*****DISCLAIMER - NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MY, YOUR, OR SOMEONE ELSES MISTAKES*****

*UPDATE 09/30/08 - I apologize for no longer supporting this thread..but I ended up swapping out and purchasing a Gateway 7811FX. Yes, I do bash it a bit in here..but at the end of the day..it is the better value, if you're not looking to upgrade the GPU. Anyhow..feel free to PM me if there is anything I can help you with in regards to the x305.. it IS an excellent rig!

***UPDATE AS OF AUG 11TH @ 5:52 EASTERN: CURRENTLY ATTEMPTING TO SWAP THE STOCK P7350(Montevina) OUT WITH A T7500(Santa Rosa), WILL POST RESULTS ASAP***
SUCCESS! The Montevina Chipset IS backwards compatible with Santa Rosa CPU - Please see pg. 10 for results

Hey everyone, welcome! I wanted to begin a thread where we could all come together with the best, and safest methods for overclocking the 9700m GTS on this years Hottest Affordable Gaming Laptop!
    The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q701

If you're looking to overclock, hopefully this forum will provide guidance.

If you have managed to overclock, congrats!

Please, post any useful information regarding your successes, attemps, and failures.

BIOS OC'ing: I am currently working on modding the BIOS released by Toshiba in order to flash new clocks to the GPU BIOS utilizing Toshiba's BIOS release. If you'd like to review the BIOS and offer insight, Toshiba Hosts the files here:

Windows Vista is the only supported OS:
    32bit: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/qx32v120.exe
    64bit: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/qx32v120_w64.exe

-- side note -- I've tried reading the GPU BIOS off the card itself using Nibitor v4.4, and I believe the 64bit Version of Vista is not compatible. So, if anyone has 32bit installed please feel free to let me know if it works for you!

Software OC'ing: I've tried several different programs, including Coolbits, RivaTuner, ATITool, but to no avail. The only software OC'ing I've had any success with is nTune. Version 6.02 offers the flexibility of controlling the Core/Memory/Shader settings. Most, if not all previous versions of nTune don't allow the shader control..as it is linked to the Core.

    Download here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19402

Also, the new PhysX v8.07.17 Software enables the NVIDIA PhysX Engines, when combined with GeForce Forceware driver version 177.79. As of previous video drivers I am not 100% sure they will allow PhysX, let me know if you've tested.

    Download PhysX v8.07.17: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19939

Download ForceWare 177.79(Choose Vista Version, and please follow install instructions): http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=94

Using the drivers & software mentioned I have current stable gaming clocks of 629 Core/899 Memory/1564 Shader. 3dMark06 results are 13% higher than stock 7200-7300 scores and GPU temperature doesn't exceed 80 Celcius. I will keep this forum updated, and will expand upon this original post as often as possible.

08/12/08 @ 3:24 AM - Edit: Since replacing the stock p7350 with the T7500 I've ran some new tests and adjusted clock values.. All else the same as before, new stable benchmark clocks are 705 core/995 memory/1755 shader.. I kept the original 2.5 multiplier of core/shader. Runs smoothe as silk, temps PEAK at 88 celcius. Also, 3dmark06 benchmark reports a gain of 1500+ points over other posters stock benchmark results.

    Please, post your progress!

Constantly Updated: Threaders Clocks will be posted here:

Excuse me? I never made false statements regarding any marks. I did tweak Nvidia Control Panel settings, and used video drivers provided by an outside source.. As previously mentioned, I settled with the 175.90 from Toshiba to maximize performance. Since, I've done research and to be PhysX capable, these are the only drivers I've found compatible. In addition, I've realized that the x305 is in my opinion, far exceeding the capabilities of the 7811FX. Hence, I lost the 15% restocking fee and re-purchased this computer! Thank you Best Buy :)

Your stock scores are posted "WITH PICTURES" right here stating it was a score of 8250 http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3687429&postcount=43
and here is you defending that score http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3721057&postcount=147
and now quoted from your original post your stock scores are now
and in case you can't do the math 7300*.13=949+7300=8249. Aren't numbers fun?

Also who the heck returns a laptop one day pays a 15% restock fee the next day and then attempts to justify it it by saying his weaker laptop exceeds the capabilities of a laptop with a faster cpu,gpu higher resolution screen and almost half the thickness of his laptop?

Actually.. the 15% restocking fee was paid when I returned it originally. And what is your point? My choice of spending money shouldn't be your concern. As previously mentioned, I originally tested 6-7 drivers as well as PhysX on the x305. The stock 175.90 drivers yielded best scores out of all of the drivers at that point. I'm no software programmer, just someone looking to assist and offer advice based off of my, and others' experiences with the x305. Do you have any valueable information to add to the thread? Can you advise us on the best drivers for OC'ing? Would you care to offer your laptop to test a BIOS that may brick it? I can appreciate where you're coming from.. however I think you're way off base with your assumptive insults. By the way, what's 7200 * .13? Who cares! This thread is meant to offer advice and solutions to anyone who may be looking to achieve the most out of their GPU, without ruining it. If you have any beneficial input relating to the topic, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Helping people OC is one thing. Offering false information, or "lying" about past 3DMark scores is absurd.

