I have a T61p with the 2.0ghz core 2 and i was wondering if it was possible to overclock the cpu. I have had great luck overclocking the gpu, and i have tpfan control which usually prevents it from overheating. When i tried using software to OC the cpu, The motherboard was not on the list of compatible motherboards. I have messed with a lot of the bios settings, but i didn't see anything about setting custom fsb speeds. Any ideas?

CPU OC is highly dangerous and should not be attempt under almost any circumstance. Besides, I don't one can OC thinkpads

But all of the processors these days, have chips in them that shut it off if it gets too hot. I don't see how you could physically damage it unless it overheated.

custom fsb speeds? Only the most extreme gaming notebooks might have custom fsb speeds and thats a big if. Some have overclocking support for Intel Extreme cpus that adjust the multiplier. A notebook is a notebook not a desktop. ;) And the T61p is considered to be business class. You can undervolt it tho.

i got rm clock and i tried undervolting it, but it didnt seem to work. I really wish i could though, because it often overheats when i game and its not on a hard surface. I also have to have the fan running at like 4000 rpm. has anybody with a t61p managed to undervolt it? if so, then what program did you use?

So you're already overheating during gaming... and you still want to overclock it? Uhhh... what?

Don't overclock your CPU. They don't need to be overclocked. They are already powerful enough. I have actually undervolted mine to save some power and to reduce heat.

I just undervolted mine tonight using RMClock and the other programs to stress test the system and record temps. Follow this guide: Undervolting Guide. Hope this helps you! I know it shaved about 8 degrees off my system. The only downside is that since I have a t61p with a T9300, i lose 100mhz due to there being no 12.5 multiplier. I guess I just have to wait for the patch. And also, don't undervolt and try to OC as well. You are asking for trouble. If anything, you need to increase your voltage to allow the processor to have enough juice to run at a higher multiplier.

    Cheers.

thanks. I have another problem though. I i have 4gb or ram installed, and whenever the gpu gets hot at all, everything shuts off and crashes. I looked it up, and it turns out that some of the t61ps have a problem when you have both dimms full. Many people who had this problem said it was fine once they removed one dimm. I have been doing that, but i really want to use all 4gb of ram. After undervolting my cpu, it never goes above 65 degrees. I am almost positive that this is gpu related.( i am sure it is a hardware problem, because it has happened for me while running linux. )

I use SetFSB to overclock my T7300 (C2D) from 2.0ghz to ~2.4ghz, it gets me higher 3DMarks, but I'm not sure if it benefits me in games.

Unless you have a 64-bit OS, you're not utilizing 4Gb anyway. It's useless.

I think it's possible to OC the CPU provided one knows how to properly do it.

IMO the big problem with the cooling system in the T61p is that there are 3 different processors thermally bonded to the same heatsink inline leading to an exhaust fan "owl" fan.

The CPU is nearest the fan and has heat flowing through it's heat sink from the 2 other processors. (GPU and another).

A much better design IMO would be to have a separate heat sink and fan for each chip on different areas of the motherboard near the edge of the note book. This would keep everthing alot cooler and allow for much better OC benchmarks IMO.
