    Hi all.

I picked up a toshiba satellite m70 with an ati mobility radeon x700.

now with 1.8+g processor and 1g ram + 256 card i thought it would be perfect for my gaming.

I can run hl2 full speed without a burp. :)

For some reason though world of warcraft is a total terror. I get what i assume is artifacting all over the screen.(chunks of the graphics distorted and texture bars all over).

i've tried every possible drivers out there..modded non modded. reinstalling windows , reinstalling wow.

i finally got it to work by underclocking my card to 160/145. Which defeats the purpose of having a 256 card. These settings are to low for the game to be smoothly played. To me this looks like a heat issue that cannot be corrected as the are no tools that work on this system.

My question is have i got a lemon?

bad news is it was a floor model but good news is its still under full waranty.

Or is this just a bad choice for mobile gaming?

Thx for taking your time to read this and offering any suggestions :)

I have a 256MB ATI X700 in my laptop. What are your stock clocks? Mine are 350 core, 330 memory. I have had no problems with gaming on it, over five months now, pretty much every game out there. . no warcraft though.

I agree, you shouldn't have to play on unplayable clock settings to get the game to run. Have you tried any other games?

Quake4 is even worse. i tried reinstalling the cat 6.3 drivers using dhmod and was getting the same results.
also noticing black lines showing up on my desktop off/on. as well as red lines through my screen when in the bios settings.

I'm starting to think this thing is dying a slow death.

hopefully when i take it back they will give me one that works.

    Hey Skoobie,

Too bad for you mate, that notebook sounds superb for games. Especially the X700 256 with high clocks...

Let us know if you fix it.

Sounds a lot like a heat issue. Have you checked your GPU temp yet?

It sounds like your memory is corrupted or something similar on the card. If you are having this many problems, send it in. Take advantage of that warranty. ;)

Eeeeeeeeeek, sounds like what chazman said, or maybe they didn't put the heatsink on properly, but this does sound like a hardware problem.

Send it in and if they ask if you've meddled with overclocking or something like messing with thirdparty drivers, just act dumb.

"What was that sir? A what? Overclucking? Thirdparty drivers? I don't have a driver's permit yet. I just see white dots everywhere."

    :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

I am also have an M70-SR6 with the same specs as Skoobiedawg. I am also having a heating issue. I used my M70 for just under two weeks and it seemed to cook itself to death. When running games it would get extremely hot, to hot to touch. Then I had the same problem as Skoobie. I was playing Civ 4 when the screen went crazy. I had black triangle flashing all over my screen. This error got worse over a period of 2 day. By the end of the second day I whenever I started my computer with 25 seconds I would get the blue screen of death showing I had a ati2dvag error. I took my notebook back and exchanged it for one of the same model. It seems ok and I have had it for 12 days with no errors............yet. When I run games the new notebook gets extremely hot. I used a laser thermometer to deter that the normal running temp is approx. 33 degree's celcius. When playing games(need for speed: most wanted at max settings was the test game) the temp jumped up to approx. 50 degrees. I called Toshiba and they dont have a clue if this is too hot so im not to sure what to do. Any Advice would be appriciated.

Uh oh, another owner of the same laptop with the same problem. This isn't a good sign, maybe a design flaw.

You guys should post under your Toshiba manufacturer section of this site and see if any other M70 owners are having the same problem, maybe they have a fix for it.

    Cheers,
    Mike
