Awesome! Maybe game manufacturers will start realizing that DRM (especially intrusive DRM) only hurts legitimate buyers and drives would-be buyers to pirate. Which both result in less sales.

From what I understand you still need internet connection to start the game. Just after startup it will stop checking for a constant internet connection so you won't lose game progress if you are disconnected. I wouldn't know for sure because I've boycotted Ubisoft since then, and they don't make any games I'm interested in playing anyways.

I agree with this. Ubisoft makes it really easy to boycott their games. What do they have? Assassins Creed, the best example of crappy console porting? And a story plot that appeals to only a few. Some derranged story of Templars and Assassins, in medieval Italy?

I am a huge hater of console ports, but I really enjoyed Assassins Creed and never got the feeling of it being a "console port". This is actually the first time I'm hearing it called that.

I will say this. Ubisoft would currently have about $75 from me right now if it wasn't for their DRM. I would have bought Creed II and Settlers 7 had it not been for that. In addition to me being super anti-DRM, my net tends to drop from time and time (everytime the wind blows.. thanks Comcast) and I literally couldn't run intrusive DRM like that.

I haven't played Brotherhood and have no interest. I tried a bit of the 2nd.

    - Has the worst screen tearing I've ever seen in any game, and completely beyond anything I've seen on PC.
    - The jagged edges were atrocious. It's the only game I've ever played where I thought AA was needed on a 1080p screen on a 17" screen
    - It is the worst performing DX9 game I've ever played. And even when I'm getting 45+ FPS, the game feels so sluggish I felt like it was 15 FPS.
    - During the turorial, all the buttons were using the 360 controller symbols when I was using keyboard and mouse.
    - The interface is atrocious and made for consoles.
    - Screen panning and turning was atrocious. The game always wanted to go into a view that I didn't want to. It was obviously done for console controllers and they didn't free it for PC users. It's just bad. The only people who don't complain are those who play PC games with controllers.

Anyways, that's all I can say about Ubisoft. They clearly have no interest in PC and just quickly port something to PC hoping to make some extra cash. It's about it for me.

Even if they got rid of their DRM, I'd need better games to even get me to consider buying.

This is a scam. Just like others are saying, they still require and internet connection to their servers each and every time you start playing, but you no longer have to stream to their servers.

This is only a slight move in the right direction but this DRM is still unacceptable.

Not good enough! I am not calling the mothership everytime I want to start my game to the same degree I will not stay connected to the mothership to play the game. Steam and GFWL have Offline option and that is why they are still on my pc.

Ubisoft, you lost a legit sale of HAWX 2.

Heh, next they will install some malware that scans your PC and then send back all information, hence that initial need for internet connection :p

Didn't know about StarForce, but found a nice article for it: Reclaim Your Game, Consumer-Focused - StarForce
    - DRM installs without consent
    - DRM remains in your registry, doesn't uninstall
    - DRM has hidden files in your system device drivers (icky)

Since this still requires an internet connection I don't see this as news. Until this DRM is gone completely I won't be buying any more of their titles period. I guess they don't want my money and at this rate, they will never get it.

I was planning on buying Assassins Creed 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction for the PC but I will never support such rubbish DRM. This is like buying a PC retail disk and calling up the shop each time I want to play it.

Exactly my feelings. Their restriction on games is still high for those, like AC2, which have no online portions.

UPDATE: Ubisoft DRM decided on a case-by-case basis

Some newer titles that they feel will be at greater risk of piracy will still be shipped with this crap.

I don't care as the only game in their catalogue that interest me is Beyond good and evil .. and i think the 2nd one was canned anyway.

Interesting, so basically paraphrasing Ubisoft: every AAA game will still ship with the DRM... and since this is a big publisher, almost all their games are AAA... there we go, no news at all (removing DRM has been seen before from many companies in regard to their old games).

All that means is that the frame rate of your games never exceeds the refresh rate of your screen. If it does, you will notice tearing.

Im surprised they even care about pc, seriously. Im not saying that pc games can't put out some impressive sales numbers, but they are picky and even just listening to you guys now hate a game because it doesn't hit a standard. Now im not saying you can't have a standard but just because the game lacks some visual options doesn't mean the actual game isn't any good, great example is transformers war for cybertron, great game no visual options, does it really matter no, because the plot and gameplay were good. With that said I know this isn't the case there are sometimes some really bad ports but regardless.

Now consoles combined earnings for ubisoft games is enough the negate ever putting out a copy on pcs at all, so im surprised most of the companies bother messing around with pc at all anymore. There is no benifit to beef up one version over another that will sell better in the end and ultimately won't even be that bad.

Don't get me wrong consoles are holding back games now, but that doesn't stop MGS4, GT5, Uncharted or halo from being great games, could they look better? sure! but really they are good enough as they are. That said I am ready for a new console generation to ramp up quality .

I think its more work than you anticipate, if they changed texture settings it could lead to a world of bugs and models looking rediculous, its alot more effort than make one, unified experience across the board, the best they can, and not spend extra effort for no return. Its a business as much as it is entertainment, and someones making money regardless if they do anything for pc or not.

I didn't buy no Ubisoft games in a while because I pirated them. I didn't buy no Ubisoft games in a while because as a big publisher their mission is to take a good idea and farq it up as much as possible ending up in games I don't like.

My brother picks some of them up from bargain bins, I still don't think a lot of them are worth it. $5 weekly hire from the video store... getting close but still about a fiver too much.

I'm not happy about their insistence on an always-on internet connection, unfortunately they also happen to be the publishers for Heroes VI so that's probably not going onto my purchase list for future games.

Shame I didn't play the series revamp from the start despite its huge similarity with the Heroes series.
