Tomb Raider - The story about how Lara Croft started her adventures, and it looks quite dramatic... and fun. I hope the game ends up being as fun as the trailers show.

    Due out March 5, 2013

    <iframe width='560' height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6-1Xn0hZsIw" frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe>

I'll leave gameplay trailers up to you so you don't get spoiled by it!

And here's an interesting history on Lara Croft games:

    <iframe width='560' height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AdOHLW_S8TM" frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe>

This might be one game I actually break out my game controller for. I guess depends on how well controls are implemented with mouse/keyboard or preferred with controller.

Wondering when this thread would be created. Reviews seem positive, I'll probably give it a go once it gets cheaper.

Looking good so far and from what i heard in IGN it has 9.1 score. Graphics and gameplay are quite good but it has horrible MP...not that i care about that.

Tomb Raider is all about SP. I hate it when they try to make MP the primary focus on games that are all about the SP game. Look at Crysis 3. Short SP campaign, but adds lots of MP modes.

I missed the $33 sale of this game on Amazon though, and I guess GreenManGaming had it for $36. :( Bah well, if it's really good, it may be worth the price of admission. But just more incentive to finish Crysis 2 then 3 before I buy Tomb Raider unless it goes on sale again soon.

Yeah, gameplay looks pretty fun (aside from the QTE's.) The story will obviously be garbage though, as they're obviously going for the "traumatized heroine that hesitantly kills to survive" in cutscenes, but gameplay is nothing but popping headshots and impaling skulls with a pickaxe :p Should be good for some laughs though

Gaming Michael Bay Style!!!! More explosions! More guns! You don't need more ideas, you just need more special effects! And while at it, just ripoff Uncharted, brain activity not required :D

I knew what I must become, a Michael Bay Uncharted film. You can do it Lara, afterall, you're a film. You just don't know it yet.

Hey, Uncharted was ripping off Tomb Raider long before Tomb Raider ripped off Uncharted. Tomb Raider was the OG Indiana Jones ripoff :D

Never played the older Tomb Raider games, the first one i got to play was Legends but to say that Uncharted ripped off Tomb Raider is like saying Call of Duty ripped off Battlefield.
Uncharted is a treasure hunting cover shooter with impressive cinematic ingame cutscenes and one of the strongest first party titles on the PS3. Seems Crystal Dynamics "borrowed" gameplay ideas from Uncharted after the last Tomb Raider game tanked.

Battlefield for example started off as a base capping shooter with vehicles and team play, while Call of Duty is basically just fast paced deathmatches like Quake.
So far i been so busy that the fast paced gameplay and short matches of Black Ops 2 seems to be the only FPS i can play atm but before i was heavily into Battlefield.

Tomb Raider games are more like Splinter Cell or Thief. Not as much run and gun as it is stealth, puzzle solving, and story. I agree cinematics are a little over the top and will be a bit irritated if it's all cutscene. But gameplay lookds decent. Guess I will just wait and see. Don't need another Aliens Colonial Marines on our hands.

Haha, yes, I think we would all expect that. That's why I was poking fun at the game, that it doesn't look like a Tomb Raider game. I've never played one, but from my own impressions of what little I've seen, this looks like a Michael Bay no thought attempt to revive the game. Creating an intriguing game with stealth, puzzle solving and story is a lot harder than just throwing in more guns, more explosions and more dramatic, cinematic cut scenes that are really of nothing, just to mask the lack of the fore mentioned.

And I think this past year has really exemplified that we cannot trust the reviews from IGN, Destructoid, Gamespot or another other major one no longer. They are just bought, paid, and bribed review sites owned by massive media conglomerates. Worthless reviews by people who are hardly gamers. And that includes Giant Bomb. Whenever I've seen Giant Bomb streaming a game or showing in game footage, I'm just horrified by how bad they are gaming, their skill with any game is just... pathetic.

    Already Pre-Loading..... :D

@HTWingNut: Aliens Colonial Marines isn't that bad, if you play it Co-op or MP. But if you have high expectations ( E3 Demo etc ) and play only the SP, then yes it's a very bad game. I gave the game a try fro 24$ and wasn't that disappointed, so maybe you should give it a try for let's say less than 10$ maybe?

I never really understood the "bought reviews" argument. Do you mean it in a literal sense, like EA pays the media for positive reviews? Or is it figurative, since the publishers pay for advertising?

Advertising. People forget IGN/Gamespot/ etc are not game review blog sites. They are Fox TV, Time Warner or some other massively corporate media conglomerate. So yes, I don't find any of their reviews to be credible. IGN is ridiculous mess. Bought by News Corp, filthiest news media. Then sold to Ziff Davis who were then bought by J2 Global. And pretty much they are in tandem with askmen.com. Publicly traded, it's for investors, not for us gamers as I see it. Whatever gets them more hits, views and ROI, the better. These sites suck.

I agree with the point that they're part of massive corporations only interested in money, but idk about being bought off. Pretty much all entertainment media operates the same way, from automotive and tech magazines to gaming websites. They need advertising revenue to operate, but I don't think there's direct "payoffs" going on. The writers and editors must have some degree of impartiality, which is why plenty of their advertisements are for products that get lambasted in reviews, and plenty of positively reviewed products don't feature adverts in the magazine/website/show.

If there's one large site out there that definitely isn't being bought off, I'd say it's Destructoid. Plenty of their reviews differ wildly from the critical consensus, though I believe part of the reason for this is to attract readers and stir up controversy. It's probably just due to differing opinion, though.

