Game is looking sexy.

With all the goodies and such they better make this game playable on a portable rig.
My fear is that max settings might require dual gpu desktops.

Wow, I watched the entire video. It was all of the favorite parts of the orginal Rome, customs battles and other things. The min. specs are said to be the same of Shogun 2 but I prefer to play it to the max, this beautiful game deserves to be played at max settings. I will upgrade my gpu just to play this game. I consider it worth it. I cant wait for the release.

What's your strategy for Total War games? I have problems with strategy.
If I go on the offensive, keeping formation and ready for combat, while moving, my units get fatigued and it's very micro-managing.
I find I can get caught unaaware by a cavalry.
If I go on defensive, I'll usually win, but it takes too long for the enemy to reach me. Plus I'm just sitting duck to cavalry.
I really hate cavalry.
So what's your strategy? What I would really like to know, best strategy to defeat an oncoming cavalry, Shogun 2 or the upcoming Rome. You see cavalry breaking and running towards your units, what do you do? In Total War: Empire I recruited rangers and just mowed em down long range.
- Shogun 2, I havne't played much since I just don't like the idea of having to deal with the darn cavalry! If I knew how to defeat them without having my units panicking and fatigued, I think I'll give it a whirl again. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
for cavalry the idea is to always leave your cavalry on your flanks, it gives them more mobility to attack or defend you on the battlefield, that is if you are playing against the AI, if its a good human opponent that probably wont work. One thing that I always do is to kill the general and them the cavalry first, if I get higher mobility I can kill his artillery, so I will have long range and mobility dominance
the whole idea is to get them to do the things you want them to.
For example in a battle in NTW I was outnumbered by 3:1 in an attacking position. I think I had 3 pieces of 6lbs foot cannons, with 3 militia, 3 line and 2 gun mounted cavalry, one could fire mounted the other was a dragoon unit, I divided those in 2 areas
I left napoleon with the artillery in a vantage point, with 2 militia, i destroyed the enemy artillery, bombarded from afar, drawing them in, while I did that, I used my foot troops to attack the enemy reinforcement (1 dragoon with 2 lines) and the rest I moved to flank the enemy
I was going to get smashed if I let the enemy attack me, specially since he had 4 dragoons, with mostly line in a "30" unit stack (20 his own 10 reinforcements).
Battles in TW is always about positioning depending on how you deal your cards militia can beat regular. I always prefer to draw them in to some place and attack his force divided, mine will be too, but several skirmishes in a battle are a good thing for you if you get your troops accordingly to the enemy strength on that skirmish -
Brilliant, easier said than done. I'll keep those tips in mind when I try TW games again.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
in shogun 2 I use tons of archers, they more than pay themselves. My usual stack composition is 4 cavalry, 1 general, 8 ranged (6 archers 2 guns), the rest is infantry, with at least 1 pike unit, preferably 2, otherwise you will commit a lot more your cavalry
I usually prefer heavy shock cavalry, the tactics there is very simple:
Divide the army into harassing units, with cavalry protection, so I usually deploy 3 archers per group, with the cavalry in the middle supporting the forces, those are usually with 1 or 2 units of infantry, that leaves me with a 3rd group that is the ambush group, while Im drawing the forces I want to kill, I will get them to the ambush group, which is composed with morale killers gun units (it can be arty it doesnt matter) and the infantry that is being pumped up by the general, so they last longer, in the end I do either encircling or just flanking maneuvers
The idea is always to only lose around 10% or less of your army against the enemy, replenish takes a long time and they always have more stacks than you. There is one guy at youtube that he is better than me, search for surreal beliefs lets play, this guy is not one of the best, but he is good, I dont think green eyed devil posts online his battles, but he kicks the lower part of my canister every time, we do have some photos of him playing ntw, great strategy
PS: those strategies as you can see need a lot of micro, you cant avoid it, they were worse before when basically it was a difference of life and death to activate abilities -
I think strategy depends on the Total War game. In particular, in Medieval II, heavy cavalry are dominant. Knights can smash through most infantry with relative impunity, even in a direct frontal assault. In Rome, charging into infantry with cavalry in a frontal assault is very risky business and often ends poorly.
