Haha! I really hate the need a cd/dvd thing its so dumb it only hurts the legit people because the people that pirate the stuff always find a work around.

I just infact downloaded alchohol 120% the other day to see if I can make a mini-image for COD4 because I cant play 1 player without the disk. If it doesn't work, I'll go right to (insert favorite pirate site) and get a fixed exe to get around it but was trying the legit way first :p

as far as im concerned, using a no-cd exe for a game that you already own is legal and useful.

And that is what rational people would say too. However, that's not what the Digital Millenium Copyright Act says. Whether or not you have legal right to use and access the content protected through a technical means, the act of circumventing the protection techology is illegal. Gotta love lobbyists.

That's like saying it's illegal to turn off your own home security system...

Yup, pretty much... but that's what the law says. From Wikipedia:
"The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law which implements two 1996 WIPO treaties. It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services that are used to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works (commonly known as DRM) and criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself."

It's like saying if you go to Home Depot and buy a lock box, it is against the law for you to break the lock, even though you own the box and the contents. It makes me mad to just think about.

Yeah... too bad that the DMCA was enacted in order to implement an international treaty established within a UN body. Look up the WIPO. Chances are your country has an analogous law that conforms to the treaty. For instance, those of you in the EU might be interested in looking up Directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament.

Well, it isn't "legal" but you are protected with the current law. It's your private life, they cannot do anything. Downloading for personal use is okay, you cannot distribute though.

Gotta love Ubisoft's unapologetic, sweep under the rug arrogance of, first, being caught transmitting "illegal" software, and second for not issuing a public apologize for the gaffe.

    haha hilarious.

Its true though , even games that I bought LEGIT, I sometimes get tired of having to puti n the DVD. So eventhough I bought the game , I still turn to pirates to get a no-CD crack... which is odd.... since that is about as much trouble as finding a completely working version of the game.....

Luckily developers are beginning to understand that we dont wanna have to take our DvD's out (bring them with us, etc) to play a game thats installed on our PCs. Company of heroes, for example doesnt require it. Its also a big advantage to buying games online (like off steam) , where you can just select your game and play without hassle.