Regardless, it's just video game reviews. It's not like Consumer Reports is being paid to give glowing reviews of defective baby carriages that spontaneously combust, killing anyone and anything in the vicinity :D

the reviews are glowing so far. I only hope that the control is better than the atrocity in Underworld and yeah they can take a few cues from their competitor Uncharted regarding that aspect.

btw this is a must watch:

Tomb Raider was one of the first games to support Glide on the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics. I remember it was one of the only 3 games that supported it back when I got that video card when it first came out. I remember playing TR again twice all the way through for that reason. Oh how beautiful 640x480@16bit was back then at good frame rates. I don't think anything has been a game changer since like that Monster3D was.

3Dfx was the most defining hardware advancement in PC gaming (and console) history, and I don't think many people realize it. It was like an instant switch from analog black/white to 4k 240Hz displays with a single $300 add-in card. The change was mind blowing. I remember friends thinking I was crazy for buying TWO 8MB Voodoo 2 SLI spending over $600. Then they saw it and saved up for their own dual video card config... lol.

I think I'm going to buy this as soon as I'm done with Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 single player. Hopefully it will be on a decent sale sometime before then. It looks awesome.

Pre ordered this game. Preloaded and unlocked just a few mins ago.

Hitting "play" causes the launcher to crash. Hitting "options" also causes the launcher to crash. No way of me playing this until they release a fix.

Seems to be a lot of this so far and not a good start to 2013 for gamers.

Nvidia have reported more crashes than ATI thusfar. I get CTD from the launchers options menu or if i touch resolution on the ingame options. Im having trouble optimising the game so far. Not the best performance as of yet. I think im hoping for too high settings out of my 680m.

TressFX works but in all honesty its not that pretty. Looks every bit an expertimental system. Game itself is fantastic though. I just need to adjust the settings to enjoy it.

TressFX is a DirectCompute feature, and Nvidia was very kind to nerf DirectCompute on all GeForce to force you to buy Quadro if you need that. And all the videos I've seen of it, are contrary to your opinion, it looks great. But is the performance hit worth it? I doubt it.

Some of the movement of the hair looks nice but generally its terrible to look at. bounces unnaturally , it has an small collision box so some times bounces off invisible walls around laras head. It also hangs in a rectangle like shape in some instances.

I run the game all settings max 1080p with tressfx on average 35fps but in cutscenes fps dropped to 17 and 25. With tressfx off I'm getting average 45-50 and cutscenes fps are good . this tressfx thing eat many fps. All this at stock clocks with AA off.

Is the tressfx only available for AMD cards, or does it work with Nvidia too? I'm about to start playing.

edit: found out for myself lol. tressfx is super glitchy on my cards and it kills framerates (they spaz out from 70fps to 30fps and back) and her hair looks really weird. I'm playing without for now, hope it improves performance (I'm playing with everything on max, including aa)

double edit: turned it off, and framerates improved from 70 to 100+, and her hair looks much better now. I'm thinking tressfx works better on AMD cards.

So is the game worth the price of admission so far? From pre release game videos it looked decent but it looked like a lot of really good looking mini games packed together.

And does it play well with mouse / keyboard or is gamepad preferred? Hopefully mouse/keyboard support is good.

Initial user response sounds like it's great, but I just want to make sure it's not all flash and no substance. I'm ok with that sometimes actually. Bottom line though, is it fun?

Yeah, m/k works well for me. Anyone with a Kepler card needs to turn off tressfx and tessellation to prevent glitches and crashing. There will be a new nvidia driver tomorrow that will fix those issues. Other than that, the first hour had too many QTEs, but it gets better later on. Combat is fun and graphics are really good (not Crysis 3 or Metro quality, but more like Hitman Absolution, if slightly better in the character/animation dept.) Overall I'd recommend it, especially if you got it for $44 bucks on Steam.

i see that a lot of Nvidia owners are having issues with this game. I am playing on my 680M. the game did not crash even once, but i saw a weird multi-color triangle glitch that flashed on my screen for 2 secs after coming out of the caves in the first mission. that was it. I never had an issue after that. 4 hours into the game and i am enjoying it very much. it runs at 58 fps (locked - vsync off) 80% of the time. it goes down to 40 very rarely. here are my settings:

full - HD. Everything on max except these:

    SSAO: normal
    DOF: normal
    tesselation: off
    tres FX: off

    drivers: 314.14 beta

    Hope this helps :)

My HD 7690m did 35-40fps on normal so yes it will work on 540m.

Yeah I had that graphics glitch too lol. I reloaded the game and got a black screen that I couldn't get out of; had to hard reboot the computer. I turned off tessy and tressfx and everything runs ok now, but framerates should be higher. It runs about the same framerates as Crysis 3 on very high, and it definitely shouldn't be that demanding. Hopefully the new driver gets the optimization sorted out.

So how is it? What's your first impression? Worth buying or not?

It's a little heavy on guick time events, especially during hte first hour or two. It picks up after that and starts getting better. Combat is great, it's really fluid. The cover and dodge mechanics work really well, and the weapons and abilities are satisfying to use. There are some simple puzzles, but the solutions can be kind of ridiculous and illogical... Platforming is simpler than most games in the genre, but it works well enough. Story and characters are laughable at times too. Graphics are great, especially character models and animations, but it's poorly optimized on Kepler cards. Hopefully a new driver fixes that soon. Overall I'd give it an 8 or 8.5.
