4. Command & Conquer 3 w/Kane's Wrath Expansion (PC - LAN/Multiplayer) (RTS)
5. Heroes of Might & Magic III (PC) (Turn-Based RTS) <- Can't believe I forgot about this one!
What's yours?
I have all of their soundtracks on my mp3 player too![]()
It's funny how the majority of my most memorable gaming experiences are from 10-15 years ago. Game companies haven't done a good job keeping me entertainedI think about the stories from the top 3 almost daily (that's how 'moving' they were). I buy all the top titles too.
-
1) Asheron's Call (PC) (MMORPG)
2) COD4 + MW2 (PC/Xbox) (FPS)
3) Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) (Adventure)
4) Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) (RPG)
5) Mario Kart 64 (N64) (Racing)
These are based on estimated hours of play. Some games are good but to keep me going for hours is a challenge. -
1) Grand Theft Auto 3 ---> PS2
2) Metal Gear Solid ---> PS1
3) Hitman 2 ----> PS2 and PC
4) COD 4 (Just Multiplayer) -----> Xbox 360
5) Fallout 3 ----> Exclusively Xbox 360 then Exclusively PC
Based on the impact they had on my gaming life and how memorable they were. -
1) Final Fantasy VIII ---> PS1
2) Metal Gear Solid 4 ----> PS3
3) Zone of the Enders 2: The Second Runner ----> PS2
4) Star Ocean 3 ----> PS2
5) Dragon Age Origins ----> PC -
For me it's the GTA series, Mass Effect 2 and also the early NFSs... There's too many PC games I like and I just can't be bothered to think of which ones are my top 5 now. Sorry
-
1) Half-Life PC
2) Soul Reaver 2 PC/PS2
3) Ocarina of Time N64
4) NWN2 MoB PC

- Total Annihilation
- Mechwarrior 2
- Wing Commander IV
- Bf 1942
- Crimson Skies -
- Master of Orion 2 (would be nice if it would be on Steam...even nicer if someone made a remake)
- Civ 4
- Baldurs Gate 2
- Arcanum
- Railroad Tycoon 2 -
Hmmm... in no particular order (and for the record I've only ever owned PC games so these will of course all be for the PC):
Star Wars Battlefront (and BFII) - The first game I ever bought, I still play it/both to this day
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Bought this game last winter on Steam, and I must say it was among the best $5 I've ever spent on a game just for the story and the characters
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion - I spent an untold amount of hours in high school engrossed in this game, continuing on into my first year of college just exploring and having a blast
Fallout 3 - I'm still having so much fun with this game, it's story, and the little things in the game world that add character to an otherwise mostly monochromatic land
Supreme Commander - The game that really got me interested into the RTS genre just got new life with my new laptop
Honorable mentions:
Borderlands - the combination of FPS and RPG in multiplayer is an absolute blast (along with its quirky sense of humor)
Sins of a Solar Empire - picking up where SupCom fails, this game handles all of my space RTS needs and more with the mods
Star Wars Empire at War - my first RTS game, I still sometimes play it with mods for all the different units
Starcraft 1&2 - I actually just started playing this series a few months ago so I'm reserving judgement for the time being; I place them here because of the amount of fun I've had and the potential I see for the future
Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars - Yet another RTS I still play from time to time and have fun with
Left 4 Dead 1&2 - Had to mention zombie genocide as another MP experience I have enjoyed immensely -
Diablo 2
Heroes of might and magic 3
Doom 1 and 2
FFX
FF7 -
Man, some of you are making me feel old. Anyway, in a vague order:
Mass Effect 2 (XBox 360 / PC)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
Legend of Zelda (original) (NES)
Edit: I also have to add Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) as an honorable mention.
Really, there's been too many good games to mention all of them, but that list is probably a 80% answer. The SNES is the best system for games, hands down. I also have to say that while Square was the best developer for a long time, they've gone downhill, and Bioware is far and away the current #1. -
Chrono Trigger (SNES), still the best game I've ever played
King's Bounty (PC), nice sequel to heroes of might and magic style game
World Of Warcraft (PC), yes, many would face palm at this game, but I have to admit that it's the best MMORPG out there, it has got everything right.
Warcraft III (PC), the custom map community and Bnet 1.0 is revolutionary, and this is the only non-mmorpg game I've played for more than a week and is still playing today.
Dragon Age Origin (PC), the original game is one of the most polished games I've seen.
There might be better games, but I've played so many games that I only remember the really great ones, and relative great ones I've played recently. -

