So i set a +100mhz oc on the core in afterburner just to start things off. I run msi kombustor (tessellated spheres x64, 1080p, AAx8) for about 10 minutes without a hitch. Temps top out at 74 and rest at 72-73 with no throttling. So next i try a game. I fire up dark souls 3 and not even 5 minutes into the game the video driver crashes. I've already unlocked the voltage slider but can only get an increase of 25mv. Not sure why i can make it through kombustor for but can't play ds3 for more than 5 minutes.

    Specs: Sager NP9758
    GPU: 980m
    CPU: i7 6700
    RAM: 8GB
    AC adapter: 220w (can buy a 330w)

What do you guys think i should do. Should i flash with a modded vbios to fully unlock the voltage and power limiter, get a more powerful ac adapter since 220w might not be up to the task, or could have just had bad luck in the gpu lottery. As far as temps go i just ordered some ic diamond paste so that shouldn't be a problem.

Lottery mostly. My stock 980m 8GB [MSI GT72] can bench to +113/+92, but my gaming OCs are +0/+92, +56/+92 and +87/+92 as games get hit and miss after that.

Keep in mind that synthetics like FurMark, Kombustor, and OCCT aren't a good test of overclock stability. You'll often find, as is the case here, that what's stable in those tests is not stable in actual games.

They are also power viruses and not healthy for your GPU if run for an extended period of time, many people have killed their cards that way.

Yeah real-world testing, like playing games, are best for determining OC stability.

You can get nvflash from TechPowerUp.

Will a heavily modded skyrim do? Also will the prema bios let me set a custom fan curve because the stock one sucks?

I don't think you can change fan curve, but the boost clocks are stable and don't throttle.

Older versions will work. Update to newer versions and newer kernel builds of w10 will force users to update to MSI AB.

Laptop fans are not controlled by the GPU itself. They are controlled by the EC and the vBIOS has no code relating to fans as you would find on a desktop GPU. The way you change fans curves on laptops is by changing the values in the EC. The OEM Nazis are very overprotective, to the point of being totally silly, of their proprietary EC filth, so finding any information on editing the EC is as rare as unicorns and leprechauns. Seems they love to play god more than having satisfied customers with machines that function correctly.

You work with prema right? Could you tell me how to get bios mod? I looked at his websites but they don't tell you where to get it.

If your machine was not purchased from a @Prema partner, the only way you can secure it is on an exception basis directly from Prema. His firmware mods are no longer available to the general public. That may change in the future after current models become obsolete and he can figure out the best way to keep dishonest people from stealing and claiming his work as their own.

He has many irons in the fire right now trying to keep up with firmware mods for so many models, so your best bet is to wait until the public site is active again, then reach out to him about it. You can only imagine the volume of messages and emails he gets from people begging for firmware mods. Totally understandable that this would happen considering how bad stock firmware sucks, but trying to keep up with and respond to all of those requests would be a full time job in and of itself, with no time available to work on anything else.
@j95 and I will both have featured content on the new and improved @Prema web site.

A screenshot is needed w/o the address bar. I want to see the revamped site of @Prema for OC'ers enthusiasts and students.

It looks really fantastic, but Brother @Prema would need to share that screen shot. I would not feel comfortable doing that and I would hate to spoil his surprise in any way.
