    Hi. I've got a sager 2090. 2 gigs of RAM, T7300, 8600gt.

I've been playing unreal tournament 2004 and I'm getting some strange performance issues.

My notebook came with Vista installed. I installed XP Pro yesterday to reaplace Vista.

When I was playing UT2k4 under Vista, I had no issues.

Playing under XP, it plays well, but on certain maps (so far only indoor maps) it gets really choppy and difficult to play. I'm using the 163.44 drivers, which I read are excellent for gaming performance. I patched UT2k4, which didn't help anything.

I know this is sort of a vague problem, but has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it...?

what res are you playing at?

are are 100% sure you are plugged in? UTk4 acts strangly when under reduced power.

I'm playing at 1680x1050, but I tried at lower resolutions and it played exactly the same. It's not that the card can't handle it. It's just something buggy about the way the map is or something. It can play some maps fine, but others are choppy. And I can play Half-Life 2 maxed at 1680x1050 fine, and it's more demanding, so ...yeah.

And yes, I'm on AC power.

UT2004 should run fine regardless of the settings used. Is this the only game that you have problems with?

Are you playing online or with bots? Too many Bots would account for the slowdown, especially in indoor areas where they'd be more concentrated.

I usually go into the UT2004.ini and switch the renderer to OpenGL.... it gives best performance. :)

Yes, this is the only game I'm having problems with.

I'm playing offline, just the normal campaign. I had no problems playing online earlier. It really seems dependent on the map I play.

yeah switch to open gl and see if the problem goes away. thats a pretty easy solution if it works. its probably a driver issue.

If you're playing offline, and with a lot of bots, then that's probably the problem. Bots are very CPU intensive you know, Ut2K4 also gets really choppy when I try to run a lot of bots on certain maps on my laptop as well.

    I'll try OpenGL.

And no, it's not the bots. I'm not using "lots of bots"...I'm using a normal amount of bots that the game is intended to be played with in the single player tournament. I mean, I played with this many bots on my older desktop (AMD Athlon 2800+) and I didn't get this problem.

Again, it's map dependent. Most maps don't have a problem, but a few do.

    EDIT:

Gophn, if you could explain how exactly to edit the .ini o use OpenGl, that would be appreciated. =)

OK... lemme help you walk it through.

    1) inside of the UT2004 directory, go to the System folder

    2) open the UT2004.ini

    3) go to the [Engine.Engine] (near the top)

    4) make the RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
(make sure to not have a ";" (Semi-colon) in front of it)

    Make it look like this:

Hmm, it seemed like it helped a little bit, but the problem isn't completely gone. The map I had the most problem on went from being unplayable to playable though, so that's good (only unplayable in the sense that it was very difficult to aim properly). It's probably some weird driver issue. But unless it causes bigger problems I can live with it for now. Thanks for the help.

Strange.... probably a driver or driver config issue then.