I've been playing Rome: Total War on VH/VH, and though I'm not particularly good (losing 10% or less of my army is pretty rare; it's more like win 75% of the time, by what margin varies), I have found some ways to deal with pesky cavalry.
My main precaution for cavalry is usually trying to keep my own cavalry near my flanks so that if they try to flank me, my cavalry intercepts their cavalry and slug it out. If I can get some infantry there to help out, I usually win, but the basic idea is to weaken their cavalry enough that even if I lose, their cavalry are no longer such a threat to my infantry.
If I suspect a frontal attack by enemy cavalry (whether directly in the center or on the flanks), I'll put spearmen (auxilia) up front instead of legions as I (usually) would for infantry. I've also found that, especially against chariots, it's useful to have a second line of infantry - chariots in particular can break through one rank fairly easily, but if a second rank is nearby to close on them, you can inflict some losses.
Horse archers (cavalry auxilia and mercenaries) are also useful for keeping enemy cavalry engaged and away from your infantry.
Ideally I'd have some mercenary hoplites, but that isn't always possible. Mercenary hoplites + chokepoint = win against cavalry.
If cavalry are threatening to break through to the ballistae, I'll have the ballista-ers retreat back to safety until either the threat is over, or the battle is lost, at which point hopefully they're far enough back to escape.
I still lose battles, in no small part due to the low morale on VH/VH, which seems to be more severe than in M2TW. My other weakness was bull warriors from Spain, who owned several of my armies. I finally came to the conclusion that I either needed to shred them with arrow/javelin fire (and lots of it, as they are armored), or flank them and peel them like an onion to defeat them.
Karamazovmm's strategies are probably better. But mine aren't very micro intensive. Depends on what you're going for. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
well mine are very micro intensive and until you get the grip of commanding almost every individual unit its going to be very though and tiring, it gets worse when you enter the realm of ntw upwards, you can face 2 stacks at the same time, not the limit of 20 vs 20, but it can go from 40 vs 20 and thats where I usually lose if I dont coordinate properly (meaning killing the first army with all the firepower available in a massive assault and then deal with the other stack, those battles are usually 30-70% army loss ratio)
I found that in rtw if you are playing with the romans you have to be prepared for:
1) catas, though your heavy calvary is just slightly worse
2) bersekers, mostly on mods, specially on Europa Barbororum, those guys dont die at all, and facing the Sartre stack is pretty much an exercise on existencialism, or basically the idea of a full 3 silver chevron balanced army, buffed with the most awesome AI general
3) chariots, they can kil your heavy infantry with impunity.
Basically my rooster for the romans is 1x general, 4x heavy cavalry (praetorium), 8x urban cohorts, 3x javelin throwers, 4x archers, this is the golden army, it takes too long to make and is a game breaker, nothing can beat it with adequate strategy
usual is, 1x general, 4x heavy cavalry (legionaire), 8x legionaires, 3x javelin, 4x archers, still game breaker when you reach silver chevrons
Your heavy infantry is to be supported by the light, which is the javelin, harass before they meet your line, with arrows and javelins, after that pincer move, with the same light infantry, they will break. Cavalry on the sides to kill the other cavalry, or if its the chariot, support cavalry with javelin
I dont play much m2tw, rome was my favorite and I usually played it with mods, so my strategies are more for those, simply put on EB I wouldnt even hire archers, rooster is 1x general, 2x auxilia cavalry (for shock purposes), 8x legionaires, 6x javelins (depends on who Im facing, if its elephants bersekers up to 8x), 2x slingers, 1x high damage light infantry like the rhoomparoi (thracian 2 handed swordsmen), or with high piercing value, sometimes I just go with 1 slinger and raise the this one for 2x
I usually play with macedon or bactria, preferably bactria, its a very though challenge, you are cornered between 3 powerful factions, saka rauka, seleucids and the indian rebels (they do have the best archer in the game and one of the best light infantry available)
But its good to exchange strategies, have you played ntw or etw? I love the scope of etw, but the battle mechanics are better on ntw -
Guess I would have to go for a 2960Xm to get to some playable level, what do you guys think?
-
check out "heir of carthage" on youtube. He doesn't contend to be the best out there, but he has some great tips to get you thinking about a move "diverse" set of strategies/tactics.

