it also has a lot to do with the player and not just the connection.
im not the best player in the world by a long shot.... ok im crap but i got a brill connection and im still getting lockups, connection drops, unable to connect and all in cod mw2
-
That;s cause there are no dedicated servers. Even the best connection will get crapped out.
I'm getting an A grade and playing COD4 amazingly with no lag or pressure on a wireless connection. Can't say the same for MW2. Ugh. -

Usually I get "Unable to Connect to Host" for the first 15 matches I try to join, only when I'm lucky do I actually get to play... When I sit on the same floor as my router I get a 14ms ping accord to pingtest. When I'm on the second story of the house it goes to about 40-50. When I'm in my room it goes to ~100.

This is why many people chose to boycott MW2, crappy P2P matchmaking for a PC title is ridiculous. -
Hmm, mine's not great. Surprising for someone who lives out in the sticks though. -
Yeah, the whole IWnet is really annoying, I'm very rarely in the top 5 now because of the lag in most matches. What is really lame is that every game I've played with a good ping and am going against one player who is laggin, I almost always lose.
Every game I've been in today (about 10 matches, 8 different hosts)had a horrible host and everyone was laggin and would eventually lose the connection.
Not really anything you can do I guess, so I started playing COD4 more, and am also doing really well.
Here is what I get:

Just gotta hope this is something they address in a patch...

Im usually the host in MW2, so i can share the love!
honestly mw2 isnt that horrible, sometimes its weird and funny but not too often that we dont enjoy gaming, im part of Team Flawless and we can ground war 9 people at a time IN A PARTY, EVEN while most of the clan members are scattered around America and Canada!
They didnt do a horrible job, they just could have done better -

lokster, we are friends already... You told me your brother is going on your account and told me not to invite him to any games because you don't want him messing up your stats, remember?

Best I got on steam DL was 1.5 mb/s (and to this day i am still in utter amazement on how it is possible for me to download at 1.5 mb/s wirelessly, imagining all that data flying through the air, the walls, your body....weird) I remember when I was happy to download music on WinMx at 7kb/s...not so long ago.
Anyway on topic, MW2, yea I get the odd "picking new client" thingy, but to be honest, I prefer it that way. Faster to get in the action, not too much lag, and it forces me to play map randomly. -

Lag is a HUGE issue on consoles.. the servers are terrible or something. I'm lagging every game I play, yet every online game on PC and every other game on Live is perfect.
-
-
Your internet is actually pretty good. -
2 Mb/s is the norm for broadband in the states. At least according to the FCC.........
-
It is important to remember that these ping tests are done by pinging a dedicated server, and the amount of data is pretty small.
Now imagine that the ping test was hosted on someones residential connection, and that instead of one connection, there was 11 people all trying to run ping tests at exactly the same time using the same server. And then assume that the server is maybe doing torrents at the same time, or someone is using youtube in another room, or the computer is running a game at the same time and doesnt have a lot of CPU cycles to spare. And then, just for fun, imagine that the bloody server keeps changing half-way through your ping test.
This is a pretty good analogy for IW.netThats why a simple ping test of your own connection isn't a reliable indicator of the game quality in MW2.
I can get great pingtest results, but my experience of playing MW2 is horrible and laggy. -
