I know this fourm is for notebooks, but I have to get approval from all of you. I'm trying to start a server that will run under my desk. Hopefully I'll use some Secure Shell for file transfer too. Anywho, here is the old machine.
Amd 2000 XP
512mb ddr2100
Ati 9200xt 128mb agp (Just had it laying around)
40gb hdd
Debian Linux
Does this all sound good? I'm not going to be running the best of games, just Unreal Tournament Game of the Year and Counter-Strike 1.6. My upstream in my dorm room is about 768k. I think that should be enough for about 10-12 people. I plan to buy some more ram when the time comes. Please just tell me if this is ok for a server.... ccbr01

If you're just going to run games like CS 1.6 on it with max 12 people connecting to it simultaneously, then that setting is fine, although a higher upstream speed could help a bit.

If you're running this on a university network, I'd give you 30 days tops before they catch on to it(if they have IT people with any kind of clue...and usually there's a couple network guys who know what they're doing at most major schools...unless you're at some liberal arts school).

I'm at a mainstream university. Would they cut me off if they catch me? I don't know how they would do that.