pre order is up, my CC is not liking this -
Sweet! Im a huge Total War fan, and I still play Medieval II along with Shogun II. I just hope there isn't a realm divide mechanic in this game, or if there is that is done a bit more intelligently. I really enjoyed Shogun campaigns up until realm divide. I didn't mind that it was there, but I wish it was toned down a bit. It just seemed too scripted and the diplomacy hits were predictable and expected every campaign. I would rather the AI be more aggressive and intelligent throughout the entire campaign, instead of them all ganging up on you at a specific milestone. Factions that were at war with one another all of the sudden were allied against you, and even your strong alliances were in tatters after a few turns. I eventually started using a mod that toned it down, but it never got it right.
So I hope that the realm divide (or civil war) mechanic is better implemented in this game and possibly scaled for difficulty levels. What do you guys think? -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
well realm divide had a very specific purpose, to create challenge to the end of campaign and to simulate the dissension that had spread at that time
indeed you could predict the realm divide and prepare for it, I as well hope that they do this in a more unpredictable manner. I think they will use the new families thing that they are implementing.
What I find annoying is the lack of details about gameplay
btw regarding the AI they said that they are unifying it, no more strat map and battle ai, I hope that solves the issue of uncoordinated and badly balanced armies
EDIT: you know one thing that I loved? look at how far to the east the map goes! it stops at india! Im so hoping that someone mod Bactria in! -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
and we now have rally point 13! with some good info on how the campaign map works!
I want a screenshot of the map! damn it!Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

I like the new army system, it really is something of an evolution of the FOTS system, we will see regarding the changes to the map, at least in rezzed they will comment more about it -

here is som more info and eye candy on the game, not really all the new info we have on it, not nearly

pre-ordered!
kinda worried though if my 485m will be up to task -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
check those strategy informer articles, they have very valuable info, but disregard the 40 unit armies, its not going to happen I dont know why they put that in there, which is unfortunate, we still can have 80 VS 80 battles, or more if you mod the game, now that should bring your cpu and gpu to its knees -
I want to play Rome 2 finally! release it already!!!
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
I feel the same way, I have pre ordered already, waiting anxiously for rezzed to see some more new info

generals mmo? nah, planetary anihilation, yes I already backed that, but incredibly Im not that psyched about it, rome 2? bring it and I will cry because of my very low fps
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?605350-Official-Q-amp-A-Post-E3
GREAT Q&A
DAMN! I WANT IT NOW!
1-4 players in battles per side, that means 80 VS 80 battles, calculating an average of 160 men per unit = 25.600 men/women per battle, since mods usually put 300-500 = 48.000-80.000 men/women
this is so gonna choke every non XM/MX and overclocked with the 780m in sli also OCed at ultra... actually I think that wont be enough to have 30fps min in those battles
well its kind like shogun 2 now, but with fots, you have to have artie units, those cannons are the the key to make me survive in a 20 units VS 80 units battles -
But yeah, I imagine RTW2 has fans already planning out their upgrade path. I know I am. -
this is the only reason im even considering a 780m.
otherwise im good with my 485m -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
this is so going to make me cry, I will surely have terrible fps, much like I do now on those larger battles, hell I want broadwell, maxwell, and the new amd to come right now
you are complaining with a quad and a 485m? im going to play this on a p7350 + 4gb + 4670m -
hehe well yeah. i can still run shogun2 maxed out w/o aa when using darthmod.
that carthage gameplay video was just scary though. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
tell me about it, I was like
talking about features I like the new type of battle, its the one we saw in the E3 videos, baggage train.
when you are in a forced march instance if you are attacked you will have to defend your baggage trains, i.e. capture points
Im really intrigued with the new familiy/council thingy, I want to see more about it
I like the new province style and the new sea/river regions, I find that this was the way to go since empire, and I really liked that game, with its scope and size, not the AI
Im curious to see this new victory types that they have, they mentioned the cultural victory, it was won by the iceni on their first full campaign run
now that leads me to this,
have they drowned the other nations?
