Which version would look graphically better? And would it be a significant difference on either version?
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
no significant difference except the input device used. it should run really well at about 1280x800 / 1280x720 on both
-
i would think that the ps3 would look better
-
Definitely not, go for PC version, full access to mods and you can have it maxed out at 1440x900 running smooth 30 fps. No PS3 game to my knowledge has stable FPS anymore.
-
I think you'd have more fun using a mouse/keyboard than a sixaxis. The game doesn't include quick grenades or a powerful melee like Halo to be enjoyable on a controller. -
Graphically, a PC hands down.
When was the last time you had access to Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, and other graphics options on a console? -
-
And says who? A PS3 cell cpu outpower any cpu right now I believe and its RSX gpu outperforms the 8600gt easily imo -
If the PS3 is so powerful, then how come it only runs CoD4 at 1024x600? (the 360 version is at the same resolution too).
In the end, no matter what Sony and MS say, the 360 and PS3 are inferior to mid to high end gaming computers (laptops and desktops). There's a reason why they can sell them at £300. (Yes, I do realise that both companies take a loss on the hardware, but even then, if the systems were as powerful as both companies say, there's no way they could sell them for £300).
Also, I'm not too into the technical side of things but from what I have read, in reality the PS3's GPU is a modified 7800 card, and its CPU really isn't that well designed for gaming. -
Don't forget that the PS3 version is slowed down.
I'm not referring to frame-rate, I mean the game characters walk/run and turn slower on the the PS3 version.
Epic said it was to enhance "control"---meaning since gamepads stink as control devices (compared to say, KB + mouse on a PC) the game had to be slowed down so that console users could hit something. -

Assuming the topic starter is mentioning the 8600 M GT, then the PS3 version will look better.
The PS3 version of UT3 has:
1) Locked 30FPS (No jittering, unlike what you'll be getting with the 8600M GT)
2) Keyboard and Mouse support.
So unless you want to be able to play it on the go, I'd opt for the PS3 version.
Otherwise I could just as well say, if the XBox 360 is so weak, how come it can run Gears of War at full 720p? It's evident that Infinity Ward has to make some compromises for CoD4 so that it'd run on both consoles identically!
Multi-platform titles are never a good indicator at judging hardware performance or power.
.
But, even ASSUMING you're correct, the 7800 GTX is still more powerful than the 8600M GT... -
-
I would say the PS3 would look better, and you wont be concerned with having to tweak the settings to get the best performance. But if your intention is play UT3 wherever you may be then get it for the PC. I personally bought it for PC instead of my PS3 because I've always played UT3 on my PC and that's just the way I like it.
-
I max it 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF here under Vista.
If I recall The RSX on the PS3 is based on the 7800GTX (256 pixel shaders I believe) . The 360 graphics chip is based on the X1900 I believe but has USP rather than PS.
In some years it should be able to produce things way better than now (FF13 has been confirmed to use 100% of the PS3 ressources so let's wait for it to be released, it's still "uknown" state is because they can't use it all with the current dev technology but the Artistic Director said that his DRAWINGS/PHOTOSHOP shots were not good enough to use all the ressources)
The first Xbox's graphics chip was a modified GF3 but look at what it was able to produce at the end....
Also: The Cell CPU took 4 year of developement and used a $400,000,000 budget, shared by Sony, IBM and Toshiba. -
Go for the PS3. With the PS3 you don't have to worry about the game crashing, or not running properly. As said before, I believe you can use a mouse+keyboard with it.
-
-
And I was referring to the decision to slow ALL aspects of the characters down on the PS3 version. -
I believe it is true that the PS3 version of the game is slowed down by 20% by default... But I think there's an option to speed it back up (I'm not 100% sure on this, but remember the original Unreal Tournament port for the PS2? It had an option to speed things up or slow things down). -
-
In reality, you're not going to notice a huge graphical difference between the two. If you like a game just to work, then get the PS3 version. If you like tweaking settings and messing with mods and such, or if you like to play it on the go, get the PC version.

Get both, try them... keep the one you like and send me the one you don't..

