hey any chance of making this a voting thread (would be interesting to see how people are voting for)...
Well i was in the computer store last week and lady was trying to persuade me to preorder a PS3 saying that it would sell out and would be difficult to get anywhere...as i suspected it didnt come anywhere near selling out...which is a shame...the PS3 has so much potential...for me living in europe (uk) i think sony made the biggest mistake of them all...they couldnt get enough stock to ship to europe prior to christmas...and nintendo sold out completly here for the wii...and even now they still have stock issues in the uk...lol...
they let themselves down with not being able to ship before xmas otherwise it would have been a big hit here...im kinda stuck between choosing between ps3 or xbox 360...
for me im impressed with the xbox 360 (its been out for more than a year and is holding its own ground against the ps3 and arguably can be considered better)...i am a sony fan...but im holding back for a couple of months (to save up for one)...so not sure which one...lol...the only thing that its pushing me towards an xbox 360 is halo 3...the ps3 has will have classic titles coming its way such as metal gear solid or gta...
Mind you havent had much hands on with xbox 360 but have on the PS3 (which is really wierd lol)
anyway i read an article on trustedreviews and it was saying that the gpu of the ps3 is similar to the 7800gtx....

ps3 = too expensive
xbox 360 = xbox on meth.
(faster! Stronger! well.. at least until it dies.
)
btw. sunjhoon. if ur interested in the results of a ps3 vs xbox poll. you can make one too. -
I'll make it a poll now.
-
Now it'll really turn ugly...
-
i thought there be no point starting a new thread for the results of it seeing as this one is packed full of detail anyway...and an ongoing debate is going on through here
in the uk xbox 360 premium console + hd dvd drive works out to be around £40-50 less than PS3 so the question now for uk people is the PS3 worth that extra money? hmmm
cheers for making it a poll... -
Please don't post such things unless you back it with a strong argument.
Cell processor is moving to the 65nm,plus the cost of production for the blu-ray is decreasing. Also you should note that nVidia has not disclosed any info about the RSX capabilities rather than a few numbers. So we cannot compare the real output of the two GPU's.On the other hand,65nm Cell processors might have their clocks ramped up.With some optimization on the Linux end and the optimization of the SDK and engines for both of the consoles we would not be able to tell which one is better [the reason that I have not and will not vote unless some of these changes take place], I agree that PlayStation 3 didn't have a smooth takeoff but we cannot tell which one will be the king in the future.
I repeat. If you just want to post : "XBOX beats them all" or "I LOVE XBOX" or "PS3 is the king" or things like that,You have chosen the wrong thread. Please open [or recycle] one of those fanboy-oriented threads.
-Thanks.
Oh, and you already have a MONSTER at hand,It will not hurt if you wait 2-3 months and see what happens
-
Yeh i will wait a while dude too its price is a little steep for me. My Beast of a laptop will do fine for now
Anyway have spent ages looking for this but finally found it graphics comparison of xbox 360 and PS3
and this other link jus giving a head to head of the system specs...its like the hd-dvd vs blu-ray battle all over again... -
Anyone complained about the launch-time ports of PlayStation 3, sources said that they were not optimized and were merely ports.MGS is and example of a PS3 optimized game. The word came out that Valve has optimized their engine for both consoles.[though saying that Cell Processor was a pain to optimize for]
-
What's next, a perfect Linux optimise for Cell? It would be cool thou... All Linux(and only Linux) user would switch to Cells.
-
Yellow Dog Linux is the Sony preferred version, it was able to run on the PS3 from launch date. Fedora Core 6 and Ubuntu both run on the PS3.
Unfortunately, the thing with running Linux on the PS3 is that the Linux graphics drivers have to run through the PS3's hypervisor. I believe this is so you can't play pirated games on the PS3 or something, but 3D performance under Linux on the PS3 is currently poor. -
*Zips up flame coat*
Is this thread purely about the technical side of things, or will we eventually get some analysis on the games? At the risk of being unconventional, even the most geekiest of tech geeks must still look at the games before comparing one console to another? -
Sure thing,I welcome these things, though the link provided in page 6 is full of game comparisons [it goes to gamespot was very informative about the current games - though I must add in these games PS3 almost loses or equals XBOX360 and rarely comes better] - I will not buy a gaming console unless I start developing games for them [I've got enough on my plate with PC development already,so don't ask me about it at least for 7 months] (cause I've got a good Desktop and very good laptop already, buying a gaming console doesn't make sense)
-
I do personally feel that the PS3 has the most potential to surpass the 360 but it is facing a very uphill battle and let me say that I am a Playstation fan and own none of the consoles.
I really like how open the PS3, free to switch out the hard drive instead of using Microsoft's idiotic proprietary one, free to use USB pen drives, memory sticks, etc. to save games and transfer data. Like its XBM interface more.
Its a shame several PS3 exclusives have gone to the 360, I really want the PS3 to succeed and hope it gets a more install base. I also like so far how well built it is unlike the 360 with all the overheating and ring of death stories. I also like that even though the PS3 is bigger, the power supply is built in and the system is quieter as well.
Shame that in almost all Xbox 360 and PS3 ports, the 360 version is better. -
Becoz translating a DirectX language to Xbox360 is easier as to the PS3...
-
Of course the 360 plays better. Better video card and more then enough power from the processor. Also easier to program for. PS3 is just overhyped, mismatched hardware. They should have went with a better vid card, then it would be better visually then the Xbox360. Right now that is the ultimate bottleneck.
New 360's are being built with chips less prone to overheating too. At least the elite version is. -
Actually the only new changes apart from the snazzy new black colour, is HDMI and a 120gb HD. The 65nm chips will not be inside 360s for a while yet. 360slim maybe next year? Who knows
-
For the CPU,yes it's more difficult.Though game developers buy their engines rather than making them themselves.Like GameByro and Unreal,And these engine are already optimized for multi-core and CELL processor. So it will not make much of a difference for many developers. And the PS3 supports OpenGL (it actually supports something called OpenES but has minor differenced with OpenGL.CELL is powerful, but difficult to program.I agree, the GPU is actually weaker than 7800, but I want to see how it compares against Xenos before judging.
We should wait for Valve and Unreal engine's and MGS's performance before we can speak about the Graphics. -
Yeah, wait for some PS3 optimised games before comparing. Or look at Oblivion.

