Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater & Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots.

    EPIC.

The whole story is touching, especially when snake is battling through the hall of microwaves and the music in the background in MGS4, truly touching.

TBH, no other game compares to Hideo Kojimas awe-inspiring creations.

Roll on Metal Gear Solid: Rising :D

Hmm, for me without thinking too hard.

Heavy Rain had it's moments (and it's plot holes as well :()

Okami for the music and art style combined which did a lot to immerse me in the game.

ME 1&2 as some others said.

    The first homeworld game

When you start the 3rd mission and everyone is dead, the planet destroyed
Not to mention the soundtrack as well which really added to the atmosphere in some missions.

Oh my goodness, how could I forget Homeworld!? That game was all sorts of rockin', and totally shook me when (spoilers) happened!

Also, definitely the most moody, sometimes creepy, sometimes vicious and unforgiving depictions of space I have ever seen.

Despite its age, I gotta rate it as one of the top real-time space strategy games ever - top three at least.

HA! I think you win the thread!

I second that! MGS4 is the best put together game of all time in my opinion! you can tell there has been no detail they havn't thought about! everything is just so well written and designed! ahhhh I love MGS4!!! And yes the ending where every small story comes to its final points and you can feel its all on snakes shoulders to struggle his way through the corridor! ahh epic doesn't describe how good it is I feel! :D

    1. Baldur's Gate I/II - the story is so *complete* that you can't help but get emotionally tied into it, even if you didn't end up crying at the end.
    2. Half Life 2 (with or without Episodes) - Again, very easy to get caught up in the storyline

Yea, when that certain someone dies I was really depressed for the first time ever. I remember soon after that part of the game there was a snowboarding mini game, and I was thinking that this would be a lot more fun if I wasn't so upset over the earlier happenings.

Thought of yet another one. Well, a few, actually.

The Oddworld games, especially Abe's Exoddus and Stranger's Wrath. They're both light-hearted fun for *most* of the ride, but they've got a very definite darker tone the whole way as well, that every now and again rears its ugly head. In Exoddus, you see your buddies enslaved, being beaten, being worked to death, their bodies mutilated to keep them from escaping. Some are so angry they will kill anything they see, including you. Others are just so depressed, and suicide seems the only way out...

Stranger's Wrath takes a completely different twist, and the first 2/3 of the game seems pretty light and straightforward. Then the twist comes and... well, it's a twist worth seeing! If you've still got an Xbox, play this game!

I guess it's just dependent on how involved you are in the game at the time. Might be better that you don't, you could argue that it means you know the difference between the game and reality.

For me, it just depends on how much I like the characters or if the story connects with me at all. Some games ppl found touching (like ME2) I feel nothing in while in other games there are times when I really care what is gonna happen to the characters.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, to a lesser extent.
    Baldur's Gate 2/Icewind Dale 2

Games that go for the minimalist approach seem to resonate more with me as opposed to over-detailed games that leave very little room for imagination and wonder. Of course, there are some exceptions, like the Metal Gear Solid titles, but that's because every character from that series expresses a Darwinian personality and that has always struck a chord with me. :)
