Hi, I just recently purchased (in the last month and half) a laptop that can actually play games at a decent setting. While I am no stranger to gaming at all (Xbox, PS3, and Single Player PC), I have never really dived into PC Online gaming. To be honest, I find the online pc gaming space to be a bit intimidating. I mean, when I play on my 360, I am either playing with my friends, or I just quick connect, and there I am playing with a bunch of people.

The idea of picking servers is what is making me take pause. Is there any kind of etiquette about picking a server? I mean the last thing I want to do is jump into someone's game, and totally stink up the place. Or am I thinking too much about it, and I should just jump in. Is there anything I should look for in a server? If it helps I just bought the Orange Box, and would like to play a bit of Team Fortress 2, and I also got World In Conflict, Empire:Total War, and Battlefield 2.

Besides the question I just posed, any other tips or advice for someone just getting into PC online gaming?

TF2 is an easy going game. From time to time you'll find some idiots in the game who will get pissed at you for being new and not knowing every little tactic, but if that happens, just ignore them and have fun anyway. Just pick a server and have fun, they're usually run by clans or other such places so it's a constant stream of people coming and going. Join a large server where your ping is really low.

For most onlines games that have been out for a while, expect to have at least some people angry at you for not knowing the game properly and not being good.

That being said, you should still be able to find plenty of games/servers to play in as long as it is still a decently popular game.

just make sure you learn the controls, i hate it when i'm playing COD4/sabatoge and the person doesn't even know how to plant the bomb even tho they're level 55.

When i first started i just picked a random server and then once i found what i like (maps, game types) i just searched those. Now i found a set of servers that i like and only play on those.

Every gamer has to start somewhere. Just make sure to give them a heads up that you're new and ask for any tips/strategies. PC gaming isn't too much different from console gaming, so you should be fine

just jump in and have fun.

who cares what other people think/say. you will learn the ropes and you will have more fun when you get better.

everyone is new at some point, so don't worry about it. if you play FPS games, while you are dead, look at the people at the top of the score charts and watch how they play etc. look at where they throw their flash/frags etc.

it will give you a some good knowledge of different techniques, as well as tips on maps etc.

Stick to a couple of maps initially till you get to know them really well. Half the battle is learning the chokepoints, campspots and hiding places. Even if you don't know the map, follow a few people and cover their back or assist them, they'll appreciate it unless they are some "lone wolf" 13 year old with an oversized ego.

This is really true with TF2. Some corners you just know if you walk around you're either going to get picked off by a sniper or blown up by a Demo. :)

Are you trying to get him complained at? The best thing to do is keep moving! If it's an online FPS, keep up the pace, move fast, jump around if needed and don't give the enemy time to target you, or predict your actions.

The whole server browser aspect of PC gaming is the best. It's much more fun to be able to pick and choose which match your joining and know what to expect out of that server's community, and if you like it, you can save the server to your favorites, and become a regular at the server. You should never worry about interrupting someone's match because that's what they have a public server set up for. People run servers because they want random people playing in them, to build a community of regulars.

For FPS games I would say it does not matter. Just jump in and get your feet wet. Now for RTS type online game I would either create my own game or look for games with the subject "noob game" That way your playing with other people who are not to familiar with playing that particular game online.

Make sure to check out forums for your favorite games. Possibly invest in a headset and look for a gaming group to join who uses Ventrillo or Team speak. Try to get involved.. I've noticed games are much more enjoyable when you have a few people you constantly play with and chat with.

Last tip.. :0) Be carefully.. Online multiplayer is very addicting lol! If you have a g/f warn her before hand.. you might not be available to her as much lol

just jump into the FUN and don't mind others postings ... no matter what ... u'll be called either noob ... or if u're too good then a hacker/cheater ;)
Find servers you like and just get involved, there might be clan dedicated servers and you might get kicked out from there soon. http://www.game-monitor.com/ is a good place to find servers where is players with the game type you like to play

Thanks for the tip, but I can't stand camping, especially when I am the person doing it. I have to move around. Besides it has been my experience that camping involves sniper weapons; which to be honest, I would be better off finding out where the person I want to kill lives, and then spit on them, than I would using a sniper rifle.

I was thinking about playing some World in Conflict Online, I will look out for "noob friendly games"

I have a wife, and suprisingly she seems to be very.... accepting (is that the word) of my gaming in general. She bought my a PS3, so she has to be somewhat cool with it. Besides I work second shift, and I play after work, when everyone is in bed, so it hasn't been too much of an issue.

Just wanted to say thanks everyone for the tips, I will try to use some of them. Now I just have to overcome my total lack of time during the day to get online and play.

Still is! Too bad I can find one of the disc, otherwise I'd install it and play.
