So I'm pretty strongly leaning towards the Defiance III from Pcspecialist https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/defianceIII-17/ not sure if that saves my options

If not i'm going for the 1070 GTX with an i7-6820HK and 8GB RAM.

I heard the CPU isn't amazing, will it bottleneck the 1070? Should I be going for the Octane instead?

Also is it worth getting 16GB RAM or is 8GB enough?

Is it dumb to not get two hard drives? I was thinking of getting the 1TB Seagate. If not then the 500GB Seagate and 120GB Kingston.

Lastly, will this computer ensure ultra settings at least for a year? I definitely want to play everything currently out on ultra.

Any other upgrades I should be making? £1600 is already over my budget but I may be willing to go up to 1700.

    Thank you :)

6820HK + 1070 is enough if your budget is limited... Also get 16GB RAM... As for HDD, I suggest a 240GB SSD a minimun + 1TB HDD...

Is that in case a hard drive breaks or does it make the laptop run faster? And RAM makes the laptop faster too right?

Get the thermal paste upgrade (£9) and the silver warranty with a year free shipping (£5).

I'd get a 480gb or better ssd and now make do until you can add a 1tb/2tb ssd aftermarket.

...drop a few hints for the holidays about the ssd or for some of the cash to go towards it.

16GB DDR4 is $100 aftermarket, so I would recommend comparing prices of upgrading vs aftermarket.

Transfers heat from CPU/GPU to heatsink better so that it runs cooler ...it will probably be applied better as well.

Don't go too cheap on storage. Slow HDD = slow and painful OS and games loading and some really noticeable stuttering in at least some games that continuously load assets from disk to memory.

Ok so like the 1TB Seagate and a 120 or 240 SSD should do it?

Also just in case would anyone recommend a better laptop for around that price? Or recommends that's I save a bit more and get the Octane with better CPU? Will it be a huge difference?

The guy says that you need a desktop CPU for the best 1070 performance. Is this true? Am I losing out with the 6820Hk?

Edit: What is the purpose of a Thunderbolt Port?

He's technically correct, but it shouldn't be that important on your display. Have you ever overclocked before? The 6820hk can overclock quite well and will put it more in line with a desktop cpu. It's not too difficult.

    I'd be worried about a 6700hq or non OCed 6820hk on a 120Hz display more than a 60-75Hz one.

Thunderbolt III is just a really high bandwidth port. It's useful for eGPU set ups but that's about it. Even SATA ssds will run at full speed over USB 3.1 Type C.

Galm is right, you don't need to worry about a 1070 being bottlenecked on a 1080p/60Hz display.

Alo, don't blow a ton of money on expensive RAM, the returns are beyond diminishing.

No never overclocked. I'm pretty daft with computers and really only use them for gaming. With my luck I'd try to overclock and burn out my laptop lol.

Ok so Thunderbolt won't really affect me in anyway if I'm not planning on getting an eGPU?

Lastly, and I know I've probably asked this a million times but I like reassurance (lol) is this laptop a good buy? And will it ensure I run games on high settings for the next year? It's so much money to spend so at times I worry I shouldn't fork out for a better CPU to make it last longer

Thunderbolt III is a nice to have, but really not necessary unless you want an eGPU.

If your getting the 6820HK and 1070 it'll be a beast. I own that config. It eats games for breakfast, 1080p is still nothing to it for the most part. I play GTA V, Titanfall 2, and Overwatch at 4K.

Overclocking is easy. Intel XTU and google will do it for you. Just know the cpu should go to around 4GHz, don't go above that if your not confident. You shouldn't even need to mess around with voltage, usually you could practically undervolt at that clockspeed.

This is almost a troll question, when at 1080p the GTX 1070 will max any game that comes out in the next 3 to 4 years.