Wow, this is pretty hard. I´d say
- Half Life + Counter Strike (one of the first FPS I ever played)
- Mass Effect 2 (most games by Bioware qualify)
- Fallout 3
- Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
- Pretty much every DOS adventure game ever made -
It's definitely in my 'top 5 best video game soundtrack of all time' list.
That game was my first addictive RTS. I believe it won 'game of the year' too, 11(?) years ago. -
in no particular order
- deus ex (part 1 only)
- diablo 2
- mass effect series
- baldur's gate series
- systemshock 2 -
This is a ridiculously hard question to answer! Here're some games I love:
-Goldeneye (N64) : Hands down amazing, ahead of its time, a no-brainer for this list. I don't know how many hours of fun I had with this game back in the day.
-Portal (PC) : One of the best games ever made. Innovative gameplay and some of the best black humour I've ever encountered in a game make for a winning combination.
-X:Beyond The Frontier (PC) : Probably the most immersive game I've ever played. I was Kyle Brennan, I was lost and alone in unknown space. Often called the spiritual successor to Elite, X:BTF is everything Elite was more and better. Another game that was miles ahead of its time, although the graphics don't hold up amazingly well today, it totally rocked my world at the time, more than any other game on this list. Also a special mention for X-Tension, the insanely huge expansion pack. Anyone who ever criticised this game for having a steep learning curve has absolutely no understanding of atmosphere, setting or verisimilitude and couldn't spot immersion if you hit them in the face with it. Honourable mentions here to every other game in the X series (X2:The Threat, X3:Reunion, X3:Terran Conflict) because I absolutely love them all and they all have amazing stuff in them. But X:BTF is where it all began.
-The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (PC) : I got into this game with the XBox, but the PC version is what makes it into my all time top list. This game is easily the best thing Bethesda have ever made and if its enduring legacy in a community that is still amazingly active, vibrant and growing even after 8 years isn't proof of this then I don't know what is. Morrowind's modding community is amazing and have taken Morrowind to places and heights undreamt of even by its creators. Thanks to utilities like the Morrowind Graphics Extender, and some hugely talented modders my Morrowind looks like it could have been released yesterday and contains more content than any number of ty paid "DLC" packs from... well frankly Bethesda for Oblivion (and fallout 3, I think?), but also Bioware and so many other greedy developers. It's just an amazing RPG in every way. Even unmodded I loved it above every other RPG I'd ever played. This game absolutely annihilates their sequel Oblivion on every level: I played Oblivion for maybe 20 hours, I've played Morrowind for 8 years.
-Mass Effect 2 (PC) : Even though I criticise Bioware for the so-called "DLC" they release I can criticise pretty much every single developer for this bull these days. The fact remains that ME2 standing alone is a great game with much better than average writing and I've had many many hours of fun playing it. I'm judging the game not the company or their business practices.
-Dark Forces (PC) : The original one. It was a damn good game. I might even say it was the best of the franchise because it lacks all the bad writing, fan-services and tacked on George Lucas and general Star Wars fan-writing that plagues the others. Dark Forces is simply a no-nonsense, straight-up FPS romp, and it delivers.
-Diablo 2 (PC) : I've had amazing hours of fun playing and replaying this game. Pure carnage, pure fun. And Hardcore mode is where the real men live (or die): there's nothing like getting into a tight situation in HC, knowing that you really could die. Hacking, duping and general morons kinda ruin Battle.net but there are some great communities out there.
-Starcraft (PC) : This is the best RTS ever made.
-Final Fantasy VII (Playstation) : I'm sort of reluctant to put this on my list but I did spend far more hours than can be healthy playing and replaying this game. It's a hell of a lot of fun and for my money it is The Final Fantasy.
-Ultima Online (PC) : I played this game ALOT, and though I've since played WoW and several other MMOs, UO always has a place in my heart. And it's totally different in every way to modern MMOs.
-Guild Wars (PC) : I've played WoW and I've played GW. I played WoW a lot more (so much more that I don't even like to think about how many hours I put into WoW) and ended up paying a hell of a lot more for it, but I think Guild Wars is by far the better game and not nearly as bad for your health or social life. I've played GW on and off since beta and loved it throughout and since it's free instead of pay to play it's so much easier to dip in and out. It's a hell of a lot of fun.
-Half Life : The entire franchise is great. Also Counter Strike is amazing. And Half Life 2. And Counter Strike: Source. Great great great.
If I absolutely had to cut this list down to 5 it would be:
1. X:BTF
2. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
3. Portal
4. Starcraft
5. The hardest slot to fill by far. I'm tempted to stick X3:Terran Conflict here to get out of having to pick one of the others, and I do love TC.
-Poobs -
For all of you with RPGs in your top 5, but not Chrono Trigger, have you played it? It may be a 15 year-old game, but it has the best story-line ever. It also introduced lots of new functions in the standard turn-based JRPG, like active-time battle, different combo moves depending on party members, and was the first RPG with multiple endings (there was like 20 or so of them), though the ending is the same the first time you play it, and you have to go back and replay to get the others. Oh, and the soundtrack was top-notch.
-
Picking out just five is tough! So I'll do top five for every console I have played, thought N64 has waaay more than top 5.
PC:
Half Life 2 - Unbeatable storyline combined with great gameplay

