I was perusing through my March 2008 Maximum PC and they have a gaming section.
Of the games the make note of the following they gave positive reviews of which I haven't played and thought they received mediocre reviews previously. Maybe patch additions or something helped out some of the bugs I don't know. But I would like your opinions on these if you've played them:
(1) Shadowrun - This is a DirectX 10 only game, so my main reason for avoiding it. But it also received average reviews, and is mainly multiplayer only. And I wasn't about to spend $50 on a MS game for Vista only either. I think its cheaper now though.
(2) Overlord - This seems like a fun game, but it sounded as if it had its share of issues and glitches and got boring after a bit. Your thoughts?
(3) Medal of Honor: Airborne - I enjoy most of the big title WWII shooters out there. Never heard much about this one. Is it average scoring because it is more of the same, or just because its bad? If its more of the same I'm fine with that because I enjoy those kinds of games.
Just for reference, here's the games they list with short reviews:
POSITIVE:
(1) Portal
(2) S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
(3) Medal of Honor: Airborne
(4) Team Fortress 2
(5) Overlord
(6) Shadowrun
(7) Call of Duty 4
(8) Peggle
(9) World in Conflict
(10) Crysis
(11) Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
(12) Supreme Commander
(13) Bioshock (Their Game of the Year)
NEGATIVE:
(1) Unreal Tournament 3
(2) Hellgate: London
(3) Gears of War
(4) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
(5) Halo 2 for Vista

Overlord has a sense of humour, but the control scheme leaves a lot to be desired. It's still amusing to see minions smash everything in sight when given the command.

Thumbs up on Crysis, MoH Airborne and CoD4. I've played and finished those games - quite enjoyed them.
Hellgate single player campaign was interesting for awhile but got repetitive. Didn't try multiplayer tho. -
What? UT3 is my favorite game, and Gears of War is awesome also, don't get the negative ratings for those at all.
-
I also read that gears of war got a good conversion, and saw mostly good reviews.
Guitar hero is fantastic, but it was said that the pc version didn't got conversed well. But I'm still thinking of buying -
I bought Gears of War based on other reviews, but its quite lame IMHO. I can't seem to stay interested enough to keep playing.

I didn't play Shadowrun, but I heard it was hard to get into.
I played part of Overlord and enjoyed it, although the controls seem to fit better on a console controller. MOA: Airbourne, a friend said he really enjoyed this, but I never played it.
The rest of the list is pretty much general concensus among the gaming community. I had a real hard time enjoying S.T.A.L.K.E.R. though, it just felt so buggy...and it felt so complicated! I'm sure it would be easier to play on a non-MBP keyboard though. -
hmm if you recall there was a german i think game with dwarves/gnomes (can't recall the name now) that you had to manage to find Odin's lost puppy
overlord makes that one totlly not funny
it gets really great. ah and i would disagree with ut3 rank... it's really good! i can agree with the supreme commander having positive mark. it's great to be honest!

Call of duty 4 is a great game, the single player is like watching a Hollywood film, short but sweet. The multiplayer is so damn fun.
Bioshock is one cool game, definitely worth game of the year.
STALKER, i found to be a hard yet enjoyable game, its buggy buts thats whats the patches are for.
crysis, once you get pass the novelty value (graphics etc), the game wears thin. -
Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
I agree with a positive score for world in conflict but why did Halo 2 got a negative?