I came across this today :

w00t PC FOR THE WIN!!!
lol, sorry -
In order to use HDMI 1.3 you need an HDMI 1.3 compatable reciever. If not you won't be experencing the slightly improved sound. Most of the people who complain about this stuff do not even have the hardware to run it. Slightly better SQ is the only benefit of 1.3 over 1.2. Personally I could care less. Also the Xbox gives you the opportunity to run an optical cable while using HDMI. Since that cable only uses one cable for both sound and video. Otherwise you must connect it to a reciever and then to the TV using another cable. Or TV then reciever if your set has the outs. So that's a plus.
PS3 has no real advantages over the Xbox 360. Well if unless you want Blueray or an exclusive with no chance of porting (And many games are).
Good links for graphics comparison.

Each has advantages over the other. Xbox has, well, price. And the PS3 has much better program compatibility.

:] uhm I dont think I was being a "fanboy" for either.
I was actually pointing out the NEGATIVES for each system.
and while i know the PS3 price will decrease, its still more expensive right now.
and what i meant by my xbox statement, is that the 360 is like the original xbox, but Faster and more powerful, but ive seen so many die, its not even funny. one of my friends had to send his into microsoft 3x already...
and btw. I think Microsoft need to slow it down a bit.. I know the Tech Race is pretty big in competition, but if releasing unfinished products is the only way companies are going to try and get the "edge" over another then thats not going to work. hopefully MS learned their lesson from the 360 and vista. -
Though I have heard one of the "red led of death" issues which is caused by overheating. Can be cured by the good ol' wet towel trick.
-
They don't learn and i guess never will but they are good in something... and tat's copying... and as for sony... they are really overpriced...
-
Better program compatibility? As in... backwards compatibility? The Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list is continuously growing, most popular games right now are backwards compatible.
Or you mean... it is easier to program for? Just google that and you will see what programmers think about it.. about how generally harder it is to program for because of its unconventional design... although both new systems are tougher to program for than last generation hardware, the PS3 does take the title of being hardest to program for..
Or do you mean... it is more powerful? This may or may not be true.. the GFX card in the 360 is more powerful while the PS3 CPU is more powerful... but since the 360s CPU is easier to program for it will initially be more powerful because it is easier to squeeze the extra juice out of it...
Or do you mean.. you can put linux on it and use it to surf the web? Well what do you have a computer for? I like having a keyboard and mouse.. though then again I don't know you -
The US and Japan version of PS3 have a dedicated chip and the European has software emulation. As for the XBOX 360.It's totally software emulation. So the only current advantage for XBOX is the fact that it was released sooner. And also remember that XBOX360's predecessor's CPU was something totally different. It was a general purpose PC-based CPU while Xenon is a streaming processor. So the backward compatibility can be only assured by trying and trying.[because Xenon might be slower than XBOX's CPU while doing pretty much everything faster] and Now,in the european version PS3 has a streaming processor(CELL),Trying to emulate a streaming processor. So I daresay if XBOX360 and PS3 were released at the same time, PS3 would be a step or two ahead of XBOX in software emulation.
The Operating System on the PS3 is Linux which is an opensource OS,an OS that plenty of programs exist with PowerPC compatibility already.
People have installed different distro's on PS3,like Ubuntu and even Fedora.
This does not fall into the more powerful category. But yes, initially the Xenon is easier to program. After a while and when engines have been optimized and matured. The PS3 will win from XBOX in CPU power.
It's not just surfing the web.F@H is just a little of what can be done with PS3.And these kinds of expansions are just starting to appear. While XBOX360 is just a gaming console [In fact I'm sure that Microsoft intentionally does this to keep people's need to PC (and hopefully for them Windows) ].