It's this simple- You say your "stock 3DMark score" was 7200-7300, yet in another thread, you posted how your "stock 3DMark score" was 8300. Big difference.

Keep in mind, you got 7200 stock at 1280x800. I got 7201 stock at 1280x1024. (8800M GTS) Your accusations of this being better than the Gateway are just foolish, and biased, which is absolutely unnecessary in a "helpful thread".

There's no way of gaining 1000 points in 3DMark06, just by tweaking CP, or changing drivers. I've tried about twenty drivers(from three different sources) in last two months (having stuttering in GOW) an noticed difference less than 200 points. And one which give me highest score was actually stock driver.
BTW PhysX it's not supported by 3DMark06.

Hey KGANN, Just wondering if the 3DMark2006 score that you got of 7201 stock at 1280 x 1024 is that with the stock 1440 x 900 resolution of your P-6860FX ?? God Bless :)

Very good question JD, maybe he had it external, my X305-701, seems to run much better hooked up to an external. I dont know what it is about the stock display that would bring performance down so much, compared to external display, perhaps driver compatibility? I really wish Nvidia would get on the ball, and update their driver algorythims....

    I completely agree.

My opinion that the x305 is better than the Gateway is based on the ability to easily upgrade not only the HDD, RAM, and CPU.. but thanks to the disassemble performed by cq842000 it also seems the GPU is very upgradeable. The Toshiba offers the flexibility to make future investments to stay ahead of the Gateway. Hopefully with the new higher resolution screen of the 7811FX, it doesn't drag down the GPU too much! A gaming laptop is not an investment because you expect to not be able to upgrade most components.. you know it's not likely to offer a return of more money than you put in.. it depreciates faster than a new car! Typically, that's why people purchase either a)the fastest, most up-to-date, maxed out, most expensive rig or b)the easiest to upgrade on their own. Well, based on your experience, how easy is it to upgrade the GPU on your Gateway? Isn't the GPU the reason a lot of us have upgraded entire computers in the past? So, if I have the ability to save an additional $1500-2500 by only upgrading the GPU in the future and not having to purchase an entire console, to me that seems like the better investment. Thank you Toshiba. :)

it is completely false to assume your GPU is upgardeable just by looking at it. I highly doubt it is an MXM type card in the first place, Toshiba is not one to use that form factor.

While the rest of your post is true, any of it claiming your GPU is upgradeable is at this point false, you have no definitive proof that it is true.

Stop lieing and spreading misinformation, it is not helping new people that come to this forum, who dont know any better.

I completely agree, and from the looks of it, with a little ingenuity, and a good helping of some elbow grease, I am quite sure that not only what you mentioned is upgradable, but the cooling options as well, there is room there, and the design and layout seem to open a window of compensation for people that would like to modify this configuration... now where to find the man power(albeit pioneers) to build and test the multiple options available....I think that's where the community could truly shine.

The gpu is might be upgradeable, but only to whatever gets put in another x305 model. By the time thats even possible it would cost atleast 800-900$ to do it and by the time you do that, you could have just bought the 9800m gtx model to start with......also the Ram is not upgradeable, the system already comes with 4gb of ddr3 ram. There is no faster ram that the unit supports and you can't add more because 4gb is the max. Beside the HDD, every single possible upgrade to this laptop would cost 269-900$ and just one of those upgrades would have made buying something else a better deal and two of them would get a you a brand new computer.

Actually it wouldnt be false to assume that the GPU is upgradable... Is it removable (not integrated)? Does it use a standard mounting configuration(bolt pattern)? Does it use a proprietary technology, that is exclusive only to one brand? Are there presumed to be future models available that will use the same designs? I'm sure if you think hard enough in your mind of minds, you'll see that there are many reasons to assume that the platform gpu would be upgradable. Or you could enforce your closed and narrow spectrum of reasoning and completely deny that the design is there, regardless of whats staring you in the face....but to each their own...

That's pretty funny...and it does scream steal me, however, disappointment seems to be subjective, because after a demonstration, to my closest friends, who also pride themselves at finding added value under obscurity, have since decided to return or sell their current notebook with intent to buy this particular model. As well I must say if your opinions are negative and without base, I ask that you reverve them for interior thought. How could you Insult this man for exerting his opinion, then not expect to be shot down when you enforce a double standard?

Doh! I was replying to your comment that this isn't a MXM Card.. I may be wrong, but doesn't Nvidia advertise how the new higher end 9xxx series are all MXM cards? A new MXM, 3.0 is what they've called it. And MXM 3.0 is *very* upgradeable based on what I've seen. May void a warranty, but at that point it's probably not your first concern anyhow.

Now, since ya changed up the post.. This laptop definately doesn't scream "steal me!" - based on a lot of your opinions you wouldn't EVEN steal it. So, flaming, gawdy, and glossy may have a benefit to matte black and boring.

these *opinions*, are more statements, like I said, trying to post false information and trying to back it up makes it confusing for new members, it is not helping at all, until any claim in this thread has definitive proof other than your opinions, or by *looking at it*, it is not true.

