Which will be able to play games better? I know the pc has the capability to play games released for both systems (like oblivion) on higher settings, so will this notebook beat the 360 game wise?
Dell inspiron 1520, 2.0 ghz proc, geforce 8600GT, 2.5 gigs ram.

no Consoles will always play games better because they are made for it. unless you have an extremely high end desktop, consoles will have better graphics and speed in games
-
Chesie is right. Games released for the original Xbox will sometimes play better than computer versions simply because when a game is coded for a console, it can be optimized much more effectively than on a computer, where many different configurations are possible.
It IS possible to overcome this with a nicely beefed up gaming rig. I know you can make Oblivion even prettier than on the XBox360 with a Geforce 8800 GTX at pretty decent frame rates.
But no, You won't be able to surpass an XBOX 360 with that laptop. Its still a pretty decent gaming laptop that still manages to be portable, which is a big plus. I think if you want to keep within the 15.4 inch screen range (and thus actually have a laptop that is portable) then the Geforce 8600 gt is one of the best mobile cards out there.
What I'm trying to say is, don't expect your new dell to outperform an Xbox 360, it WILL play Oblivion, that is true. It MIGHT even get SORT of near the visuals of the Xbox 360 version, but you will by no means be able to jack up the settings to max and run around with 30 Frames per second. -
Another computer vs console debate eh? Consoles are dedicated machines for playing games and they are very good for your money-gaming ratio. However, computers are built to do everything. Gaming wise a computer can surpass a console but you'll be paying for about 4x as much. Also, there's the question of what type of games do you play.
Computers are good for FPS and strategy and consoles are better for everything else. -
It largely depends on the type of game as well.
Sure, you can get keyboards for consoles too, but for MMORPGs such as WoW and strategy games, computers provide a bit more flexibility.
Also, there are things you can do to enjoy a game more on a computer that you can't on a console - for example, take screenshots and videos and then edit them right away. Chat with others in real-time over teamspeak or ventrilo, mod your games, etc. etc. etc. -
If you were to play a similar game in xbox resolution such as oblivion, you should beat the xbox 360.
It is in the iffy category. The cpu is much faster but the gpu is slower. But in i think its called 1280 x 768 resolution the 128 bit gpu should be better.
And thats even with fighting through a whole os that has no purpose to the game running in the background. -

aww thats too bad, but not surprising. I was just curious thats all.
-
A major arguement for the computer is that you can upgrade it while the console will still be stuck with it's current chips. But this si not true for a laptop.
-
If you don't have like 8800 GTX Ultra SLi, it's not really going to be as good as console. Consoles are built (or used to be built) to do one thing and this is to play games on it. They are cost efficient....however if you have an extremely high end desktop (which will be low end in a few months time) then sure you can beat console graphics and performance.

its sort of hard to compare the two...
there are a lot of things going on. first- cpu power is vastly stronger on your laptop than on the xbox 360.
the gpu is probably almost equal. i would say the 8600m gt is probably right on the heels of the xbox 360's gpu.
the problem is, a game made for the xbox360 and then ported to the pc is going to have an advantage towards the 360.
also, you have the overhead of the operating system you run, which is greater than that on the console.
but its hard to say which is better- cross platform ones aren't going to give you the best picture. but i think the theoretical limitations of each system are really close. keep in mind the xbox360 running in "high def" is basically just 1024x768. (1280x720) and then think about how an 8600m gt performs at that resolution.
take quake 4. bad port onto the 360. it will run better in 1440x900 on your 8600m gt than it will in 1280x720 on an xbox360.
take rainbow six vegas. bad port onto the pc. it will run worse on your 8600m gt in 800x600 than it will in 1280x720 on your xbox360. talk about a bad port. driver issues like no other.
my example just shows that both hardwares are well equipped, and that it is more up to the software makers to determine how much time and effort they want to put into a particular system. the more TLC (tender love and care) a platform gets, the better its going to run. -
Masterchef I think covered it pretty much all. The laptop has better processing power, and a slightly weaker Video processor(Though it is DX10 and the 360 is not).
It's more or less based on how the game is optimized. Oblivion isn't optimized at all for the PC, with some very little modding, you can fix that up to a degree, and quite possibly end up with a better looking and running Oblivion on your laptop then your 360.(Note: This isn't true for every game, only the ones that people mod, or are later patched to be better optimized) -

A 7800GTX wouldn't beat out a 360 because of the 360's unified architecture. But, you have to remeber, just like what everyone else is saying, it's all about the optimization. Also, a console doesn't have to worry about background stuff such as an os, so it can dedicate all it's power to gaming.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
architecture schmarmitecture. unified isn't the be-all end-all to everything. 7800 gtx would at LEAST par with the xbox gpu, if not beat it.
-
I must say, I am very impressed with the 360 however. A lot of great games on it and the graphics are truly superb...it also helps that you can play on a HUGE TV. I definitely want to get one...but I have to choose a mouse and keyboard over a game pad any day. Plus I don't quite understand how those 360 people play online games...do they use regular broadband? -
There's a subscription you have to pay, and it has to be broadband.

the 360 is nice but i'd take the ps3 over it any day. Have you heard of the frag controller that just came out for it? its basically a mouse and the nintendo wii nunchuck. It looks insanely fun. As for graphics, blu ray discs w/ the capacity for 50gigs, and support for 1080p. The only down is the selection of games because of how relatively new it is, but give it 6 months and it will be caught up with the 360 in the number of games.
-
I know 9 people out 10 personally that needed their XBox 360 replaced due to bad cooling, 3 of those more than once but now the XBox is shaping up since they're being returned with better coolers -
I got a 360 and to be honest now i dont think i will do hardcore gaming on a pc ever again.i like the put in and play out the box none of this specs this specs that.what i do miss is the modding side of things but i will always have a half decent comp around me for stuff like footie manger but overall the games that are coming pc in the forth coming months just not flicking my switch at all.xbox has got an amazing line up coming up and i cant wait halo 3online omg.........................Fritz i suppose everything has its good and bad points it seems like consoles are just edging ahead.......
Oh got my gold sub online for 32 quid for a whole year and i use normal broadband.i play fear, battlefield 2,far cry,pro evo got oblivion and it runs like a dream hmmmmmmmmm i wonder if i am pro xbox 360 lol -
this is a notebook website & the sad fact is notebooks just arent ideal if u want the best graphics- the Xbox360 is a games console & is capable of very good graphics since its got decent hardware & programers can optimise on it very easily- much easier than say a PC. High-end PCs are able to outperform the Xbox360 since Insanely powerful new graphics cards are always around the corner- however notebooks just cant compete- a top end mobile graphics card isnt in the same league as a high end PC card- its more like a medium end PC card.
If u want to game on your laptop- yes u can have good graphics- but not the best & expect to keep the resolution down. -

not quite the same exact comparison, but it's close. -
lol I love that picture.
And I found that picture about 2 years ago, lol so that's kinda funny. -
I really think the comparison of pc gaming vs console gaming is irrelevant due to the fact that different genres play better on different platforms.
-
Is the sony pic about to say, WE wish we would had stolen Rare...Candy, any pokemon fans out there? If thats not what they are saying im clueless. But whoever started this thread, thanks, bc I was under the same debate myself, and my option was to get an absolutely sick gamng laptop(Sager 5790 hopefully w/ 8700gt, or a halfway decent laptop and a
X360 Elite. All this before I go to college that is. I still am unsure, so anyone have any opinions?
And by the way Im into FPS games like Arma, all the rainbow six games, and hopefully upcoming crysis. -
