular scene in the starting missions of assassin's creed 2 where something sad happens in front of your eyes and you could do nothing about it.. :-(
-
the OLD Kings Quest and Space Quest games from Sierra ( the good old EGA days )
-
atlantis, which was a point and click game when I was a kid..
ok so much atlantis games. I meant the lost tales by cryo in 1997 -
Mass effect 2, I was heart broken when kelly died.
-
Shenmue series always struck a cord with me along with FF7 and Grandia 2 and finaly KOTOR and Mass Effect 1, I just started on 2
-
OH GOD, Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Sad ending was sad.
-
Everquest!!!!!!
-
Out of the recent ones, I would say mass effect 2.
-
Planescape: Torment. Hands the hell down.
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer was also very good. Unfortunately, the original NWN2 campaign is the opposite of touching (it's more along the lines of cliche out the ears), but it's totally worth the rich world of Rasheman and experiencing being an absolute pariah, save for that one woman who for some reason follows you around in spite of your status, even at her own peril. I'd say more, but that story must go spoiler-free until you experience it for yourself! -
Final Fantasy X essentially for the ending and Legend of Dragoon for the jerk that killed Lavitz =(
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Riven (duh)
Cave story - one of the most touching games ever. if you can get into the old school stuff.
Morrowind is extremely good.
of course what people find touching may differ quite a bit. I'm not particularly convinced by the characters at all.
I think the best games just express something profound about humanity and the human subconscious and just do it incredibly well.
The entire world of the game is the defining factor as we all know that AI is really the worst part of any game in a technological sense.
When it comes down to it most games want us to be as free as possible to do and act as we do in normal life but within the game. Most of the difference tends to be how many things you perceive that you have to process and think about because it is a new unknown thing. Even if its a representational thing.
which is why games like oblivion are horrible. even if you went as slowly as possible it would be boring because of all the generated content. by the time you're half into the quest you know exactly what a place will be like if its an elven ruin, cave, or fort. -
Unreal 2 drew a tear :'/
-
For me, Halo 1 and Halo 3 were quite touching. Halo 2, not so much (more like, "...why is this the end?"). Bioshock was pretty good too.
Mass Effect 2, not so much for me. But maybe that's because I got lucky and everyone survived my first play-through -
Counter-Strike: Source in definitely on the list!
-
FF7 10 chars
-
iwbtg
when i got to the end, i wanted to cry -
Penumbra series. The whole story. happenings and characters are great. When you reach the last parts.... what happens and the ending are awesome.
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Mario - I love it when he gets the Princess.
/tears up
Ooops sorry ... spoiler! -
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
FF7 - Sephiroth kills Aerith.
You think you'll revive her as the game goes on. The game leads you on and makes you think that it's possible. You think there's hope. No dice. Very sad. It's even sadder with the awesome "Aerith's theme" song. Breaks my heart everytime.
GTA IV - and the sad thing is, you choose between your sad ending.
a few other moments in other final fantasy games, chrono cross, metal gear solid, and others that I can't remember at the moment. -
-
-
The entire metal gear solid series, Kojima is a genius, def shed some tears at the end of 3, and a lil at 4. Theres more....... just cant think of em off hand, MGS is always the first that comes to mind.
-
Some old games like xenogear, chrono trigger, tales of destiny 2 and some FF. I really can't find any newer game that's touching, and I do play almost all games.

Final Fantasy 8 had numerous touching scenes, though they are quite easy to laugh at, being so cheesy in some ways. Metal Gear Solid 3 hit pretty hard too. The very last scene before the credits makes you feel like ****.
Edit: Someone mentioned Xenogears. Holy crap PROPS!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost forgot!!!!!!! -
Modern Warfare. When Gaz gets capped.
And they did it to me again in MW2, when Ghost gets capped and torched.
He better survive MW3! -
Tactics Ogre for the GBA had some touching scenes and I am currently playing through Tactics Ogre for the Snes the first time and I get the feeling there will be more. I enjoy these games much more than any recent titles and emulation is perfect with many advantages that adds even more enjoyment. For example using the turbo fast forward during training mode.