But PS3 can easily eliminate much of the People's need to PC's.Plus the fact that since PS3's are similar they can make things like that 3D shop without the need to optimize the code for pretty much everything.
Also, with the news from XBOX elite the PS3 will have a higher hand as a home cinema media player.
Excuse me, but your opinions are really biased. -
whats the cost of each of these as of now ? last time i checked they were around $ 500.
-
Excellent report Mujtaba since you probably gained a lot of knowledge with this, I would like to know your personal opinion. What would you buy Xbox 360 or PS3.
-
Alright.. but we are talking in the present aren't we? We are comparing the systems as they are in the present As of right now they are pretty equal in that respect.. the software emulation seems to work pretty well (I have yet to encounter a game that is noticeably affected by the software emulation, sure some games encounter a little bit of abnormal slowdown here and there, but nothing serious. And I've noticed some games actually seem quicker and snappier).
I'm not disagreeing with this.. though I noticed that Fedora did have some issues on the PS3
Hence why I said "Initially it will be more powerful...", it is pretty common knowledge that the PS3 Cell Processor is a very powerful chip but it will take a while to get used to it... Which is why I kind of noted how as of right now the 360 CPU is easier to program for and easier to utilize its capabilities right now. So as of right now, it is more powerful.. ... ...
True.. the PS3 is intentionally a multimedia machine, and you pay a little extra $$$ for it.
But the PS3 is not as capable as a PC. Yes you can run linux on it, but there are problems with it. Surfing the internet is pretty neat, but there are some kinks to work out before a console system is able to fully run an OS with as many hiccups as you would normally encounter in a PC.
I do own a 360 so of course my views are biased, but there is no reason to attack my views because yours are different.. and you really can't say you aren't biased in one direction or another.. I was just giving the 360 view on the advantages that the person posted.
Yes one or two remarks MAY have come off biased.
I find the statement that "my statements are really biased" a rude statement considering that what I said has been confirmed by other sources... and for one I even stated that the they both are stronger in some areas than the other but I also included that this may or may not be true, that statement was based off articles that I have read elsewhere... but going through the time to cite them is tedious and unnecessary unless someone comes along and calls you bias.
but I do agree that the PS3 is a very capable machine (my keyboard and mouse statement was false by the way) though right now, the Xbox 360 is simply a better machine from a gamer's standpoint, it has had a year head start to buff out the kinks that it had, the online service is solid and the games are starting to ramp up in quality (not to say that the PS3 doesn't have a good lineup of games coming up...);
If you are adventurous and want to try putting linux on your PS3... then get the PS3. But the PS3 probably won't ever take over PCs... you have to have a some computer knowledge to install a Linux distro on the PS3... and there are issues that exist with this, a computer is simply friendlier to use, if you have a laptop you don't need an outlet (atleast for a few hours) and you don't need an external screen... and if you think about it, the people who would get a PS3 to be able to fool around with it trying to see what they can install on it already have computers.
I hope that clears up my views a little bit.. and I am certainly not really biased so don't be too quick to judge. -
Thanks
I want to see what PS3 grows to become,I specially want to see the upgrades of the console and MGS [and the likes of it]
and then judge.

Holy cow.. just imagine what the NEXT-gen games will look like.. and we haven't even seen the full abilities of these systems!

One thing is for sure.
I will have to buy a G81/G90 or an R600 this summer. -
I am for sure going to make my own desktop in 3 years... (when I go to college and my laptop will be uber-outdated, unless the costs go down and power goes up)..

