I've been a call of duty 2 online addict for a good three years and I just sold my desktop gaming rig to focus on school. Recently when I try to play a few quick games on my m1330 (8400m GS) I get intermittent lag. I usually cap my FPS at 65 because this is the best stable framerate the laptop can manage. I can play for a few minutes at that stable 65fps, but sooner or later my laptop will start getting FPS lag. A few minutes into my game my FPS will drop into the 40s and start hiccuping often. I'm assuming this is because the laptop is overheating and downclocking the GPU? If I'm correct in this assumption, can I fix it by getting a cooling pad? Thanks in advance, any tips are appreciated.

Download GPU-Z to check your GPU temperature and clockspeed during gaming.

You could use HWMonitor but HWmonitor does not show the clockspeed.

Maybe, could also be this: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=100686898&mpage=1&key= (read to the end)
Had this prob a few days ago, thought it was overheating, but temp didnt go above 70, the solution in this link fixed it for me.
Anyhows, if not, download a temp monitor software (gpuz, speedfan) and report your temps here. -
OK, I used rivatuner to check the temperatures and it got up to 104. I'm guessing this is within the 'too-hot' range?

Yup. Way too hot! You are lucky that your computer hasn't turned itself off yet, or your card is fried.
-
That card will die soon at that heat im afraid, WARRENTY ASAP! apparently, its one of the faulty GPU's
-
Yikes, that's extremely hot. Looks like you got one of those "bad egg" 8400M GS chips that are common in the M1330. Luckily, Dell has extended GPU warranty coverage on that model because of it...you better get in contact with them and have them replace your GPU soon.
-
Or...put it in your bathroom, throw some water on it, and you got youself a sona!

Damn, I was afraid of this. Funny thing is that this is my second motherboard and hence GPU. Guess it's time to hop on the dell support chat! Thanks guys

well it seems to high in my user experience with a laptop with 8400m gs is that it doesnt automatically turn of until it reaches 110c....that from my dell vostro 1400 i was gaming online just to find out the thing reached 108c then reached 110c turned off i was like:cry: so yeah if u still have a warranty on it your SAFE!!!
-
I have the same notebook, XPS M1330 and my GPU(8400 GS) gets up between 85-95 degrees while playing games. Should I also call Dell?
-
u should 95c is kinda high....... safe zone will be 90c so maybe u should call before it gets worst or your warranty runs out.....
This is overheating, right?
