3. Doom 2 - The reason some of us are addicted to FPS
4. Half Life 2 - In my humble opinion, the most absorbing environment ever created in FPS. Work of Art.

1. America's Army (yes I know a lot won't agree here)
2. Goldeneye / The world is not enough
3. Half Life 2
4. Duke Nukem
5. UT2004
6. BF2
7. FEAR -
I hate doing stuff like this because there are so many I loved.
It's difficult for me to choose CS 1.6 over TFC but I played CS 1.6 far more but that was mainly because the TFC community disappeared. TFC has yet to be challenged, in my opinion, even though many respawn FPS's have come out since. There's nothing like conc jumping across an entire map, picking up a flag then conc jumping all the way back across.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was difficult to kick off the list because I played it more than Call of Duty, however, I stopped playing CoD because I moved away and I do believe it's a better game.
I didn't get too far into the Quake series, never really interested me, however, I played Rocket Arena 3 forever. I just don't think it really fits onto this list.
America's Army is good but it could be great if it was tweaked, I never played Deus Ex that much for one reason or another, Goldeneye multiplayer was fun but I didn't really like the single player, and I played Red Faction for hours digging tunnels through the vs. maps for fun. -
Here is my list, and i don't care what others think of it
1. Operation Flashpoint
2. Counter Strike
3. Rainbow Six: Vegas
4. Medal of Honor
5. Battlefield 2 -

To this day I have yet to play a game that achieves the kind of visceral, "oh crap I'm being sprayed with plasma by Arachnotrons" kind of terror I experience when I play Doom and Doom II. The Cyberdemon in Doom is easy once you figure out his pattern, but like the end of Parasite Eve, it doesn't matter whether or not the sequence is actually ridiculously easy...
It's the fact that if you make a mistake you'll eat it.
The only reason I rank Far Cry above Doom is because the mental challenge and the satisfaction of seeing a plan come together satisfy me just that little bit more.
That, and there's some of that visceral "holy crap I'm gonna die" in it, too, when you're being flanked by a pack of mercenaries, or when there are trigents running around.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
This is hard, because are you asking for top 5 fps of all time for console or pc? Well ima break it down to both for me because I can't decide...
So here's my favorites:
Console:
1. 007 Goldeneye (What made me felt in love with console fps games)
2. Perfect Dark (So ahead of its time with everything)
3. Metriod Prime (Gamecube of course and this title is debatable since its an action adventure game)
4. Turok 2 (Much of a great upgrade of 1)
5. Timesplitters 3
PC:
1. Doom (pretty much the first one I played)
2. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (The game that got me into online pc shooting)
3. Half-Life 2 (One of the best interactive story I truly like)
4. BF2
5. Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theater (way ahead of its time) -
Have yet to successfully complete that.

1. Doom Series
2. Quake Series
3. Half-Life 2 & CS
4. FEAR
5. UT 2004
Doom & Quake made FPS what they are today, HL2 for the graphics, FEAR for the story line, and UT 2004 you just gotta love the "Headshots"! -
If you're doing Best Ever, as you said...
The Original Half-Life HAS to be #1. -
In no particular order:
Doom
Far Cry
Duke Nukem (actually thinking of the N64 version though--but it made for some great deathmatches in its time)
Delta Force series (haven't played anything past #3 though)
Star Wars BattleFront II -
1. Half Life 2
2. Far Cry - awesome jungle and beaches
3. Unreal
4. Half Life
5. Serious Sam First and Second Encounter - the only game that shooting everything was main goal
6. MOHAA
7. Call OF Duty
8. F.E.A.R. -
well im gonna do this into subcategories
Tactical: RB6:Vegas
Best story: Half Life Series (1,2, episode 1)
Best Run and Gunner: F.E.A.R.
Best Online: Call of duty (1 or 2)
Best Retro: Duke Nukem 3d
these are all personal opinions and favorites of mine. -
Well, I'll better to my part as well and dish out my top 5.
1. Half-Life 2 (and 1)
2. MoH (This for me, startet the whole WW2fps)
3. CoD
4. Unreal
5. and at last BF2142 (I know many will disagree with me here, but I think BF2142 is the best of the series)
and then there are so many others that deserve their name on the list, like F.E.A.R. XIII, R6:Vegas, and on and on and on