I insult this man, because apparently the laptop was bad enough to return it 1 day go back and buy it again after paying 200$ in restock fee's and also lieing about the scores of this laptop. If Dtwn and I hadn't questioned him the first time and others had shown that laptop wasn't as powerfull as a 8800m gts, many people would have gone out buying what they thought was a superior gaming laptop. cq842000 you have actually shown ownership and pride in your system, but E-wrecked has done nothing but spread misinformation and to be honest I have high doughts that he even owns the laptop anymore.

Thanks, I do proof-read...but until someone can find proof that what is being said here is false, I encourage you to enforce your standard as well....****ed if you do, ****ed if you dont... I only stated what I could see with my own two and a half eyes, nothing more, nothing less...

P.S. if i see within a notebook that there is a SATA port, within a form factor 3.5" HDD bay, and all the dimesions seem to point towards being able to house and utilize a 3.5" HDD, yet there is only a SATA 2.5" HDD, would it be wrong to assume that there is indeed room and possibly support for a 3.5" HDD?

Even so that may be, but he is entitled to his opinion, until someone can prove this man's word as false, then it stands as true.... I just beleive that I went to another country to fight for every man's freedom of speech(and even to lie, as it were), and was wounded in this pursuit of his freedom to do so... so why wouldnt I stand behind his right to speak (and maybe to lie)? It's his thread, and as such, noone has to be here, I dont see any advertisements on any known websites that this is the definitive find of the century pertaining to mobile gaming, so why treat it as such?

And... as far as I have seen, the motherboard on a laptop that supports SATA drives, already has both the data and power ports in the slot, where as on a desktop mobo requires the wires seperately to accomodate different case configurations, so to answer your question yes the drive still appears to need the power slot in a notebook, only it's built into the connection port rather than requiring a seperate connection...

Out of curiosity, do you understand what bwheoxn was saying in his original post about him posting incorrect 3dmark06 scores?

I'm not debating about the upgradeability of the X305 and so on and so forth, just the original issue.

Nothing but spread misinformation? I've posted what, 42-45 times since I've been on this site? In total? Half of which were dealing with OC'ing my old 8600m GS. Since, I've explained how this computer kicks the crap out of the Gateway. And that's MY opinion, you can attempt to dispute me when you have proof that it DOESNT. Buyers remorse lost me $230 actually(rounding up). And on a side note..do you know if the x9000 works in the new 7811FX? Ahh.. well, I opened up your friend dtwn's eyes with the Intel Specs after he told me I was spreading misinformation. So, how about you quit spreading PERSONAL misinformation, which can be much more damaging than someone spreading COMPUTER information. Check yourself, you've got a bad attitude. As I said before, if you don't have anything beneficial and pertaining to the thread, then please don't waste your time posting here.

By the way..is the third pic a bit much?

You do realize, as I've told you several times, that I never directly accused you of spreading misinformation. In a later post about the issue, I found information that both backed your and my point of view up. And if you looked at my reply, I also mentioned that I asked two notebook retailers about using the X9000 in a Montevina chipset.

    The answer I was given

One of them tried it in two machines
    It fit.

However, one wouldn't work, and the other would only work for a little bit. Unfortunately, he didn't specify what a little bit was, so I don't know either. He did mention, however, that it might work for other models, since they used different motherboards.

Why not try fitting the T7500 in your X305 as you suggested? I think that's a great idea.

I do understand what he was saying in his post about ghosted scores, but there is no definitive proof yet, that his score was ghosted, too many variables. I've seen what this Notebook can do with gaming, and I love it, I am very proud of my purchase, and fully intend to be one of if not the only pioneering soul when it comes to upgrading, trial and error, as well as advice, when it comes to this particular model...I digress however, and I understand that sometimes, no matter how outlandish or untrue some claims appear to be, there are extenuating circumstances, that prove the statement true, though usually in hindsight...

Okay, just wondering. I agree that there are variables and as I've told you before, I don't think the X305 is a bad machine.

If you like it, then enjoy it as much as you can. It's your purchase after all.

That is a great idea Dtwn....I would love to know the outcome. Though I'm pretty sure, that as new as this chipset, and by proxy this notbook, is, it just might not support it yet...However, just like Chuck Norris, "I'm waiting".

That is a great idea.. my ONLY hesitation, if I ruin the T7500 taking it out of my other lappy and putting it in here, then I lose my other computer. Or vice versa with the p7350. Tell ya what.. I've got some errands to run. Whenever I get finished, I'll tear down both rigs and swap the CPUs in this one. I know the 7350 won't work in my other comp. So.. let's see what happens!

Excellent, i am very excited to see how it performs :)

Here they only sell this laptop with 9800 GTX and its like 4000 bucks which is way too much for me. :(

Okay, the first test I'll run is the DX9 test, and for this test I have selected 1440*900 resolution @ 60hz, no MSAA, Texture, shadow, and overall quality is set to super high...this game is actually quite beautiful...
