Probably not...usually graphics cards are what give you more power. The only exception was I heard Oblivion had a sound issue at one point because it didn't like a particular integrated audio card. TwilightVampire might know more about that.

A decent sound card can improve frame rates definitely, but it won't be a monumental difference. It takes processing time away from the CPU and onto the sound card. Here are some benchmarks of games on the Creative X-Fi, which is super high end sound card, you can see the effect it has on some games there.

Few years ago Toms Hardware also compared some sound cards, mostly integrated solutions as well as some Creative 5.1 cards. Course as we move towards dual and quad core this will become less of an issue since developers can create different threads for sound, AI, physics etc.

Actually, CPU cycles are being used to process software based soundcards (most On-board sound cards)... pretty obvious if you think about it.

If you have a dedicated Sound Card (with its own microprocessor), you will get an increase in framerate... but its varied depending on the game and the specs of your system.

When I was at E3 2006, the Fatal1ty booth pretty much proved it while gaming Quake 4 with and without a dedicated soundcard (namely the Creative X-Fi), showed about 5-10 increase for the framerate while using the sound card.

Theoretically, it will give you better fps. However, with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, your processor will not be maxed out by any current games and few future games, so I doubt the difference will be much noticeable, if at all. However, it will increase by a few as others have said, and will give you better sound. It's up to you to determine if that is worth $90.

I know on a desktop, CGW used a sound card and gained a few FPS. As for notebooks, while it DOES take a nice load off of your CPU, most games you wont notice a difference. However, audio intensive games that use EAX and other special effects (environmental effects and surround sound), you should notice some extra FPS, since the game will keep up with the audo better. Havent tried myself, but for 80 bucks it might not be worth it, especially if you already have decent integrated sound, such as Intel HD. Make sure you look on ebay too, I saw ones on there for 30 or 40 bucks.