Seriously, the guys at id---"eh-duh", from Freud and not ID like many people think---pioneered the PC FSP genre, when they're still doing awesome work all these years later. They nurtured the genre along, from Wolfenstein 3D to Doom to Quake. Lets not forget the fun that was the Hexen series as well. The only shame is that attrition and age has pretty much rendered id to releasing games every four years, with much of the older cast departing or getting the ax. Lets hope Carmack has one more hurrah left in him before he departs into the sunset.
In contrast, I've also played some of my friend's Unreal and UT games and wondered...what the heck is this *%$#? It's like, they ripped off Quake 2 and added a ton of useless stuff into the gameplay, threw in some character attributes that I found to have no effect in gameplay due to the unbalanced nature of the weapons, and basically made it as unfun as possible. Supposedly they had better AI and scripting for the bots in the games though, so I guess that's something. I dunno, I hear they've gotten better in 2004, but I'm not gonna bother to find out. -

1. Half-Life series, for the best storyline ever
2. FEAR, because it creeped me out like no other
3. Deus Ex, it turned me on to FPS
4. BF Series(minus xbox version), reenginered capture the flag
Cant really come up with a 5th that stands out from the rest. -
best story: deus ex stands out the most, followed by the half-life series
scariest: F.E.A.R
best graphics: tricky one! but i'll go for HALF-LIFE 2
most atmospheric: the chronicles of riddick, the most underappreciated game ever
best run and gun: unreal tournament 2004, pure run and gun gameplay
best online: battlefield 2
best singleplayer: far cry's campaign is definitely the best out there, it's lengthy( expect to spend at least 20 hours on your first time through), and it's got a good amount of variety too. -
1. Half Life
2. Half Life 2
3. Battlefield 2
4. Quake 3
5. Unreal Tournament -
Doom was fantastic, I can't deny that. Half of the things which made it so engrossing have been completely ditched by modern first person shooters. I haven't played a game where there were so many secrets unless you count boxes of ammo hidden under a staircase...which I don't. There just isn't anything to compare to whole rooms of bad guys while you pump all the ammo you have into them.
I was addicted to Quake 3 and Rocket Arena by a friend but never really played the first two so I can't really comment... -
1. Half Life 1 Mod: DoD
2. Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom
3. Rise of the Triads
4. Quake 2
5. Half Life 2. -
All the Dooms
Far Cry
Half-Life 2 and Ep 1
All the Call of Duties (PC)
and occasionally Counter Strike on the lappy when im bored -
wow can't believe nobody mentioned any of the Novalogic games, www.novalogic.com, anyway:
Battlefield 2
Joint Operation:Typhoon Rising (now called Combined Arms w/expansion)
All the Delta Force Series (But I mostly played Task Force Dagger, Black Hawk Down, Delta Force 2 back in it's days)
FEAR
DOOM 3 -
Please watch your language in the forums. We have filters for a reason.

I also didn't mention DOOM.. deserves a notice, my first FPS ever -
You should be able to take 3-4 out and be able to use the rocket launcher on the last 4 while strifing... -
1.) Half-Life 2 (I love the presentation and the story)
2.) Action Quake 2 & Weapons Factory Quake 2 (Logged countless hours)
3.) Half-Life (TFC, DoD, CS)
4.) Doom 2
5.) Operation Flashpoint: Resistance -
Shame that nobody has mentioned No One Lives Forever
-
My take is more modern...
Halo (on legendary):
No other games AI is even near as fun to fight as Halo:CE. Legendary mode gives you a deep satisfaction after taking down an elite, while still feeling balanced. I played Assault on the control room once a day on legendary for over a year.
Half Life 2
It's a masterpeice on a different level than Halo, it doesn't have the replay value of the Xbox title, though it has an excellent amount of "I need to play this again" . The universe of HL2 is Epic.
Far Cry
Another game who opened up the environment and brought the AI back to the forfront. Fun to fight the grunts, fun to play, the weapons were neat, and a fresh take on the genre.
BF2
Countless hours of fun at the cost of a wacked UI. Modern combat in a semi-arcade environment.
UT2004 / Quake 3
Amazing shooters that I still play occaisionally.
NOLF
Wacky, fun, and ahead of its time. Shoot the Fez! I won this one in an online drawing. yay! -
We used to do co op on Legendary for hours on end and you would switch off after so many deaths or something like that. All I remember is using that friggin homing pistol forever because you didn't have to pop out for long to get a hit.
I didn't even play BF2's regular game, just the online. In my opinion that's all BF2 and BF2142 are good for because they are so much fun online. BF 1942 did have a challenging AI though not in individual skill but overall tactics (plus your companions were dumb as rocks).
I do have a tendency to break all games down into online play anymore... About the only games which hold my attention offline are those with storylines like Half Life 2. Even a game with a challenging AI compared to others still can't compare to playing online with real people.
Unreal Tournament and Quake barely keep my attention in the regular game but playing over the net I can become engrossed for hours. Same for the Battlefield series, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty. -
i only truly liked cs:s, and 1.6..the only FPS games to actually hold my attention for more then a week.....everything else wasnt up to par IMO.
