I guess I'm thoroughly confused about mobile GPU ranking now. I'm looking to get a 14 or 15 inch laptop that can play Crysis (or any other uber-intensive game) at the best possible setting. Or is there a new game that sets the resource use standard?

Is there an ASUS that can accomplish that?
    Is nVidia or ATI better?
Any laptops to wait for? I'm not in a rush to buy one, but one by the summer.

I already saw that list. Any plans on the list being more updated?

But it is missing quite a few GPUs that I have seen mentioned like the GT335M or 240M, 5730, etc. And also some are clocked at one speed on one system then another?

That's why the confusion. I wish all GPUs were just tested with one game at low, mid, high settings. It would create some standard comparision. I wish I had the time and money. :(

need to make up your mind because there is a huge difference in the gpu's that get put into these two sizes of laptops.

Your best bet is to go with a 15 inch laptop that has a GTX 285M, an HD5870 or go with a 17 inch with SLI.

With a single GPU you won't be able to max Crysis out but you will be able to play on a mixture of high and medium. Going with a res of 1600x900 will give better results.

Worth waiting for Expresscard 2.0 or x2 1.0 capable notebook so can host a desktop video card via expresscard slot. See DIY ViDock thread. 17" G73JH's mobility HD5870 is otherwise the most powerful single gpu atm.

I think crysis should be played on at least a 17in. Im not sure but I think the best gpu out for a 15in would be a 285m gtx. Correct me if im wrong

The best mobile GPU out right now is the 5870m, however GTX285 is available in 15" chassis so thats probably the one to go for.

There MAY be 5870m 15" chassis out later on dependant on heat output etc (although to be fair it does look good on this side from people's results with the G73), and Nvidia will have new cards in about 2-6 months, but until they're officially confirmed, and release dates given we dont know when they'll arrive.

Thanks to all for your help.

I guess 15 inch would be the sweet spot for balance of power and ease of transport. I tried to use a friend's 17 inch laptop for a while, and the nearly 10 pound brick became cumbersome. Never thought 4 more pounds would make that big a difference.

I don't expect to play Crysis or equivalent games maxed out in a 14/15 inch chassis. A mix of high and med details sounds good. I wonder if there are any plans for switchable graphics between a power card such as GTX 285M and IGP. I saw that ASUS nVidia are releasing instant switch machines, but don't know if those GPUs are any good for better than decent gaming such as GT 335M. Then there is talk of the ATI one with Lenovo ideapad.

You should consider getting Crysis 2, Warhead, wars too. Depending on your budget you should get the best notebook you can find.

Your better off getting a laptop with a 5870 which supports DirectX 11.0 even if the laptop is bigger... i don't know why NVDIA needs to be stuck in the 10.1 era when 11 is here... the GTX285M just looks like another rebagged dinosaur GPU unlike the 5870 which is something new and better...
