Just for fun, I turned on just about all the Oblivion eye-candy as follows:
    All view distances 100%
    Grass ON
    Bloom ON
    2xAA
High Shadow Filtering and Water Detail
Tree Canopy Shadows, but I haven't tried grass shadows yet...

I was able to get playable framerates at about 800x600, though I'm still experimenting to try and push it a little higher...

Question is 800x600 too low on a WSXGA+ screen? I might attach my laptop to a TV Out and play Oblivion there if my LCD's non-native resolution of operation is an issue. But yeah, do you think the resolution is too low?

Well Ive run oblivion at all settings max at 1440 x 900.

and it works except when a few monsters enter the scene. Then it goes from about 15 fps to 1

so all im saying is it depends on how you want to see.

I could run oblivion at all max setting and then switch back when i fight monsters and its technically playable.

I play it on my Dell E1505 w/ ATI x1400 at 720 x 480 with most settings high and even using HDR. Shadows on grass, tree canopies and self with Low filtering, textures high, grass at full (still have a good framerate since I'm using the awesome Low Poly Grass mod) and tree fade at 25%. All that and a bit of overclocking gets me 60 FPS indoors, 30-45 FPS in cities and 17-25 FPS outdoors.

I'm perfectly happy with a low resolution as long as I can have HDR. HDR just brings this game to life. I've tried Bloom and that makes everything so dull-looking I can't stand it.

Basically, what I'm getting at here is, for me, HDR > hi res.

that sounds kinda low res for your LCD, I am an advocate of native (or pixel perfect) resolutions for fullscreen gaming... regardless of the videocard (mid-range or high-end).

As for your WSXGA+ (1680x1050), you can set the resolution to 1280x800 to get a pixel perfect resolution... to prevent the ugly stretches.

    1680x1050 ~ 1280x800 (they are both 16:10 ratio)

So with that resolution, it would be fine and much more appealing. You can turn down the AA to gain a better performance increase.

    Game On,
    -Gophn

Note: Woohoo, 2000th post... and its for Oblivion.... sweet. :D

I forgot to mention that I also get CCC to maintain the aspect ratio...if you guys think that'll help with quality.

1280x800 just doesn't get me grass...and I'm starting to grow a little fond of the stuff. I'll checkout the low-poly mod and see if that gets me anywhere...

Night2004 how playable is Oblivion at 8x6 with HDR compared to bloom?

Also, HOW can people enjoy this game without HDR? I absolutely cannot! I will lose 5-10 FPS just to have HDR I love it that much. Ha, I'm a graphics whore (but evidently not an FPS whore...lolz).

Check out Low Poly Grass here: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1479

I can't live without this mod. It's bumped me from 7-14 FPS with grass at 25% outdoors to about 17-25 FPS with grass at 100% and the grass being simplified is barely noticeable. It degrades the grass from 20 polygons to 8 and really improves framerate. Makes HDR possible outdoors which is a must for me, your friendly neighborhood HDR-on-an-x1400 whore.

    Night,

have you tried installing optimized [for mid-range and lower GPUs] mods like:
    - Oldblivion
    [IMG]
This was with an old nVidia 5600. Pretty good I should say.

I have some friends using it on their old videocards, they seem to have a much better experience than trying to tweak the default settings.

I'll give it a shot, but from what I can see it doesn't work with Shivering Isles...

Oh, it might not work on the new expansion, but I could be wrong.

Another good mod, especially for you [since you said you like grass], is this:
    Low-Poly Grass
    [IMG]
It helps increase FPS, and still lets you have grass. ;)
    ___________________________________________________
And try this for HDR effect (requires videocard to have at least SM2.0):
    Fake HDR Lighting Mod 1.1
    [IMG]
Looks pretty darn good to me.

    ^ Oldblivion :eek2:

It's still being worked on for Shivering Isles.

Gophn, nice links. These are mods I haven't heard about and I thought I'd seen them all. I've downloaded but neglected to install Qarl's because I just know it would kill me, but had still planned on just giving it a try. But these alternatives look great. Sharper textures with the SAME FILE SIZES! NICE!

I'll check out this HDR replacer but I think I might be too spoiled by the true stuff to care about framerate at this point. Have I said how much I love HDR yet?

Another great mod to boost FPS, which has gotten a lot of attention recently is:
    De-Parallaxer mod (about 26mb)
    De-Parallaxer mod ADD-ON (about 900kb)
(removes shinyness from objects to help FPS.)

As you can see, the quality still looks good.

Note: Tessource.net is moving their site at the moment, so it should be a day or so before you can check out this awesome mod.

Thats about all the mods that I have tested... that actually showed improvements in FPS and playability.

Why are you asking us? Do you like looking at it? What we think doesn't really matter, you're the one that has to play it.
