    My question is this:

Will a game purchased in the USA work on a console purchased in the UK? I'm wanting to send a game to a friend in Scotland.

If not, can I just purchase the game on Amazon UK and have them send it to him?

Most likely not. The US uses NTSC while most of Europe uses PAL.

    Depends on the platform.
With PC games, there are no problems.
When different versions of a PC game are released in different areas, it's either due to different censorship rules (some European countries don't like violence, the US can't tolerate ***), or simply because the game is being published by different companies in the two regions.
They'll work on any PC anywhere in the world though.

    With consoles... It depends. :)
Some won't be able to run games from another region, unless you get the console modded.

    Edit:
Well, way to prove my point... The "**" was obviously the 3-letter naughty word that... the US can't tolerate... Starts with an S, ends with an X. ;)