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The Last Remant: I'll admit I never say the reveal coming.
Left 4 Dead 2: OH MY GOD BILL NOOOO
Prince of Persia Sands of Time Trilogy: Moreso the first and third game (haven't played the midquel yet), with everything coming full circle. -
CoD 4 at the end when that machine gunner is pulling you away from the fight, and he gets shot while moving you. Also when the Russians are performing CPR on Price.
Not super touching, but I don't play touching games. -

Valkyrie Profile. Lenneth and her human identity Platina versus Odin and Freya.
-
Chrono trigger was during the scene where frog wielded masamune again to cut open the mountain, and reminiscing his past with the frog's theme playing, it was the tear of awesome. -
-
Castlevania SOTN. Tears of laughter.
Damn, I love that game...
Huge Mass effect fan, too. -
I have to agree with those who pick out the original Mafia......is pretty easy to like/grow attached to the main character.
The ends of GTA4 and COD4 also come to mind...... **(spoilers below)**
(Kate McReary getting gunned down outside the church and Price? getting killed in the final firefight on the bridge). -
I dub thee thread: The List-the-Most-Experience-Ruining-Spoilers-You-Know Thread.
-
Thanks a freakin' lot guys. Now I don't have to bother going out to buy all these games - I know what happens know, second hand experience.
Spoiler tags are extremely useful.
For me, GTA IV, COD4 and MW2. But then again, those are just about the only games I've played, apart from Crysis and Crysis Warhead, lol. Portal was a good game, but I don't think it evoked emotions of the same type as other games. Portal is more mysterious. More like taking a journey through an evil mastermind with no regard to human life. -
But if we're talking PC only, then I'd say ME2 can be pretty touching depending on your choices -
for me
FF7 - Sephiroth kills Aerith
FF8 - Squall and Rinoa in ragnarok while returning to earth .
other games like MW2 -
Fable 2 at the end,
when the dog saves you by taking the bullet which was meant for the character. Needless to say, I chose to resurrect him -

Hmmm let me think..... I can't really comment on Mass Effect 2 because my first playthrough all my buddy's survived. But as far as actually crying because of a game? I can't say I ever have, but some emotion definitely sparked inside my mind... Some games come to mind
FFX, FFX-2 (Glad they got to be together in the ending), Dead Space (Nicole), Halo 3 (end credits) The Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time (Because I didnt want the game to end EVER), The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (Just being out in the see was beyond words) and finally Cal of Duty Modern Warfare 2: Multiplayer (Do you know how much it hurts when you throw a ps3 controller at the ground in frustration and it hits your foot?)
Closest to ever shedding a tear
FF7 When Aerith dies (Its over 10 years old its NOT a spoiler anymore), definitely made me -
Minesweeper, especially at then end when all is said and done, he puts on his shades and walks off into the sunset in search or other mines the be swept.
That was one emotional & moving game. -
FFX, no other game ever made me 'connect' with the characters like that.
I heard many great things about FFVII but since I started with a ps2, i'm affraid the graphis will turn me off (the graphics in FFVIII were nice for psone capabilities, but since I played part X first it seemed really noobish and I bet the graphs in 7 will be much worse). -
The end of Fallout 1 . After enduring Mutants, Ghouls, Deathcalaws, Raiders, Radiation, Rad Scorpions and more, seeking the ever elusive "Water-chip", you finally return to Vault 13 with said water-chip and save the day, only to be told by the Overseer, that your no longer welcome in the vault because you have been tainted by the outside world ! Game ends with you walking off , back into the hell you just left ! Great ending !
-
Grim Fandango hands down. It was the only video game story to really affect me. Psychonauts was also a mind altering experience.
If somebody mentions Dreamfall or Fahrenheit, I'll have to shoot them. Those are the two most overrated interactive movies (zero gameplay) with the most horrible convoluted plots. Evil ai, aztec gods, and aliens all in one game. -
I agree, Fahrenheit was fine the first half, then everything pretty much went downhills - ridiculous plot with the alien, repetitive gameplay, and so on.
Dreamfall? I'm okay with it, and still loven' it.
Also, please don't shoot me. -
Naw I won't shoot you.
The first TLJ was decent if a little easy. I figure for the second game they had a really ambitious idea for an epic storyline. They started making it but forgot about the "game" part. Then they realized the plot was too long for one game and just released it.
In the end, Dreamfall is just a 2 hour cutscene of staring at a girl in her undies with zero explanation, no resolution, and wth-did-I-just-waste-my-time-for ending.
I just had such high expectations for that game. -
1. Let's try and keep the comments appropriate, ok? Thanks.
2. Please please please USE SPOILER TAGS! Don't give away parts of a game. They look like this:
I don't get paid for this "job"
Which will end up looking like this:
I don't get paid for this "job"
Thanks guys (and girls) -
I'd have to say Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The most touching games ever played