OK. I will elaborate on the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3. The Playstation 3 release was preceded by too much hype and publicity. Sony claimed the Playstation 3 would clean your dishes, groom your dog, make your dinner and do your homework. When it finally came out, it could not live up to the hype. I hear many reviews that describe the PS3's graphics as sub-XBOX 360. Not only does the XBOX 360 have better graphics, but it also has XBOX live. This is a great feature that allows games to be played in real time over the internet. XBOX live is not quite as good as Battle.net yet, but it should improve with time. -

Personally, I have nothing against the 360. It is an awesome system. As far as graphics...the playstation 3 is lacking right now due to the games actually being ports from the other systems and no real improvements were made to the graphics. The other thing is that developers were only given the dev package for the PS3 in June/July of 06, thus the lack of games and graphics.
The PS3 is going to be a great system once they improve the firmware...like being able to play your own music in the games.
As far as graphics...I wouldn't say 360 has that big of an edge. I have PS3 and my friends have 360's...there are some awesome looking games on the 360...I looked at the screens for Mass Effect and they are awesome.
The PS3 is lagging behind due to the dev package late release, but I think in time it will have better graphics. The online play once Home is released will be cool too (like Live).
I can't wait to see the results from both systems once they reach there peak in performance.
-
Considering the first X-Box could do this, if you're resorting to listing this a strong point of the PS3, then, well....
-
But only in certain games. We're waiting for them to introduce multitasking to both the PSP and the PS3.
I believe the X360 can do this, I was playing R6:Vegas at a mates place, and he had rap going in the background. (Needless to say, I didn't play long, he refused to turn off the music
)

One thing that it was clear in the PS2, farther that the success as console, is that Japanese games were way more original than American games. Even when the Xbox was pretty popular and many companies were doing games for both, there were many PS2-exclusive games that were amazing. That was because many Japanese games that were really good, were not suited for the American public taste (general) (like many Anime's based games), so simply they did not go to the xbox format.
A typical example of this is "Shadows of the Colossus", an amazing game that has so much of this Manga culture, which is almost unknown in the US, a bit more known in Europe and so popular in Japan, and that many of us enjoy so much.
I wonder if that can put the PS3 over the 360 in time (1-2 years), may be not for the general public, but for the fine gamer. -
I just wanted to point out (if noone has already) that the ps3 is gonna have alot less exclusives than the ps2 did (developers are realizing that u can sell more games if you go multiplatform) and we will also see more games on pc and 360 that won't make it too ps3 because sony are a bunch of arrogant pricks that thought that they could make a system that uses a CPU architecture whose performance does not match it's complexity. Developers hate the cell processor. Valve didn't want to waste time figureing out how to optimize HL2 orange box for ps3 and just hired a seperate team to port it over, and not every developer has the money or will to hire such a team.
-
Thank you sooooo much, now i can rub this in my friends face about how much better the 360 is than the PS3. But i have a question concerning the price. I knew that sony wanted to keep the price under 700 dollars, so with Blu Ray, did that make the GPU worse, just because they didnt want to put more money in it? Can you explain that to me further in a PM?

USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
The PS3 is harder to dev for...because it is the first of its kind. Alot of devs said they are going to develope for the PS3 it is just going to take longer (cost a little more). But they will still develope. Granted some of the 3rd party devs won't due to it the cost (for now). Once the programming is worked out and it gets easier I wouldn't doubt if more devs do games. But we will have to wait and see for that. -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
Well that is just one thing that I would like. There are plenty of other things the PS3 could do, it just can't until the update the firmware. -
Once a game company releases it's own engine to other companies for a price. Then we will see more of the ps3 games flowing in.
Currently I own 2 Xbox360s, one of which is bricked! We just bought a ps3 about 4 days ago, and you know what? Motorstorm is AMAZING! And I can't say that for any of my 20+ Xbox360 games. After about 2 races, I started messing with the sixaxis part, and it's pretty accurate and fun to race with.
Live, is dumb! I can't believe I payed $60 for that garbage!! I'm never paying for it again, it should be free! What are you paying for!? to make your own server, out of YOUR xbox360!!!
The point here is, that yes, while the ps3 only really has......3 games, they are amazing! I'm talking about resistance, motorstorm, and VF5. The only problem is that there's ALOT of potential in that fax machine, but it's taking game devs FOREVER to release their games!
Give it another year, you'll see how good it is! -
Come on, we all know the games are the ones who decide. Now that the xbox 360 is getting all that sweet games that a couple of years ago you could only play at the ps2 like devil may cry, gran thetf auto (at the same time in both consoles) it'll be a difficult console to beat (just add gears of war and halo 3).
Maybe the same miracle will happen again for the playstation, it'll begin to get the great games like 1 year after its relase. Maybe not. But I¡m still waiting to see where MGS4 goes!!! -
PS3 still has Singstar coming, and Killzone 3. Those are two games I'm waiting for.
The ultimate PS3 - XBOX 360 comparison thread!
