This whole "Windows Live" deal (in relations to Gears of War)

Basically, what does "Windows Live" do for Gears of War? I heard you can't play Ranked matches without Windows Live Gold, which is totally fine by me. But what I really want to know is if you can still host/join and play Co-op without it.

I want to pick it up and play Co-op with a friend, but I don't want to simply have a trail of 1 month of Windows Live Gold and have it run out and not be able to play co-op anymore...

Can anyone shed any light on this issue?