1) Cyberball 2072 (Arcade)
2) Raid on Bungeling Bay (Commodore 64)
3) Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)
4) Mechwarrior 2 (PC)
5) Fallout (PC)
PC Only
1) Mechwarrior 2
2) Fallout
3) Duke Nukem 3D
4) Master of Orion
5) Freespace -
It was my intro to the RTS genre and I wasn't good at it, but it was incredibly fun playing MP. It took me 2 months before I figured out I could use shift to queue orders and I didn't lose as badly!I believe Gamespot gave it 1997 GotY, but mostly received RTS of the year from reviewers.

In no particular order
- Super Smash Brothers Melee
- Counter strike 1.6/Source
- Pokemon Red and Silver Version
- Halo: Combat Evolved (PC version)
- Final Fantasy X -
redrazor11 Formerly waterwizard11
1) Unreal Tournament 99 GOTY Edition (FPS)//PC
2) Zelda: A Link to the past (RPG)//SNES EMU
3) Super Smash Bro's Melee (Fighting)//GC
4) Battlefield 2142 (MMOFPS)//PC
5) Borderlands Co-Op: +DLC (FPSRPG)//PC -
Megacharge Custom User Title
My top 5 in no particular order.
GoldenEye 007 - N64 (This game was Epic for it's time.)
Crysis Wars - PC (Run my own modded server. It's amazing and cheat free, best online FPS ever!)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 - PC (Online competition was amazing and highly addictive.)
Tekken 2 - PS1 (Best looking fighter for it's time, nice physics and incredibly deep style repertoire.)
Star Trek Bridge Commander - PC (Best Star Trek space sim to date IMO, the modding community basically kept it running for 7 years.) -
- Counter Strike
- Team Fortress 2
- EVE Online
- Civ II (I think)
- Battle Field 2
Two of which I used to play with my mates, two others I have found great online communities with and last was the first FPS I played at all seriously. -
Halo Reach
Most versatile MP experience in a shooter. And to put it bluntly, I'm a Halo fanboy and the series has a very rich universe and a great online community.
Half Life 2
Tons of mods and a just plain solid campaign.
Starcraft 2
The only RTS besides TA that I even like. I like the mass effect style touch to the campaign and the ridiculous possibilities with the map editor.
Final Fantasy X
Favorite gameplay of all the FFs, well I guess I liked the combat system in X-2 better actually, but the story in X is a lot better than X-2s so that makes up for it.
Resident Evil 4
To say the least, this one surprised me. I LOVE how they mix the survival horror and third person shooter genres. RE5 improved upon 4 with online coop and some cool new features, but the story in 4 was just so much better. If only 4 had Wesker in it. -
Can't choose 5...
Diablo II
Starcraft
Half-Life 2
Call of Duty (the original)
Unreal Tournament (the original)
Deus Ex (the original) -

Mass Effect series
Max Payne series
Fallout 3/Oblivion
Half-Life series/Source stuff
Back in the day:
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
Super Mario 64

Contra
Narrowing down to five is way too hard, but I'm glad that when I think about this question that these games plus so many more come to mind. I don't think I'll ever grow out of playing games. -
In no real order:
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)
Call of Duty 4 (PC)
Pretty much all pokemon handheld games (GBC, GBA, DS)
Every Super Smash Brothers (N64, GC, Wii)

There are more, but these are the ones I spent the most time playing. -

killer instinct (arcade) -
I don't think any video game music composers in the last 10 years have been able to truly capture the atmospheric sounds of classic games.
For those who enjoy video game music, make sure to check out the following, if you haven't already. These are my all time favourite soundtracks:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Heroes of Might & Magic III
3. Total Annihilation
4. Streets of Rage II (Level 1 and Level 1-2 [Bar Scene])
5. Final Fantasy III
6. Phantasy Star Online / Universe
7. Street Fighter (the one with 'Jazzy NYC' on the soundtrack)
Great soundtracks! -

It's impossible to narrow a list down to only 5 games, so here's a list of my all-time favorites in no particular order:
- Carmageddon 2
- Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed
- Half-Life
- Half-Life 2
- Diablo II
- Shenmue
- Shenmue II

Kind of sad that only one game on this list was released in the last 5 years. -
Houstoned,
Hahaha. Twin Eagle? Wow. I thought no one heard of that game, and made props to you for that one. I haven't played that in YEARS, but when I did I played the heck out of it. =) It was a challenge, that I must admit for when you are younger, I don't know about now, tho.