G80 class GPUs includes hardware to make things efficient e.g. Giga-Threads, early-Z test, fully decoupled pixel and texture operations(1) and 'etc'.
In http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=23884
The speculated G80 didn't resemble the real G80.
Running UT3-beta, GeForce 8600GT GDDR3 is roughly similar to GeForce 7950GT.
PS3's RSX is hardly a Geforce 7800GTX i.e. RSX only has 8ROPS vs Geforce 7800GTS/7900GS's 16ROPS. Unlike Geforce 8 family, Geforce 7 family is missing Early-Z hardware and it can't execute pixel shader operations and texture operations concurrently(1).
Also factor in Geforce 8600M GT GDDR2 vs Geforce 8600M GT GDDR3. -
X360's Xenos GPU is not based on R580(X1900).
Xenos has
1. 64 Threads.
2. Unified shaders(only for vertex and pixel).
R580 has
1. 512 Ultra-Threads (pixel threads),
2. Separate vertex and pixel shaders. -

id prefer the pc for the sake that UT2004 to this day stays alive mostly due to the extra mods/maps ect, I imagine UT3 will do the same.
Plus I already have a mouse/keyboard on my pc, I wouldn't play it on PS3 without the same (and obviously the cost of the PS3 if you don't own one is huge) If your on the wall about it, why dont you go rent it for the PS3 and download the PC demo? -
If there is ever a chance to buy for the pc vs console...always go for pc...that means espically for FPS...why...with a console you have a controller....for the pc you have keyboard and mouse. I don't care what anyone says...if you take someone who has a game like UT3 on ps3/xbox vs someone on a pc with a mouse and keyboard...the pc will win....better reaction time with the keyboard and mouse...plus on the pc, you have more mods that are available from users that make the game playable longer...plus the pc games are usually cheaper.

This is simply the never ending argument. It all comes down to personal preference. The cell processor the PS3 sure can whip the **** out of a PC CPU on paper but the cell processor can't execute x86 instructions that our desktop cpus can do. Just for the vice versa...
-

I would Hardly call the Xbox 360 weak compared to the PS3.
The Cell chip, as said before, is a good idea on paper... But in reality it just isn't practical.
Such as in Assassins creed, where developers confirmed that the AI would be better for 360 just because the PS3 is too hard to build games for.
And I also believe Rockstar said GTA4 is done for the 360, but is a hassle to complete on the sony platform.
The 3 core for the 360 is more practical and easier to build for with the speed needed, making it in reality: The better processor design. -
Due to unified shaders design and Early-Z hardware, a PC with mid-ranged G8x GPU avoids the G7x based issues.
Refer to http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_37100.html
in Geforce 8 vs Geforce 7. Note the the following
1. G8x's decoupled texture and shader math operations. G7x’s potential can be reduce to half. (Page 39) Refer to G8x's GigaThread feature.

G7x

_______(texture)_______(texture op)______
SPU resource can be use to mitigate this issue, but this reduces the available SPU resource.
G8x

Geforce 7950GT’s reduced performance in UT3 shows a design issue with G7x's shader units vs G8x's shader units.
2. DX10 GPU takes over the CPU in the areas of (Page 52)
- Physical simulation on control points
- Interpolate and tessellate control points
- Save tessellated (hairs) to memory -
plus you can use a mouse and keyboard, even tho its slowed down its still really fast paced gameplay -
-
PS3 can do MODS but you have to have the PC version to create them. Still cool IMO.
-
The PS3 will undoubtedly out perform an 8600gt mobile in straight horsepower. Theres also the fact that theres no need to scale graphics on the console so they get heavily optimised for that level of graphics.
That said, ut3 is stunningly fast on both systems, and will probably run fine on a 8600gt mobile. It also does have the mod benefit. Both systems use keyboard and mouse, but of course ut3 on your laptop will actually be portable. It will also be there for your next pc and run even better. -

Just don't dig up old threads.
And for heaven's sake, someone please don't post after what I just made...Unless a mod closes it, making an exception. -
What is with half of you guys.
Comparing PC 2 Consoles..........
High end PCs now kick the arse out of Consoles.. And them silly controlers With FPSers thats crasyness
PC all the way !!!!!!!!!! -

Oh great another FAQin Console versus PC thread full of people who don't know anything about the PS3 ut think it's Manna from heaven.
Play on whichever one you like, they'll both suck, since it's UT3, and a terrible update from the awesome UT2K4. -
see I hate arguments like these because the truth is if you have any PS3 game vs it's PC counterpart, the PC version always wins; just bump the resolution past what the PS3 outputs. Simple as that. There will always be hardware able to run said PC game better than the PS3 (though it's expensive to do that). The only PC game I have see that looks worse than on the Console is seed for speed most wanted (it was missing normal mapping on the roads).
UT3 on PS3 vs. PC with 8600GT.
