Other than playing wow, ive been out of the PC gmaing circle for a while now and after buying a laptop with the abillity to play almost all games again im wanting to expand my horizons.

Im already thinking about BFBC2 and starcraft 2, but what i was wondering was, do these games have single player storyline? The reason being, im going away for a week, somewhere with no internet and was wanting something I could play on to pass the time.

If not then can anyone recommend any good 1st person shooters and strategy games like dawn of war and starcraft that I might like.

    Thanks in advance.

Starcraft 2 has a good single player and you can play offline against AIs too if you finish off the single player.

Shogun 2 Total war is nice. No story but it should be able to waste tons of your time depending on how you play it.

Dawn of War 2 Retribution has a 6 race campaign. It will however feel quite repetetive since it's all pretty much the same route and map. Just with different units and speech that they do.

Go for RPG. Grab The Witcher and The Witcher 2.

Borderlands is fun. It has co-op, but you can have a good time in the single player story as well.

Im thinking starcraft 2 will keep me entertained.

The Witcher 2? Was looking at this the other day, not heard or seen much about it before, but heard great reviews.

    Might give it a try

    Anymore people

Borderlands SP is pretty boring imho, but it'll keep you busy. If you like RPGs, Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 1 & 2 have good stories as well as good gameplay. Should keep you busy for the week.

I'm playing Crysis (the original) after recently buying my alienware m14x laptop and I find its singleplayer quite awesome

you get great shooting (weapons are nicely modeled)
you get gorgeous open world yet linear missions (so its both free yet not possible to get lost)
you get variety of enemies (unlike COD or BF series, you fight soldiers, nanotech soldiers, and aliens)
you get a nanosuit (which means you can be very tactical and not just run and gun...I love camo, i feel like the predator hunting off my prey)

all in all, this shooter can pretty much satisfy all your shooting needs

I seriously love this game...haven't touched starcraft 2 since I started crysis

its kinda hard initially as you get used to the abiliities of the suit, but once you do, you feel like a killing machine!

and the graphics, if your comp can run it on max, are still better than pretty much any shooter today

I run it on high settings...but the max settings are 'very high'. at that setting, I get only 18-20 fps, which is too low.

crysis is still too powerful to run at max, at least at the resolution I play at (which is 1600x900). if you play at a lower resolution, maybe you can play at max settings.

I dont think you should think highly of BC2's SP campaign.... it's decent but totally passable

MOH has a better SP for me. ALMOST made me cry

Mass Effect 1 and 2. Both have at least 25 hours of gameplay in them if you do everything.

Good to know, only reason I was wanting BC2 was for the online aspect, but though as it has a SP aspect to, might as well add it to my week of solo-ness :(

You need Portal 1 and 2. The best singleplayer ever. The dialogue is absolutely hilarious.

Half life has a decent storyline too, a good FPS with about 20 hours with Half-Life 2 + expansions.

Metro 2033 is fun, placed in post nuclear Russia.

Just Cause 2 is a nice sandbox type game where you can spend HOURS running around blowing crap up.

Amnesia: the Dark Descent is a great one if you like to get scared (best if played at night, no lights, and headphones).

If you want a good singlepayer experience, then you need to play the games that are built for singleplayer.

If you haven't played already, Company of Heroes is a great RTS with an excellent campaign. Starcraft 2 is a no-brainer too.

For shooters, I know it's older but Half-Life 2 series will consume a couple dozen hours of your time, and download the cinematic mod for it, which updates all textures and such for a new experience.

The Witcher / Witcher 2 that just came out is all single player too if you're into that kind of thing. I got bored of the Witcher after a while though, but others seem to think it's fantastic.

    Definitely Mass Effect 1 & 2.

Try Machinarium. It's a flash based game, but extremely atmospheric.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned S.T.A.L.K.E.R. yet. Shadow of Chernobyl is one of my genre-defining games, and one of the best single-player experiences I've ever had. It'll take care of quite a few hours too.

And if you're only going to be stuck playing SP for a week, then the Bad Company 2 campaign is fine. It's not terribly long, but it's pretty entertaining. Worth a single playthrough, at the very least. The new Medal of Honor's campaign is top-notch as well.

I'll throw in another vote for Portal and Portal 2. And obviously, you can't forget the Half-Life series as well.

Most of the Call of Duty games have solid campaigns that will sink a few hours for you.

You might also want to look into some RPG's...The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion are both very good, and you'll be able to waste a lot of time on these, even without mods.

Hope ya find some of this useful :)

^Good call, the KotOR games are both pretty good, although I like the first better.

For that matter, the entire Jedi Knight series is pretty top-notch, from Dark Forces (if you don't mind the Doom-esque graphics :p) to Jedi Academy.

we have the same preferences in there, Jedi academy with mods, its a hell of a game.

one thing I could never do is how to use the force to amke the missiles or the lasers to go backwards like the AI does

    THIS.

I must also recommend Portal 2, Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, Crysis 2 ( SP only, MP is a mess ) and as referred, Medal of Honor 2010. The SP is gorgeous! Small but amazing! Action-packed, very well told story-line, and very emotional. If they had more time and more budget, with that storyline, they could have made a 10+ campaign easily.

All of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, plus the mods will keep you busy for a long time. I also recommend Cryostasis, The Void, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Crysis 2 was good, not as good as the first two by far, but still worth it. Just Cause 2 is amazing. Mafia and Mafia II are both great games spent a lot of time on both of them, the enhanced PhysX in Mafia II make firefights pretty intense. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth is a lot of fun and cheap on Steam, as well as Psychonauts. Duke Nukem 3D get ready for Duke Nukem Forever (I am lol), Blood and Blood II for some old school FPS are on GoG for cheap.

Oh yes, the STALKER games! But before playing, install the STALKER Complete mod, which is available for each of the three games. It fixes and enhances a lot of stuff, without modifying the gameplay.
